Yes, Dan Evans confirmed it is the left field signing mentioned in the Chronicle Q&A last Friday.

Looks like it. I do watch the sevens when I can and he is a talented player, does a lot of the hard work that goes unseen often in sevens. Welcome to the club!

or Jacques Boussuge.

But I'll try and be positive. I guess it a leftfield, shot in the dark that will be great if it comes off (not unlike Roko) and cost little if it doesn't.

He used to play full back for Hartpury RFC, and having asked mates who played for them, he sounds like a cracking guy who is "slightly bigger version of Charlie Sharples".

Open to seeing what he's like!

Harpbury Highlights

Looks like he is a fullback who can cover wing and outside centre too. Good pace, elusive, decent boot, plus is a nuisance at the breakdown certainly would be a useful guy to have in the 23 shirt.

Like the idea of looking further afield for talent but if our centre options next year end up being: Clark & Joseph, Socino & Williams/McConnochie/Wright then I feel we are light on experience.

I like the idea of bolstering the squad depth with strong performing fringe players but I would prefer 4 experienced centres and 2 development players. I would only consider Clark, Joseph & Socino as experienced at Premiership level

I guess it partially depends on what happens with James Wilson as well but I still feel we are one experienced centre light. If we lose Banahan and Tapuai then we should be bringing in 2 experienced centres & 1 development player.

Tapuai/Socino would be a direct swap if it happens. Banahan is only a fill in centre, the bigger issue is that we were already a centre light. So Willison is that addition.

Looks very good at those lower levels and in dome of his sevens play. Big and strong with a good turn of speed along with some good handling and kicking skills. To me he offers a lot of what Banners does, with probably more skill and pace but without MB's strength.

If Williams goes as well, he will definitely be a solid replacement with great potential for improvement. Good signing in my view and probably not the costliest.

Welcome Ruaridh.

a) we're signing another left-field Sevens player, whyyyy?

For me McConnochie is replacing Jeff.

As the rumours would suggest:

Auterac > Noguera (better)
Knight > Delmas (no idea!)
Palma-Newport > ?
Homer > Chudley (better)
TapuaI > Socino (equal)
Banahan > Cokanasiga (equal - potential counts for a lot here)
Williams > McConnochie (equal)

All seems very like-for-like in terms of playing style / player type.

The big win is Chudle,y if that comes true. I'm assuming Will Homer is off, could be wrong.

If Socino, Chudley and Cokanasiga all come true we are in a very good place next year.

Sadly I don't think it does. I've not seen Homer show his basics of passing and kicking are up to scratch. He's not been in the England U20 equation (which would suggest similar) and unlike Big Joe he's not been with senior England training.

Big Joe obviously has a lot of potential to be the player we need to replace Banahan. I'm not sure we can say the same about Will Homer. His potential is more out of hope rather than what we have seen. He is a good runner of the ball though, very quick - but then so was Matawalu!

The occasions I've seen Will Homer he's impressed me more, and been more consistent, than Cook. I don't really recall his passing being that bad, from admittedly vague memories of occasions he came on for Cook I think our platform improved. Kicking I have no recollection of.

However, I'd agree he has a degree of Andy Williams syndrome, but at his age that is probably allowable. He would need some AP (the only known cure) rugby next season though.

Personally I liked what I saw from young Homer and wished he has stayed at the club and hopefully gained more game time and top level experience. Certainly IMV he is better now than Allinson and has the potential to get better.

We regretfully for whatever reason don't seem to have given him a chance.

Coming back to the subject of this thread, RM looks to be a potentially good signing.

Its all very well strengthening the backs, but personally I would prefer to see some announcements of beefing up the pack and adding an experienced performer or two. Without good clean ball, it doesn't matter how good the backs are, we are not going to win a majority of matches.

Okay. He has played u20's (from what I can find 4 sub appearances)

I, like anyone, want him to succeed. I just can't put him in the same bracket of potential as Cokanasiga.

I seem to recall his box kicking to relieve pressure failed to gain much distance, they weren't great. But agree we need to see more of him to really assess him as a player.

Not sure we can accommodate 5 scrum halves next year, so it would appear he is off.

I think it's been suggested we are done with recruitment in the forwards, other than Phillips' contract situation.

"I seem to recall his box kicking to relieve pressure failed to gain much distance, they weren't great."

How far? I would say that one of our failings in our box kicks is that we kick too long. The opposition gather easily and we've given them an attacking opportunity. It would be well worth them being shorter and not giving them the space to attack.

If they were going literally nowhere then that's a failing, but one hat's easily improved.

"Not sure we can accommodate 5 scrum halves next year, so it would appear he is off."

I agree. But it seems a total CF that we've kept Allinson and lost him. Frankly, if we lost Kahn and Allinson, kept Homer and got Chudley we'd start to look like we're sorting our 9 problem. If it turns out as it looks like it will, we've put a sticking plaster on it.

Don't forget Max Green who is a couple of years younger than Homer - he looked like he could be the real deal for the few minutes he came on last week.

Given that Bath have to operate in a season with 10+ players injured its a real break from our previous Gold/Ford approach to recruitment, this year we have been getting in lots of cheap players from all over the gaff, we are obviously looking to increase the squad size and reduce the salary cap then rely on the academy and depth to get us through with a few out and out stars who drift in and out of internationals/fitness.

I've not seen enough of Max to really say, but perhaps the club have and that's the reason for losing Will. One thing I would say, people were saying that about Will not so long ago and indeed Cook before that.

Chudley, Cook and Green could work out well, but a lot hangs on Green taking several steps forward pretty quickly, I felt that Will's already made a few of those. It fels like a needless loss we could well regret.

Re: Ruaridh McConnochie

We really are incredibly short-sighted. When asked who the player of the season was in one of the BRTV videos most of the players said beno (quite justifiably) a few said Paul grant (again, such a hard worker who's given his all) and actually a few said allinson - not for his actual play, but for his clubmanship, for his enthusiasm and his willingness to do the things that make other people succeed around him. I agree he's not good enough to field all that often, but like in the lions tour when people mention good tourists it must be really very helpful to have good, lower level, clubmen who give their all in the ways people like flouw and faletau simply cannot afford to.
On the subject of RM, I hope he can, like super Jeff, be someone who the players get behind and can boost us in times of need even if he doesn't become the Roko of Brew who can stand up at first team level week in week out. The club is far more of a holistic entity than people tend to give it credit for. Let's at least try and understand that in our 'support'.

Are we really playing Allinson for some training ground enthusiasm? I would rather have someone who offers something on the pitch and make Allinson a coach if thats the case. I know that the Bath guys rate him highly but for me 'player of the season' means more than that.

How many said Allinson?

Either way BathMatt is right. If he's that valuable pay him to be a coach and take him out of the cap so we don't have to lose players with potential.

We seem to have a constant habit of veering off the subject. Back to RM, he couldnít sound more Irish so itís surprising he has been representing England. I watched the teamís passage to their Olympic final & they were impressive but they were all specialist 7ís players & it is very different from the 15 man game. Can we think of any examples where the switchover has been a success? I suppose like the Corbierres guy this is driven by getting someone on the cheap & hoping it works out. A few have recently.

Watched some of the 7s from Vancouver last night, and Ruaridh was very impressive - big, strong, quick, good over the ball, great tackle technique, and it goes w/out saying a fantastic engine. If (and I know it's a big one) he can convert, he'd be a right handful at 15s and an excellent addition.

Mike Ellery? He keeps getting called into the 7's team still. It's also not a surprise he isn't a first choice winger there either given they have Goode, Maitland, L Williams and the ever reliable Chris Wyles as choices there!!
