Interesting, heíll give us the hard running centre that the coaches wanted. Is he confirmed as leaving Bris for Edinburgh or was that just rumoured?

Good loan signing - shame not permanent. Add him to Willison, JJ, Clark and then possibly Socino and we'd have gone from poor to plenty stock in the midfield all of a sudden!

Good move for him as well to get a bit of gametime back at this level again though before next season. Let's hope Bris don't profit as a result though next year!!

Great, what a quality last minute signing and a real opportunity to see what we'd look like with a big guy at 12.

The local (Bristol) paper reported that he had turned down the chance to stay at Bristol for Edinburgh but they must have tempted him to stay.

Good player, like to think it would become permanent, especially as it has been hinted that we may have trouble hanging on to JJ. Should we not be offering JJ a contract extension now to tie him to Bath now?

Can't help but feel that there is an ever-evolving strategy going on.
Centre has been a "problem" area ever since Blackadder and Matson arrived.
Admittedly by the club. another stop-gap solution until this can be resolved permanently.
Whose input was this this current thinking based on?

Perhaps we can learn a bit about Bristol from Hurrell rather than his experience with Bath coming back to bite us next year!

"Centre has been a "problem" area ever since Blackadder and Matson arrived. "

I'd say centre has been a problem longer than that. I'm trying to think back, the season when Mike Ford's diamond was working, who did we have then? KE, JJ and OD (who was used all over the place, 10, 15, only occasionally at 12 and sometimes at 13 IIRC). Was there another AP choice player who you could call an out and out centre? From memory lots of wingers that could fill in.

I'm all for a small, but quality, squad, but that still means 4 centres and cover from other positions.

I wouldn't be surprised if it goes back even further.

Ok so in the past few days we have strong rumours about Chudley, Socino and Hurrell and Joe C bubbling in the background. All of which seem excellent picks.

So given last weeks debacle about internal unrest who do we think is doing the recruiting because it seems pretty good to me!

I don't think that anyone has mentioned this about JJ apart from me BoB, it was just random speculation based on some of the maths done by others before that JJ and Watson will take up a significant wedge of the cap when they come to re-sign in 2019. Its nothing more than that and follows on from the similar situation at Sarries where some of their stars have become very valuable since when they first signed. Lets not make anything of my random murmurings (or is that a group of Starlings?).

Hurrell was one of our few standout players last year but seems to have fallen out of favour this year & has had v little game time. We were quite surprised he re-signed for next year.

Lam seems to want players who offload at every tackle from anywhere on the field, not sure if that will work in prem but that's the style wanted.

Hurrell rarely offloads and that's his major fault as far as Lam is concerned. I seem to recall Hurrell on re-signing made a statement to effect that he was sure he could add that to his game. I will follow with interest his games for Bath.

Excellent signing. He was in many people's team of the season for last season, which is quite something considering that Bris went down.

A hard-running centre who can compete at the breakdown should be very useful, especially seeing as, without Louw, we're often light at the breakdown.

I look forward to him either playing outside Taps or inside JJ. Exciting.

Good signing and I am not quite comfortable with comments such as 'good stopgap until permanent solution at centre'.

Slightly off topic, but there will never be a permanent solution, we will never have a fully fit squad, teams are always in some form of transition.

For me it is about establishing quality possession for centres and the best players there will struggle if the ball is slow and space is minimal. The best teams have patterns of play that all new players work towards so that regardless of injuries, movers and internationals they play the same structures. I don't believe you can build a team around 1 or 2 players with the absenteeism of the modern game or change style because of it.

If we can sort those other issues out then I am sure Hurrell will enjoy his time at Bath as will JJ who will be more likely to stay if he can get into space and run around defenders the way we know he can.

Welcome Will.

"Good signing and I am not quite comfortable with comments such as 'good stopgap until permanent solution at centre'. "

I think that's just a reference to the fact he's just a short term signing rather than a comment on the player. As a short term signing he IS a stopgap and would be regardless of his talent.

That's only been hinted at in your own head. Who says we haven't started negotiation with JJ already? thugh it would be extremely early in the process; you'd usually want to finish one year before starting the next; but you could well overlap for the top value players to dissuade them getting their heads turned over the summer.

Ealing have done well but Bristol will win it for sure. One thing I noticed was that last year Ealing (and Doncaster) refused promotion if they had got into the playoffs. If they automatically won the league this year could they refuse to go up? Are they even eligible? Does Trailfinders Ground meet the criteria?

If Sunday is anything to go by, Pam Lam will need to sign a whole new set of forwards if Bristol do go up. Bedford's pack destroyed them at every scrum, and many breakdowns.

I think that's what they have done isn't it? On 20th Jan they announced for next season:

- 3 props
- 2 hookers
- 1 lock
- 1 back rower
- 1 scrum half
- 1 fly half
- 1 partridge in a pear tree

A couple of games in and Hurrell is looking to be a really solid (literally) addition. A bit one dimensional, but what a dimension - you know what you are going to get and thatís wrong straight carries, huge tackles and a few turnovers.

Now, how to convince Pat Lam that he doesnít need him back?

Just caught up with the game as away all weekend. That 2 man tackle on Ratuniyarawa with possibly Stooke was outstanding. Admittedly the pace was taken out of their 2nd row, but after 75 mins to still be full of that much energy to floor a man of 22 stone was pretty impressive. Iím hoping, like others, that this loan turns into a permanent deal!

I actually thought that Hurrell was a candidate for Man of the Match for me on Friday night.

Solid in defence, physical carrying the ball into heavy traffic and with two or three excellent steals as well. Looks a very savvy signing, albeit on a short term basis.

Wouldn't mind if he wanted to join full time and based on his Instagram he seems to be enjoying representing us. Put two pictures up of him named in our team and playing on Friday night but hasn't put anything up of him in Bristol kit or playing for them for a long time before. Perhaps he is disillusioned there and worth looking at? Or perhaps I am looking into this far too much and we should just be happy he is here to play for the second half of the season!!

Interestingly on the Chronicle Q & A, it seems there could be a chance to do a deal with Bristol.

Quote:
Dan Evans
I spoke to Will before the Saints game and he said his intention was to go back to Bristol in the summer. However, he also said how much he has enjoyed being at Bath in the short time heís had so far, so you never know.
Bath and Bristol have a good working relationship and, if Pat Lam doesnít see him as one of his main centres in the Premiership next season, they might be able to do business.

Clark is more of a 13 and Hurrell more of a 12, though they can clearly cover both with a good degree of proficiency. Personally I think our best 23 would see Hurrell and JJ in the midfield with Clark on the bench, I know the coaches liked Tapuai as a left footed kicking option but if anything we play better when he doesn't kick.

Autumn Internationals, the bench etc. We need 4 solid centres with utility backup I would have thought? Depends on the Socino situation as well I would assume.

Still, as we stand Hurrell is contracted and back off to Bris for next season so not much point in speculating, fun though it is!

Agreed, personally I think its either Hurrell or Socino, I can't see how we can fit them both in.

With Chudley supposedly arriving too, I think we'll have more than enough cover at 10 with Kahn able to play there.

Socino could cover 10 though with Lewis going.

I think that's an interesting one there from Cockers. He's going down the Mike Ford route of fewer players of better quality, which as we all know works well if everyone fit and firing! Will be intriguing to see how he fares in both recruitment and keeping everyone fit! Taking us a while to get back to a larger squad of quality - anyone know the cap size in the PRO14?
