OT Fun: If Bath Rugby Rebranded...
25 July, 2017 14:54
As it is the off season we have one of two options - go in repetitive circles about transfer speculation (I've driven myself mad with this let alone the rest of you sorry) or find silly ways to entertain ourselves.

One thing I thought may be fun (and forgive me if it has been done before) is considering what a rebranding of Bath Rugby could look like. By this I mean in the following way other teams are named after animals, colours or dynamic sounding things what could a rebranded Bath rugby incorporate into the title.

Bath Blues is an obvious one but overdone with Cardiff and Auckland both using this. The colour scheme is not strictly only blue of course so doesn't quite fit fully (other than the mood of some of our posters after matches (Sm100) )

The club have recently tried to play on the whole Roman heritage of the city with the introduction of Maximus the mascot etc. Therefore the Bath Rugby Romans is a possibility (not one I would be a fan of I must say!) and would open up the possibility for calling the fans the Batallions etc if they were to go all out!

My personal preference would be something a little more exciting too and so have put some random ideas below;

BR Blizzards
BR Bulldozers
BR Bears
BR Bandicoots
BR Basilisks
BR Bobcats

Those are just a few B beginning ones! Any fun suggestions?

BR Bobcats.

There's as much chance of finding a Bobcat in Bath as there is finding a Shark in Sale!

Bath Gladiators
Bath Centurions

To go with the Roman city theme and a new Colosseum stadium!

Maximus would have a suitable home.
We could sell merchandise / tat for fans to wear to games.

And all games would have the players running out to the theme tune from Gladiator or Game of Thrones.

Bruce Craig could sit in a chair giving the occasional thumbs up and his wife could signal the start of the game by dropping her hanky!

I have always wanted Gloucester to rebrand - as "Old Spots".

I like your ideas on the Roman theme BS - the Roman idea is easy to get behind if not something of a cliche too.

With the Romans idea you can then play on this;
- The team can be called the Bath Rugby Romans
- Maximus the gladiator suddenly makes sense as noted
- The fans group can be called the Bath Battalion or something
- Gladiator music as they enter the pitch is a great shout BS
- Bruce Craig can put his thumb up or down at the end of the match depending on whether we win or lose (Sm100)
- The Rec can be renamed the Amphitheatre
- Post match conferences can start using applicable cliches e.g. when we put out a young team in the Anglo-Welsh and lose we can expect such lines from Todd Blackadder as 'Rome wasn't build in a day'..
- New players can learn Latin when they join the club - in the same way English players must learn French when they join a top 14 team.
- Post match recovery can take place in the Roman Baths as opposed to ice baths

Only real problem is that Russell Crowe has invested all his money into South Sydney Rabbitohs in the NRL and not us!!

Like it BD, but suggest "Legion" in place of Battalion.

I have been known to refer to Glaws as the Tractors, but Old Spots is very good!

There was a discussion on TMS about the names for the county cricket one-day sides when they first started using them - they reckoned Yorkshire should be the Puddings and Lancashire the Hot-Pots.

Plenty of Foxes in Bath; the ladies team could be the Vixens, and the academy the Cubs

There have been a few discussions on COML about how pc it is for the Exeter Chiefs to use that name so I hope anything Bath might come up with is acceptable to everyone.

Somebody will probably find a historical reason to dislike the use of Romans (what have the Romans ever done for us etc.).

Watching the T20 cricket on TV last night it occurred to me how some might find the use of Spitfires for the Kent team to be a bit risky in this modern age.

'Downed all over Kent - just like the 'Luftwaffe' and got away with it!

I keep coming back to the legend of Bladud and how that could be applied.

Bath Lepers, anyone?

Or maybe something to do with the pigs rolling around in mud which are supposed to have inspired him to discover the healing properties of the warm springs and found the city.

Even if we rebranded and bought in 15 all blacks we still wouldn't win anything, and would be relegated every year for at least 5 years; so I don't know why we'd bother.
We'd be better off rebranding as Exeter's feeder club, or maybe a junior franchise; maybe their... 3rd XV (let's not get ahead of ourselves thinking were worthy of being their 2nds)

I'm not a doom monger either, just a realist speaking the truth.

I can't wait to actually have the chance to play for Bath when they are relegated to South West One East - same league as Chippenham and Wooton Bassett amongst others!

Or Bath Mats

Bath Plugs
Bath Rooms

Since some on here think we are going to be trodden down, wiped off, go down the drain or are just c**p

Or perhaps Bath Taps if we turn it on or Bath Soaps if we get a bit slippery.

Love the Roman theme, playing to the heritage of the city.
I would plump for:

Bath Rugby Praetorians (traditionally had a blue plume in the helmet, according to my Rome:Total War game anyhow)

I would love us to chant Ro-mans in the stands to get behind the team as chants rely on two syllables for effectiveness. We'd have some natural outfits for away day travel.
I would rechristen any new ground the 'Reccus Maximus'.
We could even release some Lions if opposition backs broke through Rhys Priestland's defensive work. Some hydrocausting under the seats in the east stand wouldn't go a miss as well.
Surprised the club haven't marketed all this more aggressively in the past! Stash heaven for the club shop.
