O/T Music 2017
31 December, 2017 16:56
Last minute I know, but top recommendations of 2017? There have been some great albums. For me:

St Vincent - Masseduction
Alt-J - Relaxer
Waxahatchee - Out in the Storm
Laura Marling - Semper Femina
Sia - This Is Acting
Charly Bliss - Guppy

Not a vintage year TBH, but well worth a listen are:

Eliza Carthy & The Wayward Band - Big Machine
Felix Hagen & The Family - Attention Seeker
John Otway - Montserrat
Oh Susannah - Girl in Teen City
Robert Plant - Carry Fire

How old are you whippersnappers ? I’ve heard of Robert Plant and Laura Marling and recall an annoying Christmas song by Sia but haven’t heard of any of the others.

Santa brought me Steve Winwood Greatest Hits Live on Vinyl, ELO live at Wembley on Vinyl. Marvellous but not exactly cutting edge and certainly not as trendy as Waxyhatcheezy (Sm124)

I'd love to claim some trendy coolness, but the truth is I like one song about every 2 episodes of NPR's All Songs Considered and that's how I discover new music (and Waxahatchee - on her fourth album after being a member of P.S. Eliot)

OK, that does sound kinda wanky. But seriously Waxahatchee are great and NPR All Songs Considered is great.

Can't say I've heard of any of those, my preference is rap and hip hop

Must be honest that wasn't on my radar, but will certainly have a listen on iTunes

I'm starting the year hoping someone in the States introduces another 'new' music genre (it usually comes from there), as this rap/hip-hop is getting past it, now.

My 2017 highlight was the 2nd Wolf Alice album Visions of a Life; St Vincent's Masseduction left me unmoved and the 3rd [The] Strypes album, Spitting Image was closer to their barnstorming debut and more enjoyable than their wayward 2nd record. I kept reading about how good the 2017 offering from LCD Soundsystem was but have yet to listen to it. I might get around to that this week...

Beck, Colours. This time he does pop and it's dance around the room gorgeousness. Bicep album great too for contemporary house.

American Alt Country is my main thing, so I may be out of kilter with most of you. If we're sticking with 2017, I'd go for:

Allison Moorer and Shelby Lynne - Not Dark Yet
Jason Isbell - The Nashville Sounds
Margo Price - All American Made
Chris Stapleton - From a Room: Volume 1
Lee Ann Womack - The Lonely, the Lonesome and the Gone

I couldn't quite get into Wolf Alice, preferred her on Alt-J's album. Some of the the St Vincent tracks aren't great, but songs like Los Ageless and New York are amazing.

The XX's new album was ok. A couple of excellent tracks, but otherwise not earth shattering. Lorde pretty good.

Good call on Jason Isbell (also best concert I went to last year)
Also War on Drugs - A Deeper Understanding
Police Dog Hogan - The Side Of The Road
Ryan Adams - Prisoner
David Ramirez - We're Not Going Anywhere
Emancipator - Dusk To Dawn

If you know anything about music you will be able to see that that is an eclectic list

Happy New Year and here's to some great new sounds in 2018

Over the year here are a few that have not been mentioned:

The Navigator: Hurray for the Riff Raff

Do you like Rock Music: B.S.P

Sleep well Beast: The National (also check out Andrew Bird’’s series: “Live from the Great room”: [www.pastemagazine.com])

Followed Annie Clarke for ages but Masseduction for me is missing her raw power.

L.C.D Soundsystem “American Dream” is on their way back to the days of : [www.youtube.com]

A song that describes the arc of bath rugby ?
