Good test for us this. We're on a decent run - albeit it's flaky evidence given that the AWC games tell us little that is relevant to the AV. But we seem to have acquired the ability to hang on to the ball a little more, even if we don't always do anything very startling with it. Not much point making a prediction given how inconsistent we've been, but if Kahn and Freddie can get their second half performance against Saints going a bit earlier in the game, we should be capable of a win. Good to have Zach's footwork and pace to sit alongside the battering options of Garvey and Philips. And our front row should be strong both starting and finishing.

Will be interesting to see how Vuna gets on, hope he has a super Debut!

What's happened to Jack Wilson?

That backline is so patchwork. 5 out of 7 are mid-season signings and one was part of a player swap. Given that, it could be worse.

BO and Humpo you do it on purpose right?
As in wilfully myopic and irritating. That not being enough then why not insult our players?
However to answer in detail -
16, 17, 18 arguably first choice (and have been).
19 - 22 easily good enough and have started occasionally with merit.
Jeff no problem with him bearing mind his misfortune with injuries.
Sorry boys but only ‘shoddiness’ here is in your posts.

Lessons from sid the seagull of all people about making insightful posts, ouch.

No problem with our replacement props or Cook. Charles is in no way first choice. Bayliss and Douglas are good enough you're right. Lewis and Williams aren't.

Just for clarity sake as you appear confused, I never said our bench was full of poor players and i very rarely criticise our players much anyway. What I was actually questioning was the assertion that this was "the strongest bench we've had in a while", because it isn't.

I'd like to see Garvey up his game to the next level. Many aspects are very good but his hands and errors are still preventing him from becoming a great player. He has all the tools, a great engine and a big heart. A little finesse is what he needs.

I see a mixture of proven players, some who should be looking to make an impression and importantly some ball carriers who can get defences on the back foot. That should make ball retention a bit easier.

I am optimistic but you just can't tell this season.

Got to slow it down up there. Up front they'll try to get that narrow offloading game going, which we have struggled to defend against all year. In the backs we need to starve sinoti and goneva of the pill. As ever, we go to win.

Strongest point for me is getting players used to combinations and the ability to read and predict each other in attack and defence. You could see the impact of the umpteenth different side in the first 20 against Falcons and Saints at home but they figured it out and got stronger as it went on. (Yes I know they are professionals with lots of time to train together but that's not the same as game time and our lack of a clear atacking shape makes swapping in and out trickier.) I am hoping this side has enough familiarity (plus an inevitable new face) to hit the ground running. If not we will be in trouble.

Losing is not that big a deal but conceding 3 tries again within half an hour is just so depressing. It has happened so many times this season & we are no where near addressing the issue. After the last two games I had expected yet again that we would be more resilient but clearly that is not the case.

Re: Team's Up!

Was at KP and there were three areas that the Falcons dominated us;

First up tackles; there were a few big hits from each side but the Newcastle players constantly stopped the Bath runners before they broke the gain line. Some of our emplacements started to make some ground later on with Obano and Douglas prominent but before that only Mercer made any decent ground around the fringes. Vuna and Wilson looked lively in attack but we really need to work on our penetration.

Breakdown; Falcons were simply much more committed and physical at the breakdown and were ruthless in turning over any isolated Bath players. We’re rrally missing Louw and rely far to much on Kahn to jackal.

Breaking the gain line; Falcons were patient in building attacking phases and generally every carrier made ground, Bath were extremely lateral in attack and were often driven back in attack by just passing side to side. Flood had a great game and varied his distribution where as Freddie played like a schoolboy 10 either passing as long as he could or kicking without ambition. The Falcons also played with a diamond pattern in attack like we used to so the ball carried always had three options to change the point of attack with a pass or offload.

Overall Falcons looked to be better coached and fitter, for us Vuna looked lively and once he’s down to a ‘fighting weight’ will be a useful addition to the squad. We really need to sign a centre who can truck the ball up and we can recycle quick ball from, when we did play with some zip (once cool came on) we really threatened but were let down by sloppy handling or turnovers. Batty and Mercer were our best forwards and Wilson had a good game apart from one knock on, I hope he will be retained as is big and surprisingly quick.
Carley was as much of a homer as ever and there were several high shots on Taps that went unpunished, also thought Brew’s yellow was a joke.

Please don't blame Carley. Better judges than me have thought to give him international games and, because of his lack of empathy and pomposity and although he is not a players favourite from what I have been told, he was not the cause of our extremely bad allround performance.

Anyway, I was always taught to 'play' the way the ref interprets the laws, and if he (or she now) allows seat belt tackling why don't we do the same. Our lack of forthright, knocking backwards, physical tackles cost us at least 2 tries last night. As all front rows know, you have to work with the ref and his particular interpretations and hopefully get him on side.

Also, we must have Carley 3/4 times a season so should have 'worked' him out by now and hopefully have some sort of dialogue with him on the field. Perhaps we should invite him to a training session or two for his advice and assistance. I sm sure he would enjoy the Spa facilities if nothing else!
