SRU to buy Worcs?
11 December, 2017 18:00
[www.worcesternews.co.uk]

Interesting development if true. Not sure how it would fit with potential conflicts if they played the Scottish sides in Europe? (Does them SRU not fund them too?)

It would be strange if the Premiership allowed this when they restricted the amount that Altrad could buy of Glos to 20%, he ‘only’ owns one other club.

What would the salary cap have to do with it?

It's the conflict of interests that makes it highly unlikely.

Has to be a non-starter! Imagine Glasgow or Edinburgh playing Wuss in Europe?

I read the article as suggesting that Worcs would sort of a be development side? Like the failed London Scottish tie up previously? Seems like an odd (and expensive) way to do it if that is the case but I suspect that I am misunderstanding the relationship.

Would there only be Scottish players there and, if not, what would happen when the foreign players are performing better than the Scottish internationals? Would the country be able to control selection? "Can of worms" springs to mind.

They are 5.4m in debt I think.

The financial risk of buying an existing asset is substantially less than the risk of building your own.

The papers seem to think that European Rugby would block any sale anyway.

I can't see how Prem Rugby could allow it and block Altrad.

...other than for obvious 'it's hilarious because it's Gloucester' reasons.

Glos seem to be doing absolutely fine without Altrad to be fair.

They had one but let it fail 10 years ago. Disaster for Scottish Rugby that. Great Rugby tradition in the Borders. Would like to see that reborn rather than Worcester.

didn't it fail because it didn't have an local support? Aberdeen's turn next if they ever find the cash

If you buy Worcester you at least have an asset. Nothing similar exists in Aberdeen or Galashiels, so why development there is much riskier.

The reasons for the SRU (or a SRU aligned businessman to buy Wuss are:

- Premiership Quality stadium
- One of the best academies in the country
- Good training facilities
- Scottish Qualified resources already strong in Worcester
- Approx £4M+ TV money per year
- Existing supporter base
- Good base for Exiles in England and Wales
- It will seriously annoy the RFU

The SRU are pretty expert at reducing debt and Im certain they would sort Wuss out.
As Hasta mentions, its a better investment to make than set up another ProTeam in Scotland from scratch.

WW supporter in peace - not seen as our favourite way out of the current mire to be honest for many many reasons. Not quite sure how many Scots players we have at the moment - Heathcote but he is more or less permanently injured, may be one or two saffers with a granny from the Highlands but no more than that.

Rugby Union is fast becoming a business and branding operation.
The concept of supporting your own local team and promoting the game itself is diminishing into the background.
Not sure that this is the sort of product that I'm interested in.

Has Denton left you Sutton Warrior in peace?

Certainly not and has just been called (back) up by Scotland. An odd omission Sutton.

Personally feel this has no legs at all unless they are piggybacking on another bid. RFU wouldn’t allow a full takeover.
