I canít imagine him being any better than Stooke who he may well replace.

Stooke's a year younger as well.

I can't see it being another second row if we've already signed Spencer, must be a centre or wing.
Our pack is already one of the strongest in the premiership, just that we've missed 2-3 first choice players in our tight 5 for over a year.

Malco didnít say it was Spencer but had speculated that it could be. Assume it would be based on Atwood and Stooke long term plans.

It was mentioned above that it is a forward.

No but he did say we were signing an English lock and Wilshd said it was a marquee signing. You can't make a new signing a marquee player if they are already in the premiership and I can't think of any English locks playing outside the premiership, let alone one with a ton of caps.

I had assumed that they were different targets.

'a journalist recently told me that we are chasing after an EQP lock who is well known and highly regarded in the club.'

I assume that it depends on Attwood and Stooke in particular.

It will all become clear fairly soon I'm sure...

I really donít think Stooke is going anywhere. I think itís more likely that Charteris would move on than Stooke. Attwoodís injury is a major worry though.

Paul Eddison - English journo living in France - has tweeted to say that we could be about to have 2 Frenchmen arrive. Colomiers prop Victor Delmas and Toulouse forwards coach Pierre-Henry Broncan.

Don't know much about either to be honest! Think it's been taken from Midi, so read into that what you like!

Also, Quade Cooper being told by Reds that he is surplus to requirements... Would be a great fit at 12 if Tapuai was to move on!

I think this says far more about your expectations than it does the performance of the Bath Rugby team.

Yes Quade is wonderful for the YouTube highlights, but not what Bath need right now. Especially with Clark injured we need a big ol' lump of a 12 imo.

This is a true statement. Clearly people have different expectations.

From my perspective saying that losing quite badly to Exeter away (LBP accepted) is OK because they are the current champions is a bit defeatist. When Bruce bought Bath, Exeter were still in the Championship.

Found some speculation from August 2017, essentially saying Pierre-Henry Broncan's contract is coming to an end with Toulouse and that he has a close relationship with Bruce Craig.

(using google translate, I don't speak French unfortunately)

By the way he is the defence coach, not forwards, so does this mean Todd will focus on attack?

What i was hoping for, employing a former AB and a guy, who although he hadn't won anything at the Crusdaers (with the likes on Carter, McCaw, Reid, Thorn, Franks (both), Crockett, Dagg, Whitelock (x3), Slade, SBW, Romano, Crotty, Todd, Moody, Taylor (Codie)) they did come close twice. I was hoping for an evolution of an effective style.
Now, i don't know enough about rugby to know why that hasn't happened but what i do know is, i haven't read a coherent explanation of that here either.

Sadly you do not just bring in a new coach and start playing really well immediately.. The two most successful clubs in the Premiership at the moment, Exeter and Sarries, have both had their coaching teams in place for long periods of time. McCall has been DoR at Sarries since the 2010/11 season and Baxter at Exeter since 2009.

I think it would be fair to say as well that both of those teams did not have flowing, fancy nor beautiful rugby to begin with either. Sarries particularly played an extremely ugly brand of rugby for a number of years which relied incredibly upon their aggressive defence and a certain England 10 who could kick a few goals consistently.

We are a few years off of that imo but what has been improved this season, bar a couple of games, is that our defence has been excellent and has won us a few games. The attack is a work in progress but given the way the season goes you are never going to get perfect flowing rugby all the time as your first choice players are not always available due to injury/international periods!

Eddie made a few missteps but was fortunate enough that England won anyway, so he could hide them in the background. A lot of them are to do with the midfield. Same problem we've got with TB in attack - our midfield is totally inconsistent.

Re: Transfer rumours

When discussing a players value to a team it is worth remembering that an individuals contribution cannot always be measured by stats and the various metrics of modern analysis; if that were all there was to it then it would no longer be "sport" and everything would become predictable. There are some whose influence on a team transcends form and other variables and whose presence on the team sheet inspires confidence and delight because they are totemic for the team and bring something undefinable extra often resulting in some match turning effect whether obvious to the spectator or not. Some that spring quickly to mind even though they might sometimes have had shockers include Matt Perry, Dan Lyle. Grewcock and Mile Catt even though he had the odd stinker. There are others I could mention but I make no apology for adding Banahan's name to that list. Never the fastest, nimblest, most skilful but ,seriously, look at his contributions in all kinds of ways. Anyone who watches carefully (and you won't pick this up on TV) will notice the amount of quiet decision making throughout a match at important moments, never mind those physical moments where he still frequently nails a situation. If the club didnt make an effort to keep him I might be tempted to stay at home in London and watch Rosalyn Park instead. Of course this is a sentimental view from an old school lifetime fan completely at odds with the reality of modern professional sport so perhaps there is a good case for enjoying amateur sport in the lower leagues as an antidote!

If it's a forward with a lot of international caps, Richie Gray comes to mind. He would be a plausible replacement for either Charteris or Attwood - for different reasons I can't see them both being here next season - and he has been mentioned before as a possible target.

However, that doesn't tie in with the earlier suggestion that we're after an EQ lock, which could be Spencer.

Of course Will Spencer and his agent, with contract negotiations with Worcester pending or already underway, have absolutely nothing to gain from a seed being sown that he may be tempted back down to the Rec.

Maybe I'm a cynic, but honestly, if I was a professional sports person and my agent DIDN'T engage in some kind of shenanigans like this in an attempt to secure me the best possible deal they could, I'd be asking them what they were doing to earn their fees.

Well if the reports are correct from the event last night on the other thread, that he has been offered double the salary and 3 years then he would be pretty crazy not to feather his nest before retirement. if it really is that high and long we would probably be nuts to match it tbh.

If he's been offered double salary then I think that's a deal that the club should not match and, as a professional, he should probably take. Maybe some complacency in the initial offer, but double salary for three years is pretty tough to justify in a salary cap.

Tbh if Banners has been offered that elsewhere I would urge him to take it. He is worth his weight in gold off the pitch as a tremendous ambassador for the club but on the pitch I am afraid I would think it silly of us to offer him that much on a three year deal!

What I hope we do not do though is throw a load of money at Ben Te'o as a result! Is it only me who is not a fan or desperate for him to come to the Rec?

With a number on here complaining about the style of rugby we are playing win or lose I do not see how a crash ball merchant at 12 will help us sadly! Surely those who are complaining who definitely prefer to see a secondary ball player, such as Mills as someone above suggested, at 12 for us?

The fact that Teo may not directly spread the play is true however its rather naive to think having a big wrecking ball 12 wouldn't facilitate the opening of more space out wide to be used. At the moment the lack of big 12 (or tbh multiple big ball carriers in the pack) is meaning that we are unable to go wide as the space just hasn't been created. As every U12 coach in the country says "you have to earn the right to go wide".

Also for me Teo was one of the standout players on the Lions tour and would've been given opportunities by Jones in the 12 channel this autumn had he been fit. Would be an asset however with JJ and Watson already England regulars id prefer someone who doesn't miss so much of the season.

Have to say Te'o always seemed to add a bit more than crash ball. He offloads often which results in quick, broken play which is where Bath score a lot of their tries. However his work rate off the ball can be question, even then though his defensive positioning and effectiveness is pretty good from what I've seen. I remember he closed out a 3 on 1 in his last game before injury which takes some doing!

Also would he not be a marquee player? I believe he's in around 300k at Worcester. Could be wrong.

Nope, you're not alone.
Te'o's a good player, with a tendency to die with the ball a bit too much for my liking; and more to the point; he's never convinced me as a team man. He strikes me as the sort of person who does what looks good for Ben Te'o; gets on the highlights reel etc; but doesn't get down and do the dirty, unglamorous stuff; not one to take one for the team; and has never really shown any loyalty to anyone other than himself.
This worries me a lot less an international level - which is where he wants to be; but I think that club rugby is a means to an end for him; but is considered essentially beneath him.

As for Marquee - he couldn't be; he's playing in the Prem this year.

£300k doesn't get you close to being a marquee these days (even if he could be)! I would have thought that most in the prem are £500k plus based on the numbers being banded about in the news for people like Faf, Beale, Biggar et al.

I have just had a thought but wasn't Luke Romano rumoured earlier in the year as a possible option? He is 31 or so and is unlikely to make the next ABs World Cup squad given the competition from Tuipolotu and the Barrett second row being much younger and up and coming.

Perhaps he is back on the market and interested? (This is where someone will post an article to him being signed until 2020 or something...)

As for the Te'o one - I do think we can find a good player who's a 12 and is physical but not a smash em up the middle player like Jamie Roberts or Te'o. I have always been a fan of Francis Saili and he was excellent at the Blues in NZ and at Munster but seems to have gone quiet at Quins - is this injury or form related??

Cant be Teo though as the rumour is that its a forward "with a tonne of caps"

Ex Crusaders so a link there! Hope he has got over his attack of the mumps though!

Who gets mumps nowadays? Anyway at least this is the type of medical condition we can deal with!

I broke the Romero story after being tipped off by a journalist mate in New Zealand. The trail went cold when Romero was unexpectedly called back into the All Blacks squad. With the international season closing itís quite possible it could be back on for next season, Iíll check my source.

I recall Romano signing a new deal with Crusaders after he was announced in the All Black squad. Shame really as it feels as though Hansen will never consider him with the new talent coming through but chucked him a game or two just to keep him in New Zealand.

Thanks Malco. Much appreciated.

Would be a good one if true as he is definitely in the big lump mould of a second row - is 31 so for a front five forward that's pretty much peak and for a couple of years could really teach the younger guys like Ewels and Stooke a few decent tricks I am sure whilst still offering plenty on the pitch!

Ben Te'o? Lots of rumours last summer. Would be a substantial cap impact.

If we are looking at Worcester centres surely its Mills we want; young and English, more of a second play maker than a crashball specialist but would offer more than a thirty plus Teo who has barely played in the premiership?

Soon to be out of contract too - he only signed for another year last summer.

Surely we don't need a young guy with potential coming into the squad, we need someone who is going to come in and immediately add value to the team, leading the young and inexperienced guys we've already got in the midfield: Clark, Max Wright, Tom de Glanville.

The report back is that Romero is believed to have signed a two year contract extension, so I think it is very unlikely that he will now be considering an overseas move.

Mills is a 'generation' older than those guys - would be 26 by September. Tom de Glanville is 17.

Yes and how about last year or the year before? So completed 9 out of 50 or 60 games?

Really great player when fit, great to watch but one of those who is unlucky with injuries and so not a great use of the cap in my view. Manu the same, game changer IF you can get him on the pitch.

I wish him the best of luck but, for those reasons you are still welcome to him.

Personally I would welcome Henry Trinder at Bath because he has that rare commodity of speed both of thought and deed, excellent hands and strong tackler and can be absolutely devastating on his day.

Good luck to him, but still think he would thrive at Bath.

I quite like Trinder but I can't imagine him coming here tbh with you and would personally prefer an out and out 12's signature given we already have the premier 13 in England on our books (that's JJ - not Henry Slade before you get confused BoB as I know you love Exeter). For Trinder's sake I hope he can just continue to get a run of form together as is a great player as others mentioned but if he can just be ropey against us I'd appreciate that.

Also thank you for the Romano update Malco. I did think I'd read somewhere that he may be extending in NZ. Shame as he would be a great addition to the squad imo.

Does anyone have anything on potential backline signings for next season? Given it seems Banners is off and potentially Tapuai too it would leave us with only JJ, Clark and Wright as midfield options which worries me.
We would then only also have Roko, Watson, Williams, Jack Wilson, Brew and Tom Homer as back three options which doesn't seem enough? I also am not sure on the contract lengths of Williams, Wilson and Brew?

I can't imagine we'll get anymore signings for this season, particularly in the back line as they've extended James Wilson's deal for the remainder of it.

We've got good back 3 cover without Banahan and a good enough replacement in Brew anyhow, I'm sure they'll spend the spare cap on the midfield. Its a shame we never kept hold of Kristian Phillips, that guy was absolutely rapid and doesn't appear to have found another club.

Banahan 3 year deal at the Shed. Tapaui and Auterac to Quins all look certain now. Does that change our recruitment targets or was it all expected/managed that way?

Is Tapaui certain then? Even if it is, criticism of management has been proven unfounded, I'm happy to wait and see. Personally I'd like to see if Josh Lewis can do a job, I know its an ask but he used to rotate between 10 and 12 at Ebbw Vale.

I would assume that Bath have replacements as that is a stack of salary freed up. As we know, we already have a new talented loosehead.

We will have to replace Tapuai if hes leaving no matter what, Banahan probably has more worth as midfield cover than winger for us as we've got good strength on the wings. So I'm confident that two centres would be brought in.

As above, Mills from Worcester can be one of them. Lewington on the wing. Maybe do a BOGOF with their young centre Williams. Or Joe Munro of Ealing Trailfinders and Dean Adamson of Bedford Blues... Loads of talent out there!

For once I agree with you Matt. Like other Prem. Clubs, we should look to recruit young talent from the Championship and the other leagues and develop them which no doubt would be much cheaper and probably develop more team spirit and loyalty for giving them a chance.

This is a longer term objective and obviously we have to replace Tapuai in the shorter term if he does actually move on.

Going back to the original post. Even with a couple resigning and a new prop and Banners, Auterac and Taps leaving thereís still ten more out of contract to decide on. Plus s couple of new signings hopefully. Lots and lots to do, canít under estimate how much.

Well a quick check of the squad on the offy shows the likes of Green, Walker and Davies recruited into the Academy from lower divisions and in the first team squad we have recruited Phillips, Lewis, Dunn, Perenise and Walker from clubs below the Prem

Not a bad record IMHO

The mighty, all conquering Exeter started their recruitment strategy further down the pecking order and fair play to them for that - from were we are we need a sensible balance of hyper stars, established quality and young potential or risk slipping a long way down if we put most of our eggs into young talent from the Championship

People like Jennings worry me - I know that he is still only 21 but he but seems to have gone nowhere recently (apart from on loan to Ealing, Jersey, London Scottish). Brett Heron, Adam Hastings, all of these talented young 10s lost their way under Ford etc. and we really need to be pulling out all the stops to bring these young lads through into the team for the reasons above.

Exactly, hasta.

It's like young Tom Heathcote. Great wailing and gnashing of teeth when he left... but he now sits on the Worcester bench, at best. (I realise he's had his problems with injury, for which I wish him well). The jury is still out on Devoto, too.

I guess we will find out. Hastings was certainly very green when he was with us - he has only had 2 starts and 2 subs for Glasgow this year. Assume with Finn R moving on he may get more next year?

I think that I am probably being very unfair in expecting magic from more of them when we have been spoiled with gems like Ellis, Obano and Mercer. I guess 10 is a role that players (with exceptions Ford, M.Smoth) grow into.
