Josh Lewis Off at End of Season and Jack Walker Extends Contract
15 January, 2018 15:17
He's off to Dragons at the end of the season. Guess that's another new 10 that we'll need. He looked confident and played well the one game I saw him in.

Lewis Off

And Hooker Jack Walker is extending his stay

Walker extends stay

Lewis has had very few first team appearances, so the move is understandable - I did think him useful when he played.

Walker = good news!

Walker very good news. Hopefully can get him fully fit as a superb player. Potentially the best hooker we have, and will be nice to have 3 hookers on our books next season which when called upon will not lead to a drop in quality to the team.

My worry with Walker is that hes broke the same foot 3 times.

That's the connundrum with a 3rd-choice player in pretty much any position. If they are any good, someone else will want them as their 1st or 2nd choice.

Hopefully we’ve bought him some steel toe-cap boots!

Does that mean you would prefer him to break the other foot?

Shame about Josh Lewis. Would like to see more of him and hopefully we will in the AWC but I suppose it is a bit late now!

Good to have Walker sign on again. Have a good spread of ages now at hooker with Batty the exerience, Dunn the incumbent and Walker the up and comer!

Josh was as good a third choice 10 as you could hour for. Shame for us by fair play to him - his ascent from semi pro has been meteoric.
Great news about Walker. Let's put some meat on him!

I don't see the need for 3 10s, get a 12 who can cover 10 and we're done.

Such as, we don't do that though as it compromises our centre, take recent 12's SB, Eastmond, Clark, Tapuai, Banners, fancy any of those as a 10? Or our recent signing Willison perhaps.

I think we need a specialist at 10 not a make do, even if it's an academy player.

I'm okay with Khan as back-up FH for a match or two, but I'd want a 3rd specialist in the wider squad somewhere, at least as an academy member who's ready to step up.
TBH, I wouldn't be happy with any position only having 2 players to cover it, let alone a position where you really want 2 in a match-day squad.

I always look at it as wanting 2 full XVs and a bench, with extras (including academy players who are ready) to cover expected internationals, or high attrition positions.
So 3 of each front row, 5 locks 7 backrowers, 3 SHs, 3 FHs, 4-5 centres and 6-7 back3s + international/attrition cover.

WT that's OK for a couple of games but for a season? We only need a HIA and a hamstring and we have no 10!

We need 9,10 and 12 to be specialists its the spine of the team, when we fudge 12 it goes wrong, why would 10 be different?

We currently don't have a 4th choice senior specialist FH. How many teams do? I can't think of any TBH

There are plenty of 12s that cover 10 more than adequately and we've had them in the past Henson, Ob1 and Catt... OD if you must. The fact that since those our position at centre has been totally neglected isn't really that much of an argument.

An up and coming, just out of academy lad would be a good idea, but anyone else is going to be at best flaky, more likely just a waste. If RP and FB did get injured we'd bring in an injury joker at least as good as a 4th choice player we keep knocking around in the off chance he is needed for a game. In other words, do you want another Allinson at 10?

Given his injury problems, Jack Walker must be seen as a real deal to offer him a new contract. Good news, in my opinion, though I think Lewis has a lot more to offer than we've seen so far.

That's a while ago Dan, but the point is with a trend for line breaking 12's a 12 that cover 10 isn't that common today with the exception of Farrell. Who in our squad could do that other than Kahn, who has a limited shelf life and isn't a 12?

"with a trend for line breaking 12"

Is that actually the current trend?

Yes, I thought that as I was writing it, it is something Bath are looking for though since Fruean left so is part of TB's recruitment. I think that it depends if you have the personnel to run a Ford/Farrell setup. This type of player is at a premium, it might even be an international luxury.

The alternative would be a player who gets you over the gainline, so it is a trend by default if that makes sense!

Personally, I'd like to see a 9 who is a specialist 9 who can pass. (Don't care if he is a quasi back row or not), a 10 who runs, makes a break or two and can kick and a 12 who is aggressive and makes room for those outside him.

Old fashioned perhaps?

This is where more emphasis needs to be put on the academy. This is where 3rd choice 10s (and most backs) and 4th choice forwards should be coming from. ATM our academy seems to consist of 5th and 6th choice props and few wingers. Rory Jennings ought to be our cover at 10 and Max Green and Max Wright 9 & 12. I know Wright is injured, but the other two look 4th choice at best.

If Rory Jennings is staying on at Bath, then surely to goodness he is next year's 3rd choice 10. Any other outcome is going to look, frankly, a bit odd. He'll be one of our longer-serving players by next season and still listed as in the Academy.

"12 that cover 10 isn't that common today with the exception of Farrell."

It's really not that uncommon, many AP teams have at least one, occasionally 2, and if you just say "cover from another position" its pretty much everyone (including us). Add in an young lad and the possibility of injury jokers and I just don't see the need for an also ran.

Not especially pertinent but this talk of 'covering fly-half' has made me recall the match when Pezza started at 10.

I think he was 5th choice. Can't recall who else was missing. Eliota F-S? Nicky Little? Something like that...
