JP: It would be interesting to know the equivalent figures for the more established Premiership clubs.

Your table does very much illustrate what I think we have known but have not taken the trouble, as you have, to do the research. Simply put, the churn of players over recent years, whilst necessary, has been very much at the expense of continuity.

For me we have two big problems.

1. We recruit 1 or 2 players who do really well and get sniffed off - Williams, Ruskin

2. We recruit lots of players who just don't make the grade and we release them.

These problems will persit until we become a side player choose as 1st choice

The other problem we had was bringing through our own players through the club's youth program, this is improving but will still take several years

We need a bigger core of good premiership players who stay for years and years.

Pennell, Arr, Betty.

Which sort of comes close to my point on the other thread. Which is that overall our players are just not quite good enough, and that's clearly driven by recruitment and retention issues as you say above.

DR was a major step fwd in solving that problem. Until he shoited over us from a great height.

If you add into the mix the variable numbers and different players taking part in the schedule of weekly training sessions? To get any continuity and progress up the table, must be like knitting fog ! Has this season been our worst for that level of disruption and is it why NJ went south to see how teams in the SH deal with it ?

Ecery Prem club has had their worst season for injuries not just us. It is just that we have not coped with it as well as others.

However if you consider we were missing ther following for the Glaws game

Heem
Te'o
Hougaard
Heatcote
Pennell
Annett

Gloucester is a tough place to play even with a full team out.

So, if you applied the Moneyball type approach to this - you select players based on stats and evidence not just a hunch - the issue then becomes whether they will sign for you or not. Whether it is the process of selection which lets us down - and TT and FC are right in what they say about too many of our players being not quite good enough - or that we can identify talented players but cannot get them to sign ( or play well if they do) we end up in the same place year after year.

Our current travails are the same we have had in relegation battles in years gone by - no matter who we sign and where they have been it gets no better. We have had a lot of injuries to a squad who looked goo enough to progress this year - but are our injuries any greater in extent or is it that our back up pool is just not as good?

In the past six weeks we have signed six players until the end of the season, Dowsett and Braid because of injuries in their position. What difference have they made?

NONE so what was the point and a waste of time they are not going to make any difference as to whether we will survive or not.

There is every chance we will already be relegated before Vui is match fit and playing for the 1st XV.

Taufete'e is going to need quite a few weeks before he is ready for the and he might not be ready by the end of the season. Remember another young hooker who has played prem rugby has already been identified as a long term deli-mentioned case - Williams.

Van der Sluys has already been shipped out so he is not going to play a part this season.

Dowsett is not a prem scrumhalf and has had 1 decent game. With Hougaard, Baldwin and Arr coming back he also is not going to push anyone out and save us.

They are all smoke and mirrors to help us survive.

We need someone with massive massive skill in a key position just like Hougaard was.

I still feel we can do it but it won't be the temps that get us there.

The real problem with Dowsett at Gloucester was his kicking from hand. As I said on a previous post I would make sure that just passed back to Mills until it improves!

Dowsett was a necessity as baldwin, arr and hougaard all had long term injuries. This was just completely rotten luck and i feel Dowsett was the best we could get given the situation. Shrewsburyman is bang on, the problem is his box kicking. Bizarrely on saturday mills didnt once kick for touch. All of our touch finders were from shillcock, or dowsetts box kicks which were truly woeful. He made less than 10 yards usually. However i dont blame him or he club, both have had to make do in a difficult situation.

The other signings however, are absolutely bizarre and not needed. Slowik????? Vui?? Braid? Should have saved the money. probably around 150,000- 200,000 in savings right there

Braid was at one time our only 10. Not sure much could be done there either.

Vui looks a good player. Did we know about the injury? Is it very minor, but we wanted it sorted so got the op done?

Van Der Sluys is a strange one though admittedly. Interesting to see if any of them stay after this year.
