Father & Son combinations
09 August, 2017 16:02
[www.bbc.co.uk]

On the one hand the Ford situation was a curates egg, the Dai and Thomas Young relationship seems to work fine (certainly at the moment) and the Farrells haven't done too badly.

I can't work out in my head whether it is a good thing or not working with family?

Rugby is becoming as nepotistic as BBC presenters.

Most seem to handle it OK, remembering that we have Malinder as well. Seems Ford was the odd one out!

This thread doesn't seem right without someone mentioning the great father and son combination that played for us.... in The Moz Memorial Match. The mighty Glen and Rich Leat!

There are wildly varying opinions on Cheeky and Luke Watson's partnership as manager and player, the latter suffering hugely from accusations of nepotism despite his being a very good player indeed.

Alec Stewart had to prove himself with many saying he was promoted too soon. Ferguson's son moved on and had some problems with the press. Modern rugby is more short term now, so it can be tough.

I can't find a direct reference but did Dereck Quinnel play with his son Scott?

Good article highlighting Father and Son combinations here.

See PDG's son Tom has just been selected by England U18s. And Michael Lynagh's son played for the U16s

Going by memory here, but Owen replaced Andy Farrell for Sarries once (LV=?); or possibly came on after Andy had gone off - so they played in the same match, but didn't make the pitch together.
Also going by memory, Regan King was due to play alongside his boy in the Pro12; but one of them withdrew injured beforehand.

Not Premiership, but former England Captain (& coach) Dick Greenwood played at No8 for Preston Grasshoppers aged 40 or so, with son Will (16) at centre. Dick came close to being sent off when he reacted to his son being fouled and had to be calmed down by Will.

Just been reminded by the commentator that Danielle the daughter of Jim Waterman our former captain is playing for England today for cap no 73.

Did really well- one of several IMHO who vied with Marlie Parker for the Player of the Match award.

I don't think that Paul Tupai, who played a couple seasons at Northampton 2006-08, has played with his son yet - but he's still playing at Bedford at 42 (he started in 1995!) and his son is 17-18 so it's not impossible.

There's also been a father/son-in-law link - Geech has employed Charlie Beech at more than one club.
