Oh wow! Thought he was off to Ealing.

Good signing, dropped off a little after he tried for the England sevens though imo.

Hasn't Vellacott gone somewhere else?

Vellacott & Simpson swapping clubs.

That's been a massive clearout over the last 2 years at Wasps.
Is there unhappiness following the move to Coventry?
Have the finances not been as expected?
Do the players not like Dai any more?

This would seem like a good swap for Wasps.

Wasps players cross at the lack of delivery on the promise of a new training ground / set up, hence them leaving.

Half moved for a wedge.
Others were getting older and becoming expensive 2nd/3rd string.
1 moved for challenge, whatever that means.

Lots of movement about, Quins and maybe here...happens.

The location is a big difference, Daly is a London boy for starters and Coventry by all accounts is a bit pants

Neither vellacott nor Simpson have been getting a lot of game time recently. Both impressively flashy, but for some reason not impressive to top rugby coaches...

The only thing that I can remember Vellacot doing is getting stepped and then squished by Super Cooper last year.

There has been something a bit fishy about Wasps these past few seasons. They were in terrible financial trouble, then they moved and we were told everything was great and now all of this. Daly, Simpson and Hughes were the epitome of the club but they have moved on. Wasps seem to be lacking a bit of identity at the moment.

Wasps, a club that seems to be getting so much right off the pitch but lacking team cohesion and performance on it ... hmm?

They're not exactly getting it right off the pitch either. I get the feeling their financial state is not as rosy as is often presented. Hence the lack of investment in their training ground.

Victims of the game’s dullest development - the boxie. If this was American Football they’d bring on specialist box-kickers. There’s enough time to bring on a sub even after the ref’s called ‘use it’.

Most of the Wasps players live in Leamington and there are plans afoot to build their new training ground and centre in some of the fields owned by Old Leamingtonians (so the players only have to brace Coventry for the games)

That's why Wigglesworth is worth his weight in gold to Sarries and might play a part for England in the World Cup. You have to be able to box kick with the best of them.

No. No, I reject the term 'boxie'. No.

I thought a few months ago that Wasps as a club, on and off the pitch, were looking a bit How Bath were towards the end of the Ford era. Had form of playing some great rugby on the pitch, some big name signings, get to a final, but everything just didn’t seem right. I now feel that Wasps have gone a step further than what Bath did. Bath management could see that big name signings was not good - squad size was good, and valuing the academy players. Bath have promoted a lot of youngsters up to senior in the last couple years. Some of which are on the England radar. Wasps are losing some core Wasps players - Cipriani, Haskell, the props they had, now Simpson. And they’re just signing more Southern Hemisphere players. We’ll see if it all pays off next season and their strategy is better than Baths. But, based on the Saracens and Exeter models, I would think Bath have chosen the better path.

I'm not sure that is entirely fair cc. A quick check on the wasps website and a large number of their first team squad seem to have been recruited from championship teams, in fact about as many as we have taken from Carnegie

There are a couple of 'big' name southern hemisphere signings on the radar of course but equally there does appear to be some real talent in their senior academy

It's interesting how a couple of big-name signings often appears to end up with a club being 'accused' of only making big-name signings!

Piatu and Beale and WLR differing seasons, so that one 'star signing' per season.
Smith was cover, unattached and not a star at 38.
Eastmond wasn't even a starter.
Lima in Cips out.
Shields wasnt even a NZ intl and hardly a star.

So as far as I can tell, 1 star at FB replacing the other.
1 at 10, one out.

Re: Joe Simpson

My point isn’t about signing stars, or about salary. It’s more about a recruitment strategy, signing big names on a short term basis, and letting players go that were wasps youngsters. They have had a lot of injuries this season, much like Bath have had in previous seasons and I think it’s because the salary cap is used up on a smaller number of players, rather than a larger squad.

I take the point cc and you are right in as much as over the past 3 years or so they have and appear continue to recruit more 'big' signings from southern hemisphere than the likes of Bath. It is just that the majority of their recruitment appears to come from championship sides, again a lot more so than us

It is a fair distinction and you are right that next season should show which is the more successful strategy, I just felt it was a bit harsh to imply they were only interested in stellar recruits

No, definitely don’t think that, and I just don’t think that Dai Young is that sort of DoR either. I just think of what kind of core of Wasps ‘stalwarts’ they could have running through their team.

I am hoping that Bath have turned a corner and are building a very solid base with players that want to play for Bath for years to come, not just a couple years before moving on.
