Again, 12 mile diff, but it rained overnight and all the snow on the roads had melted. This is your friendly snow update from West-North West London.

I suppose there must be a valid reason, but how come it was ok for the Quins snowmatch to go ahead, and not this one? I watched a bit of the Quins game and it honestly didn't look safe for the players with the level of snow. Not that this of course, is a consideration these days.

probably because it was still nothing to do with the pitch
Safety of the players has far more to do with the hardness of the ground -which really wasn't an issue; than fluffy stuff falling out of the sky

Clermont no happy and pulling no punches!

Snippet from their statement using Google Translate

"In this story, the club has never been invited to the negotiating table and must adapt to the incompetence of the public authorities and Saracens to organize this major sporting event as it is nevertheless indicated in the specifications of the competition ... all at the expense of the sports preparation of the players and "having fun" with our fans as with vulgar toys"

It has been suggested Sarries deliberately delayed the game so that their players have more rest/recuperation time after their last game and loss, and make Clermont feel even more unsettled/uncomfortable and probably most of their fans having to go home to work. Quins managed to play after all.

Certainly, the organisation doesn't seem very professional to me. Or is that deliberate? Interesting.

Would be very surprised if it’s anything sinister, just a bit of a cock-up. The communication seems to have been the worst part - late and conflicting information for fans of both sides. Presumably it is pretty difficult for a few Sarries fans to watch tonight as well as CA fans.

Looking forward to watching it on the box tonight nonetheless.

I gather there's video footage around taken just before the game was due to be played showing a furniture van almost slide into the BT TV truck - which may give some clues as to why, after an unexpected but significant fall of snow, it wasn't considered safe to have people trying to get into the stadium, potentially not even safe for the players etc to make the journey in. As for Quins, that game was sufficiently further south for most of the day to have been like it was in Bath with rain and sleet rather than prolonged snow fall, so the roads etc never got to the state they did north of the M4 corridor.

Having said that, the decision making seems to have been particularly "old fart" style - no-one seeming willing to make a decision and stand by it, hence the original plan to play behind closed doors at 2pm changing to 5:30pm (after the players had gone to bed so potentially affecting nutrition planning) which apparently was because they couldn't get an ambulance on site at 2pm.

I think Clermont have every right to be annoyed, but I doubt it's sinister.

That being said I will never not enjoy seeing the Frogs get wound up. Good fun.

What were Clermont doing on their own line there? Poor body positions they were asking to be turned over or have a pen against them. More French brainfarts...lucky not to be punished by Sarries.

This game is a perfect example of why Alex Goode is a defensive liability. Slips off tackles and never in position to make the try saving tackle attempts. Such a shame as he is so creative going forward.

So we were whitewashed in weekends results, someone explain to me why France are supposedly a walkover in the 6N's?

BathMatt53

11 December, 2017 20:13
Because they don’t have many French playing in their Euro teams. I note that Raka has just qualified.

The eye watering thing is that most of the losses for the English teams this weekend were both comprehensive and home fixtures. The coaching had better be spot on this week as some of these teams will be in cauldrons this weekend...

Stunning result by a fantastic club and something their fans thoroughly deserved.

Crisis at Saints.
Is there a crisis at Sarries?

Not good that all the English teams were beaten with a number of hammerings (Saints, Sarries, Tigers,& to a lesser extent Exeter).

And the Top 14 is a shambles, regardless of one-off matches. The clubs are pretty much at war with the national team, which also doesn't help. French teams are the most unfit in Europe. The list goes on.

French teams haven’t looked the most unfit in Europe. They may train differently but they aren’t falling off in the last 15 mins as far as I can see. They are (very) highly paid professionals after all. They do focus very strongly on Euro matches though, like the Irish teams etc.

Sarries have become a victim of their own success: players are so good they attract international and Lions selection, so they’re constantly knackered or injured.

It's well known that fitness levels in France aren't anywhere near clubs in the UK. It's a low priority for them. Perhaps that's changing but it has certainly been the case for the last few years.

The irony of annie blackthorn telling someone else not to make a fool of themselves.

Quote:
However, Gatland has cited a lack of adequate fitness training at French clubs as one reason that players based on the continent may not be selected.
The head coach said: "We had an experience with Mike Phillips on the weekend (for Wales against New Zealand) where he was blowing after 52 minutes and we had to get him off.

"He was not there, and playing in France you run the risk of not being looked after in terms of our standards and expectations.

"They have a different philosophy out there. They are quality players, but the preparation and approach is different.

"If they do fitness it's normally with one fitness guy who puts a programme up on a wall and the players are not monitored as keenly as clubs in the UK and Ireland probably do, and that is what players have to look at.

"Are they physically in the best shape to compete at the highest level even though they may be playing quite well in France?"

"We’re thinking about sending one of our trainers to France to do extra work with them."

Wow, those few hundred CA supporters sure made a lot of noise! They were amazing last night (as they were when we played them at the Stoop in April 2007).

In terms of fitness you are obviously correct BO that it used to be notorious(ly bad) in France but my understanding is that the influx of foreign coaches and fitness coaches in particular improved this. Toulon are the ones that I had read about previously.

They seem to be conditioned better now, Bastareaud notwithstanding.

Wales and their media are always doing this with the European results. Whilst this week was a shocker for English sides, I do not see that it will mean anything come 6N time. We will pick our best 23 players and go from there. How Bath did against Toulon does not matter.

I presume Annie maybe meant to say La Rochelle? They were amazing and try telling any Wasps fan who watched it that they were ‘unfit’! They played at a hugely high tempo from 1st min to last in a performance that was breathtaking, refreshing and simply irresistible. Their prop Priso was all over the park, and looked /played more like a centre.
