Juan Pablo Socino and Will Chudley
28 January, 2018 10:30
Fissler reckons that he 'is close to agreeing to join' Bath, although we are 'fighting off a late bid from Edinburgh'.

He also confirms that Chudley has now completed his move to Bath.

I'm pleased about Chudley, but a bit surprised about Socino. Is he that different a player from Taps?

Socino is a solid reliable player with good experience and good skills. Maybe past his best as he will be 30 this year (although as I know from my recent potential return to the colours age I not a barrier at Bath) and lacks real pace, but still a good potential signing if it comes off. He is relatively small and has a very similar skill set to Tapuai. Interesting.

Chudders will have to learn to play behind an underperforming pack but could well provide the spring board we need to get people involved and playing. When he has played well for the Chiefs, he really makes them tick, and at pace, as he moves the ball so quickly from breakdowns. His box kicking is good but not always the most accurate. But again much of that is down to the chasers, which Exe do very well.

Very nice polite friendly individual who is a pleasure to talk to.

Seeing Socino when he has played against us, I'd be delighted with that. Ripped us to shreds a few times, a little more versatile than Tap.s (covers FH to 3rd/4th choice standard), though he may die with the ball a bit much.
I guess ultimately, he's a little more valuable than Tap.s, and they may differ in wage demands. Or it could be that we lost Tap.s, and Socino is who's available at a similar price.

Chudley is probably an upgrade on all of our SHs, so it's difficult to be upset, just a shame he looks like replacing Homer rather than Allinson. Kahn is still capable of greatness, but his form can fall off a cliff if he plays too much, Cook still flatters to deceive on occasion, some very good matches to build up hope, but equally capable of dross. Allinson just isn't Prem standard, even as 3rd choice, whilst Homer and Green both look promising for the future, I'd be happy with either at 3rd/4th choice, but worried about either starting a must-win match.

I agree about Socino's versatility. He's a specialist centre now, but he has plenty of experience at 10, so we might save on a third flyhalf.

Tapuia would've looked much better playing for Newcastle yesterday. Will be interesting to see how Socino might do taking the ball standing still with 3 defenders around him.
I feel our problems are systemic rather than the wrong personnel.

I probably don't know what i'm talking about.

I still can't figure out where Chudley fits, I'd still play Kahn over him and I can't imagine he'll be that happy on the bench but pleased nevertheless.

Socino would be a excellent signing, albeit not quite the crash ball 12 I had in mind. Despite his size, he does run very hard lines and is incredibly strong, easily one of the best 12s of the AP in the last couple of seasons, Newcastle can't be willing to let him go.

I've been very impressed with Socino whenever I've seen him play this season. Direct, always breaks gain line and keeps defenders guessing. Wonder why Newcastle would let him go - is he first choice when all are fit? Ideal replacement for Taps with added bonus of 10 cover as others say.

Shipwrecked - suspect Flats isn't the only fan of Sinoti's. So good they named him twice! Not sure why Newcastle would let him go but would take him in a heartbeat. Winger first and foremost I believe.

Very happy with Chudley as well. Would put him on a par with all the other SH talent Chiefs have, just the age factor that isn't on his side (though as we've seen with Khan he should have a good few years in him yet).

These two signings would go a long way in healing the wounds left by Banners/Taps departure (for me).

And yep, Allinson. What are his tea-making skills like? Sorry to be mean, but he's just not up to it.

Socino made some serious dents in us yesterday, which we had to scramble to recover from.

As Dan says - it would depend how we use him- but assuming we can get him the ball quickly, on the right running lines, I can see him fitting well in our backline.

I think that kharn and stringer are the exception age wise rather than the rule. Even then, whilst there's an arguement for playing kharn over chudley now, I don't think it will still be there next year, that's starting to be apparent already I'd say.

I would love to have Socino sign on. A player I must admit I have really admired at Newcastle when they have played us and in particular with their running rugby at times this season. Always happy to do some ugly carries and makes good decisions on when to pass or not I think. Has a decent boot, offloads nicely and has the best top knot in the AP.

Chudley would also be an excellent signing I believe and come in as first choice for me with either Kahn or Cook on the bench. That would likely suit Khan if he stays as is getting no younger but his experience off the bench would be excellent or Cook's dynamism as a change off the bench also good.

If we play Underhill at 7 it doesnít really matter if 10 & 12 arenít fantastic defenders as he will own that channel. I would happily lose a bit of defensive nouse to gain some penetration up the middle in attack...

Itís sounding increasingly likely that we are not a chosen destination for the most sought after players maybe because they have heard something they donít like. Weíve lost Tapuai & Banahan & signed a second choice centre from Worcester but all the other rumours are fading. With amazing training facilities & exciting ground development plans we should have no difficulty in attracting players but clearly we are not doing so nor retaining the ones we have. It doesnít inspire optimism.

I am beginning to wonder at the balance of our squad - whether we have too much of the cap invested in certain "trophy" players at the expense of having a good balance across the squad. That might be a workable strategy if it wasn't for the fact that between international calls and injuries, some of our biggest names are rarely seen on the pitch in our shirts. What that also means is that the supporting cast, needed to enable these big name to shine, have to be made up of cheap players because so much has gone on a few.

For example Faletau, for all his class and ability has only played 6 out of 25 games this season - and even discouting the Anglo Welsh where perhaps someone of his calibre would have been rested even if fit, its down to 6 out of 21. You can rarely find someone of that quality floating around waiting to be signed as injury cover so if he's not fit, having salary credits when hes injured doesn't really help.

Yes and no - he's outside the cash figure but if the cap is £xm + two players with the expectation being that those two extras are your star performers, we're not getting much out of those one of those two players, and because of the limits on injury replacements certainly couldn't pay a massive amount for someone to replace him.

Regardless of player quality, we are severely lacking behind the top 3 in certain skills like clearing out, targeting the ball in tackles, defensive decision making i.e. not jumping out of the line.

Personally I don't think our attack is as bad as its made out, we do play very laterally but you can't say we don't create opportunities, holding onto the ball is the real problem.

Its our defence thats been ripped apart since xmas, offloads are killing us and we just don't seem to target the ball in the tackle, even if its 2 or 3 men making that tackle teams have still managed to offload it or place the ball immediately giving them quickball. I find it incredibly puzzling why this hasn't been picked up and worked on.

I think the main problem is from what I have heard is there is unrest amongst the playing side - People can make up their own my personal opinion from people I know is - the non playing side have caused this, but other people can have their own views obviously.

BathMatt - makes a point about players joining clubs who are not presently challenging for silverware but they when they joined they were harmonious with a vision.

At present as Dan Evans has said in the Chron - we do not even know whether TB will be here next year (Disaster if not) what key player wants to join a club that:

1. Has a less than harmonious dressing room/training paddock/non-playing management interference.

2. No guarantee that the DoR (Who is very well liked by the players) will be at the club next season.

All we can do as supporters is just that keep cheering the club on, however the fact the club is not making any official statements about the unrest and TB's future coupled with Dan Evans comments about potential libel action if he prints anything which has nit been confirmed is quite damning evidence as the non playing management are in control of the media releases and all they want to talk about is the new stadium.

You may have hit the nail on the head ALI1969. The focus of the money management at the top of the club is the new stadium and possibly rightly so.

However, the eye has been taken off the ball on the playing side, as if it was a nuisance irritation. But people have forgotten that without a successful, happy playing side, we will never fill the very thing they are building and it will not be needed. What a waste of time and money that would be!

Lets hope after the nadir of Saturday that there is a rethinking all round and that equal importance is truly given to the playing side of the club. We definitely need some good news about new players and IMO the continuence of Todd as our coach to help him put things right on the field.

Just read we have missed or didn't want Matt Scott as he is returning to Edinburgh from Gloucester.

Shame as he could have done a job for us and has lots of experience.

I don't for a moment think that the costs of the redevelopment have anything to do with the offers we are or are not making to players to add to the squad.

I suspect it has everything to do with plans that are already in place.....

Scott has returned to his home club - suspect we would have found it hard to compete with that draw, if we did at all.

Sincerely hope we have signed Chudley. Did any of you watch the Wasps/Exe game on the box? His was an allaction, never stopped running display of rugby and could do a very good job for us. Yes we will need to beef up the pack, but he could get quick ball away to the backs from set pieces and breakdowns much quicker me thinks than any of our present scrum halves.

Sinoti has re-signed.

Love the caption:

Sinoti Sinoti has scored three goals in nine games for Newcastle Falcons this season

Isn't that Josh Matavesi in the photo anyway?

Very probably Matt. But when the BBC employs a person like Eddie Butler are you surprised they cannot get anything related to rugby right? No doubt he helped with the player identity and got it wrong for a change!

Well, I believe that technically a try AND a conversion are known as a 'goal' in Rugby Union. Happy to be corrected though.

Not sure about that. The laws do talk about the "in-goal" area and "goal lines/posts" but specifically define a "goal" as a place or drop kick between the posts.

Think you are right TallPaul but if referriing to a particular player, as long as he scores the try and the conversion, you could say he has scored 3 goals!

But I am sure this is not what the BBC meant and is much more likely to come from the Eddie Butler Office of Rugby Intelligence, ie just plain wrong and probably written by a football fan!

DW is correct according to the law of the game. It is a kick from a spot or dropped goal.

Nonetheless, he has scored 3 tries:

- Northampton Saints
- Exeter Chiefs
- Bath Rugby

no pens no DG, no conv.

They make these ridiculous mistakes all the time - the match report on the beeb from the Saints game had a picture of Nick Auterac captioned as Ross Batty for a day or two.

Yes, the "try" refers to an attempt or try at kicking a goal. It is Rugby Football after all.

My understanding is that the original aim of Rugby football was to score Ďgoalsí by kicking the ball between the posts.

To earn the right to Ďtryí a kick at goal the ball had to be touched down over the goal line. It was then Ďconvertedí into a 'goal'.

A penalty goal and drop goal are as we understand them.

Socino has kicked nuffink but has scored 3 tries...there are no circumstances where he has scored 3 goals. So interesting as this discussion is, the fact remains that the BBC were wrong with both (until they changed the pic).

This site is like the Inner Temple mooting competition sometimes!

Whilst Socino is undoubtedly a quality play, he only sticks around at clubs for a maximum of two seasons.
Rotherham - one season
Nottingham - one season
Argentina club side - one season
Rotherham again - one season
Newcastle - two seasons to date (perhaps 3 at a push)
Edinburgh - probably a season or two before heading off to Europe.

A quality player but not one who would stick around 3 or 4 seasons +

To be fair I'd imagine that is as much to do with his stock continually rising than him not being committed to any particular club! He's been a relatively late developer in top flight rugby terms and so at 29 he possibly is looking for a decent contract now either in the AP or France etc and so it may be whomever bids most, gets him!

This is his fourth season at the Falcons. He joined in the Summer of 2014.

My gosh how we need Chudley's enthusiasm and go forward but am concerned we have heard nothing from the club or Will himself.

Mind you would you sign for a club with the problems Bath have at present?
