Best foriegn players to play for Bath
02 May, 2017 13:21
The Guardian have had a stab at producing a list of the 5 best foreign players in the Premiership here:

Got me thinking - who are the 5 best foreigners to play for Bath?
Conditions - only 1 nomination per position

Off the top of my head, I've gone for:
Francois Louw - 7
Butch James - 10
Dan Lyle - 8 (unlucky Zac Feunati, fan favourite, but Lyle the better player)
Andy Nicol - 9 (unlucky Michael Claasens, but A.N. DID lift the Heineken cup as captain - Fotuali'i could have got this if we'd signed him straight from the Ospreys)
Jonathon Humphries - 2 (some serious competition when we get down to 4th/5th choice; but Humphries probably had the biggest effect on the club)

Horatio Agulla - 15
Joe Maddock - 14
Frikkie Welsh -13
Shaun Berne - 12
Brendan Daniel - 11
Butch James - 10
Jon Preston - 9
Taulupe Faletau - 8
François Louw - 7
Luke Watson - 6
Justin Harrison - 5
Warrick Waugh - 4
Anthony Perense - 3
Jonathan Humpfries - 2
Filisse - 1

That's my stab for a team of foreigners.

Jo Mad Dog Maddock would have to be there somewhere for me. Our scrum looked pretty solid with Paul James there.

(p.s. Do you mean 'best for Bath' or best full stop who have played for Bath? Peter Stringer was a better 9 than Nicol IMO but obviously not here long).

I mean best for Bath; otherwise Fotuali'i would be or SH, and Bory probably on the wing etc etc.
But people can select it as they see fit.

I had Maddock very much in contention for that 5th place; I just felt that our situation before and after Humphries' arrival warranted him getting that 5th slot; I also had Simon Geoghan in the mix

I think that it is my interpretation of the question tbh - 98 cap Stringer in his prime was better then Claasens in his prime for me. So in terms of the best people to play for Bath I have taken it as that (rather than the people who have played best for Bath). Don't worry, I'm lost too.

Ieuan Evans, Simon Geoghegan, Julian Salvi all worth honourable mentions at least.

David Sole streets ahead of Filisse at prop IMHO.

Would Lipman count, I know he got a couple of England caps but pretty sure he's Australian? Great player, shame he was embroiled in the Peruvian disco dust saga.

My opinion is that Butch, Louw and Dan Lyle in a class of their own.

Other favourites include Matt Carraro, Maddock and Zak.

I haven't classed British isle players as foreign. There would be too many to name.

Probably not but worth a mention is dispatches!

Absolutely adored Watson, gutted he left even though it was for a noble cause. Another player who wasn't here long enough was Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu, absolutely electric on his day.

What about Elvis and that try which kept us in the Premiership?

Certainly along with Dan Lyle Simon Geogheghan was one of the very best 'foreigners' ever to wear the B,B & W. Every time he got the ball, you felt the atmosphere started tingling in expectation and he rarely disappointed. Great player and great bloke off the field.

I'll always remember the hitch kick try Anthony Perenise scored for us a few years back...

Jonny Fa'amatuainu was great for us as well. A number of our most recent foreign fan favourites have held down back row positions I have noticed with the following my favourites...
Zak Feaunati
Jonny Fa'amatuainu
Luke Watson
Leroy Houston
Francois Louw

Special mention btw on this thread to Stephen Donald... The Beaver is playing at the Chiefs in NZ and actually playing pretty well in a backline that include Aaron Cruden, Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Anton Lienert-Brown, Damian McKenzie and James Lowe!!

You mean the end-to-end one versus Bizzle at the Rec?

If so, as i recall it:

- Lee Mears receiving a pass under pressure in or near the Bath in-goal area and juggling the ball (eek!)
- Shipped left
- Taufa'ao Filise with a burst down the left wing
- Andy Beattie trucks the ball up, tackled
- Olly Barkley kicks cross-field near half way line
- Joe Maddock catches kick one-handed, cool as you like, takes it up the right wing, fixes defender, passes inside to Salesi Finau
- Finau draws the last man, passes inside, takes tackle
- Zak Fe'aunati canters in under the posts

That is from memory, so possibly wrong.

I am out of breath just typing it.
