Leigh Halfpenny?
27 March, 2017 23:00
Might have missed this already been talked about but don't think so? Just seen this tweet in the 'tomorrows headlines' area. Ostensibly the tweet is about T20 cricket on the BBC but a rather interesting little snippet to the side that Leith 1/2p has been spotted at Farleigh...

Not for me, Tom homer is a cheaper version and has been one of our standouts. IMO I'd rather save the money for a tight head and a better back up 9... No offence to Chris cook, but I just don't trust him in big games.

Think the best of Halfpenny's rugby has already been played and that he's morphing into something of a Neil Jenkins player: not much more than a decent boot.

I echo the thoughts of those who have already commented. It's a nice idea but he would be an expensive signing for limited availability a la Ford. Agree we need to prioritise SH and TH as well as squad players of a high quality and fitness.

It's Fissler so won't have any factual accuracy.

Would be a classic BC signing though, overpriced international who will actually play few games for Bath and use up valuable cap that would be better used in other positions.

I'm also not keen it looks like an exercise in name gathering rather than a well thought out plan to address squad needs or depth. Likewise I think his recent performances have been decidedly lacklustre we could do cheaper and definitely have better. There is the chance that this is another effort to force the hand of the WRU into a longer central contract but given their finances and his recent form this is may not succeed. it would be a shame to end up with him just because the WRU didn't offer a long enough deal. There are other more pressing needs and the space in the cap probably doesn't run to all of them.

It seems a bit churlish to not be excited about that prospect when we have been reduced to some very unlikely backs in our match-day squads this season. But 3 and 9 are the money spots for recruitment. Throw some cash at Care please.

As others have said his best days are, I believe, behind him. We have Watson and Homer as excellent full backs, and we have a decent crop of wingers.
Unless 1/2d can play as the 3rd fly half (and to my knowledge he's only played wing or full back) I don't see what he would add when money needs to be spent elsewhere.

Would be a typical Bruce signing though.

How long was it that Sarries went on making vanity signings for before they realized the need to build a squad that would give everything for each other?....................

Not keen for reasons others have posted above and would rather we developed some young English talent e.g. Freddie Burns for EQP payments from the RFU to save BC a bit of cash than SH and Welsh players towards the end of their careers. To paraphrase a famous Monty Python scene from the Life of Brian - What has Luke Charteris done for us?

Chron says that it is after the end of next season.

Now Halfpenny is understood to have committed to play for Toulon next season - his fourth - after which time he would become a free agent.

So he would effectively join after the World Cup in Japan? Seems every distant and speculative to me tbh.

Negotiations with the WRU reportedly broke down not due to money, but because the union was not willing to extend their proposed two-year contract by four more months to cover the World Cup in Japan at the start of the 2019 season, before Halfpenny would potentially try his hand at Super Rugby.

I do not want this to happen one bit....

The reliability with the boot we would add would not make up for the distinct lack of counter attacking form or just general form he has been in for the last year or two.

I would much rather keep Tom Homer/Watson as our fullback options and help someone like Darren Atkins develop than throw big money at Halfpenny.

Not a worthwhile signing and it is certainly not an area I want to see us strengthen given the talent we already have there and the fact he would not help strengthen the squad during those 6N and Autumn months!

Re: Leigh Halfpenny?

For goodness sake Bath, every man and his dog can see where our weaknesses are and the fundamental needs of the side, ie our powder puff pack. Without the ball in true rugby cliche, it doesn't matter how good your backs are, we are not going to win much and will never be able to regularly compete against bigger, stronger heavyweight packs like Saracens, Leicester and Exeter. Many have alluded to Francois lone battle against Sarries, which has been acknowledged by their supporters, we desperately need gnarled older tough hombres at tight head and either in the second or back row. If Garvey recovers full fitness, he can cover the back row, but still a top class second row would be good, and I don't mean Charteris who again failed miserably to live up to his exalted status again last Sunday.

Bruce I have always said and believe he is a true rugby man, and he must see we don't need an ageing goal kicking full back when we have two excellent prospects in Homer and watson. OK Halfpenny's kicking is tip top, but IIRR Homer's is around 80 % this season, and OK Watson does not goal kick. But we will have Freddie and Priestland who can do this very important task already, and it is the basics we need, like ball winning forwards who can go forward.

I can remember not so long ago, Bath always had second rows like Redman and Grewcock who were often seen carrying the ball forward, like Itoje and Launchbury. Who can remember any of our present bunch do so apart from the occasional dash by Atters?

Leigh 5 years ago would have been a great signing but not now, and certainly not in 12 months time. Tight heads please Bath. You know it makes sense.

I'm thinking this is a rumour that has got out of control, perhaps I just hope so. We seem to some half decent recruitment followed by some name grabbing crazy ones the undo all the good work we've put into developing a squad. This has been going on too long to be attributable to any one coach.

It's not just the fact we're going for stars, I don't think that is where value for money lies but that's another thing, I could understand it and in cases get excited by it, but we seem to grab for stars that we don't really need and don't really fit into any sort game that we want to play.

More often than not these players don't seem to perform for us anyway.

I have a feeling there may be some substance to this rumour.

A friend of mine who has a contact at the club told me a couple of weeks ago that Halfpenny to Bath was as good as done, although didn't specify when the move would take place. I was sceptical as usually someone better connected like Malco has posted something or indeed Fissler / a tabloid might have printed an article but there was nothing at that stage.

Like others have said, while his World Class place kicking would be a welcome addition, I'd much rather see the money spent on a THP and or SH. Like BathMatt, I wouldn't say no to Etzebeth either.

This seems so very true. It started with Lucas Moody, then Priestland, Charteris & now Halfpenny - maybe not Faletau but we'll see. They have either been almost permanently crocked, committed internationaly or just seeking a sinicure pre-retirement. I'd much rather have a couple more Banahans or Garveys on our books. We so need at least a couple of props, a scrum half & even another 2nd row like Atwood.

This forum makes me laugh sometimes!

A week after our worst loss for 15 years we get linked with one of Europe's premier players. Vastly experienced - 70+ caps, a BI Lion and still only 28, So in his prime!

He might well be expensive (we have yet to see) and he might not be Ben Smith or Israel Folau, but someone of his proven goalkicking calibre will be worth every penny! Especially as there are question marks in that area with Priestland and Burns.

Goal kicking to his standards might prove the difference to turn those narrow losses into narrow wins. It would certainly make the opposition think twice at competing so ferociously at our breakdowns for fear of giving penalties away.

Yes we do need stronger ball carriers in the pack and maybe a 12 to get us over the gain line more regularly.

But as this looks to be a signing for 2 season's time, maybe the club are also looking at that.

I hope it happens. It can only be good for us.

This season has been a major improvement and the pushover try against saints along with a 90% stat, surly Max can keep the shirt for a while yet?

Good point about those props, Catt in particular

If a player is injury prone, that's a massive negative for them. I would like to understand the science behind this i.e. are certain players generally injury prone, is it that they are just doing things which make them likely to get injured, or is it a recurrent injury.

Ben Williams clearly seemed to fall into the first category

He's telling them to sort it out before the Lions leave for New Zealand.

Could well be if Toulon stall any longer we wouldn't have to buy him out of a contract to get him here next season.

Is Halfpenny not better off being more of a Wasps signing to replace Beale? Halfpenny moves in the fullback slot that Beale has left? He was linked with Wasps prior to his move to Toulon too wasn't he?

I personally would rather have a top class centre or tighthead brought in ahead of Halfpenny unless signed on a low money contract - which I doubt he would do. Think we have ample back three players with the following all signed up;

Wilson - 11/14/13
Banahan - 11/12
Watson - 11/15
Rokoduguni - 14
Brew- 11/14
Tom Homer - 15/11

I'd take halfpenny in a heart beat, hes rock solid at the back and even with his dip in form there is a reason hes picked for Wales every time hes available.

If Watson is on England duty (and incidently playing wing for them) and Homer gets injured, who have we got to play 15?

Why on earth would we be looking at Halfpenny if there is the remotest sniff of re-signing Abendanon?

Freddie Burns has played fullback quite a bit for both Gloucester and Leicester. There's also Davies and Atkins in the Academy who both play FB/wing.

I can't see why we would spend a lot of money on Halfpenny when there is a greater need for a quality TH and centre.

Well it wouldn't be Halfpenny as he would be playing for Wales if not injured.

I'm not necessarily advocating Mr Halfpenny. I'm just suggesting that fullback is not one of our strong postions. If watson is on England Duty (which is a high probability), and Homer is injured, gets ill, needs a rest do we really want to rely on Academy players who have little experience of PL rugby. They might well shine but it is quite risky in my view. If they are to be used we need to give them some PL play time in the first part of the season (as well as but not only United experience)

Rhys Priestland or Freddie Burns can cover full back, while the other is at fly half, if we are short of Watson and Homer.

Not sure I agree, LH gets picked for Wales because Wales are too conservative. They have some excellent wingers they are too scared to try, Steff Evans at Scarlets being one. Liam Williams would be their best bet at 15.

You right though, LH is safe, too safe for us, he offers little other than safety, Watson, Homer are great options, getting Bendy would be far more suitable for Bath,

Surely if your concern is cover then LH is going to prove expensive?

I agree and as I said before I'm not advocating LH - I am just putting a marker up that we could be seen to be light at Full Back. Do we want to have Academy Players or other players like FB and RP 'filling in' as first back up during International Periods or should we be looking for an experienced Full Back to provide cover?

How many options there do you want?

I would like an experienced backup for the International window. If Homer goes down with a long term injury we could have 10 weeks plus without an experienced fullback and even if fit Homer might be withdrawn with HIA protocols etc. Atkins etc might show promise but are they ready for full on Premiership games, 80 mins every week. If others think yes - fine. . I just feel we are a little exposed at that position.

Hemington aren't you missing the point made above that LH will be away during the International windows? Or do we think that he would be out of the Wales picture if he joined us (think he was excluded before as he signed before the rule). Guess it would depend if he was offered a central contract this time around - if not he is free to play for them even outside Wales?

He is reportedly on £400k+ so I would prefer another utility back to cover positions including 15 tbh (Israel Folau, Israel Dagg or Jack Nowell would be acceptable!).

Sorry BathMatt53 but I've already said,

'I'm not necessarily advocating Mr Halfpenny'

and

'I agree and as I said before I'm not advocating LH'

so missing the point really doesn't come into it. I agree he might well be playing for Wales and would be a very expensive third choice Full Back. The question I am trying to ask is do we need a better 3rd choice (second choice in International windows) Full Back or will the Academy boys and part time full backs be sufficient when the going gets tough?

Folau's form is even worse than that of Halfpenny's. Israel Dagg signed a central contract to stay in NZ until 2019 and I don't see Jack Nowell going anywhere.

Those were tongue in cheek.

(I guess that Burns would have to be the experienced FB Hemington).

Halfpenny wouldn't be available for much of the season so no point.

We have players who can cover fullback too I think with Roko playing there during the Army-Navy game and Wilson probably able too. We could cover it without bringing in Halfpenny on 400k a year!!!

Crikey, BBC reporting that he will sign on for longer at Toulon on eye watering money:

'Toulon have made an offer reported to be worth £750,000 per year for the club's top points-scorer.

Halfpenny again proved his worth as Toulon reached the French Top 14 semi-finals, scoring a crucial late try in a personal haul of 21 points as they saw off Castres 26-22 last Friday.'

He has been offered a central contract too, meaning that he would fall under the 'outside wales' Gatland quota presumably.

You need a top class kicker at club level. RP does not seem to have the cleanest of strikes and that might let him down under pressure. What is Burns like?

Burns' kicking has been superb this season. 80% plus conversion rate.

I still think that if we are in the market for a full back, we should look no further than Nick Abendanon.

Struggling to see why Halfpenny would leave the lifestyle, money and trophy winning potential of Toulon for Bath.

Not the same thing a 1.5 hour commute and not uprooting your family ( he didn't even have a permanent contract when he first came) versus a lucrative relocation to France with contract.

Hes been criticised heavily during the last six nations, perhaps he thinks he needs to leave Toulon in order to rejuvenate his career.

A lucrative relocation doesn't mean he's not pining for the valleys. OK its hard to believe but it would be a reason! Sounds like he's signing imminently anyway.
