6Nations matches
03 February, 2018 13:31
Wales v Scotland kicking off soon, France v Ireland coming along later.

Welsh Rarebit on Crumpets for lunch, then plenty of Guinness in stock. May be making ever less sense as the day goes on (starting from a pretty low base though, so it may be difficult to tell)

Might want to edit the above WT, looks like you had too much Guinness on your cornflakes.

A few bottles of Felifoel in the fridge, did the shopping at 8.00am trying to manage the banter from neighbours suggesting I'll be wearing a Scotland shirt!

Looking forward to game 1.

Wales back row were excellent Navidi and Shingler in particular, Steff Evans try forward, 1/2p's second marginal, soft interception.

England need to win ball up front to starve the backs as Patchell had them fired up. But a good watch!

Cagey stuff in the 2nd game, nowhere near as entertaining as the 1st game watching as a neutral. Ironed my shirts for the week after seeing the first quarter.

independent Drs at international level these days.
First one spent quite a long time stationary on the floor.
Second knackered his knee, but was then tackled onto his head. ETA - reverse angle makes it look like he didnt contact head to ground very hard

I don't feel either lost consciousness, but there was enough there to justify having a look at both of them, and far better safe than sorry.

Wasn't he a scrum half?

I admit the HIA puzzled me - but it should not have surprised Nigel Owens. it was Owens' own signal that the player had suffered a head injury- so likely that caused the MO to decide he must do an HIA and thus to report back to Owens that the player was being assessed!

A cyclical decision - right or wrong!

Yes, then second HIA was initially called by Nige himself, stopping the game and calling for an HIA.

Both HiAs had enough that we saw to justify an HIA, even if not cast-iron.
They were both called for by an independent Dr with access to more footage than we had. This needs would have had no interest in helping France, but a big interest in not leaving a concussed player on the pitch, which is a hell of a lot better than the previous situation.
IMO, this is a price well worth paying, and EPCR and PRL should look at doing the same thing.

For those who don't remember, leaving it club Drs means that Dom Ryan is official "winded" whilst clearly out cold, Ma'afu takes a knee to the head and loses all muscle tone, bit nothing happens, Faletau gets taken of "for an HIA" to assess his knee and North gets taken off "for an HIA" to check his shoulder with no HIA even performed (when he had lost consciousness). Oh, and the French prop taken off for a dubious HIA on the instructions of then French team Dr.
The previous system had this exact same flaws with the addition of greater cynicism and the addition of failing to actually conduct the HIA, or the Dr being the only person in the country who doesn't see the lights go out.

I get what you are saying which, but from Owens reaction whist he'd initially called at as a potential head injury, he clearly wasn't convinced*. But surely if player health is the key, and why shouldn't it be, change the laws and say you can bring on a fit player who had been subbed. Giving everyone a level playing field and say you can roll subs. Make leaving an unfit player on the field unforgivable. Why not?

* I'm not saying as a ref he wasn't right to say "drs orders".

MESSAGES->author

Re: 6Nations matches

Oh, I absolutely agree that on reflection Nige was entirely unconvinced. However the call was made initially by Nige, and then by the independent match Dr who has no reason to be cynical.
Once the call has been made, it can't be unmade as far as I'm aware, so if the Dr sees one TV angle and says "we need to check" then it needs to be checked, even if another angle shows that actually it's all fine. Oh, and anyone (not you) asking for the ref to overuse the Dr is just sing ridiculous.

Given the independence of the match Dr, the BBC'S conspiracy theories are bull IMO.

Whether we go to rolling subs or not... as a rugby fan I'd hate to see that; as a medical practitioner it does seem safest.

Nope
Head Injury Assessment is to assess any potential head injury; specifically looking for signs of concussion.
You skip it if it's already failed (loss of consciousness has already been seen, by video, ref/tj or team mate)

Any idea why they have dropped the ref mic from the BBC coverage? There were a few occasions yesterday when I would have liked to have heard what was being discussed, especially this one. But also a few penalty calls in both matches where the camera wasn't watching the ref and a few conversations and a TMO decision all in silence! Quite a number of times I didn't even hear the whistle, just saw the players all stop. Is there a new directive that I have missed?

Agree about the feeds, Scotland were unlucky that they were penalised with the 1st scrum in front of their posts.

If a ref is going to set an example you don't want it to be costing you 7 points which is what happened yesterday.

Presumably the refs are mentioning this pre match to both teams so why is today's ref not imposing it?

SH doesn't have to stand central to the packs, but his shoulder does have to be (which was penalised twice yesterday IIR, SH stood too close to his own team).
The ball doesn't have to go in straight, but it has to go through the tunnel, not straight to the locks; so if it rolls through, it should emerge in front of the THP's feet, not behind (penalised once yesterday IIRC)

WR has ordered and published, that refs clamp down on it again, yesterday's were particularly agregious, bit they'll soon slip back to ignoring them again. Today's scrums not as bad (still illegal, but much closer) and being let go

Is Sam Simmons the only Exeter player with a sensible haircut?
He's been outstanding on debut....will be interesting to see him against tougher opposition

Think Simmons should have been MOTM personally.

Yeah such a shame we don't have any young talented back rowers at Bath......

Gap in the market - barber shops in Exeter.

Stopping England seems to depend on slowing the ball down so future results might depend on how refs handle that.

Thought Simmonds should have been MoM, refreshing to see a forward running at gaps.

Solid platform from England, just the one line out lost I think.

Would give England no more than 6 out of 10 for that performance.

Was good to see how dangerous AW is when playing in a team with an attack plan.

Just out of interest, over the 80 minutes what exactly was missing? Or are you just being mean spirited?

Simmons played really well. He's in no way an 8 though

Long periods where intensity dropped, too many penalties given away and defensively poor for their tries.

Agreed. Heís like a more dynamic Underhill. Which could cause issues for Underhill.
