Not sure what Underhill did last week to justify selection ahead of Paul Grant - but i guess he'll be better for having shaken off the rust.

Opti

My guess is that Underhill is in at the start for his destructive contribution. Grant can then come on to play the more rounded game as the game opens up & opposition defence tires.

I wonder how we are going to get a full team together for next week (Anglo Welsh I believe)since we will be losing our 5 England players (although one or two may be returned later on)

Shame we did not manage to pick up another BP along the way, as it would have been good to see 3 teams all going at it ti win the Pool. As it is though this is a dead rubber.

My understanding was a BP win for us and no BP of any kind in the other match would be enough?

Re: Teams Up
19 January, 2018 13:56
I don't think we can get through as one of the best runners up, unless there is a very weird set of results else where.

f the Scarlets beat three-time winners Toulon they will win the pool. French side Toulon need a win or draw in Wales to guarantee progress, although a losing bonus point would almost certainly be enough too.

If Toulon lose without gaining a losing bonus point they would be eliminated by a Bath bonus-point victory against Benetton.

Bath would then be confirmed as runners-up because they would be level on 18 points with Toulon, going through because they outscored the French side 46-45 over their two games. However, this may not be enough to be one of the best 3 runners up.

If Scarlets lose without picking up a bonus point they too would be eliminated by a Bath bonus-point victory. However, if the English side do not secure a bonus point, Scarlets would go through because they outscored Bath 48-35 in their two matches.

Benetton are already eliminated.

But 18 points might not be enough to beat the runners up in other pools?

Re: Teams Up

So the rubber is not quite dead......a clear win to either Scarlett's or Toulon and we are second. But.....I am still not convinced that 5 points against Benetton is that easy.
But Nick you are normally pessimistic so we may lose !

I can't help but feel that it would be fairer if it were just 4 pools and the top two went through. It would cut out some of the chaff as well, or increase the number of games and go for pools for 5 if you must.

Another team will go through rather than us (probably) based on their performances against totally different teams. In some ways that makes less sense, is less fair, than the LV format.

I suppose you can always argue that any such competition is unfair cause you might play team XYZ when they are injured or otherwise out of form, but this is baked into the competition.

The bonus points are our undoing. We have won the same number of games as Scarlets but have 4 fewer BPs...

Meaning, they won their games better than we did and didn't lose as badly. So they are the better team - but I think we know that deep down

Was obvious last weekend that the guys are exhausted, the injuries have taken their toll on the guys that are churned out every week. Controversial but there's no way we will progress further, I would have rested as many people as possible this week, but I guess who the hell is available...maybe the colts or the bath uni side.

yeah, I guess it's vitally important that our stars are properly rested ahead of the AWC. The fact* that our EPRC squad has 25 fit players to choose the 23 from be damned, they should all be rested instead.

* This may not be factual, but it's certainly been written written here without contest.

Exeter would never lose to a team full of running, off-loading, support lines, aggressive rucking etc, they wouldn't even lose their shape in defence, let alone lose such a match.
