I don't know or claim to know anything.
But don't be surprised if he is not re-signed.
I think he will sign, but say never.
He wants to sign, could be there are few takers for 34 year old with the money he wants.
He could also be wanting a lot more as rugby salaries apparently have rise dramatically in the last 2 years.

It seems Wynand wants Morne Steyn to come.

Seems they have been friends since 18 and roomed together for 10 years whilst at the Bulls. That being the case I'm not sure I buy the line that he doesn't know if Steyn is coming or not. Makes me think that there might well be talks ongoing.

Whatever you do, do it safely!

Model professional. Great for the dressing room. Fantastic role model for the youngsters coming through whilst at 34 years old he isn't going to be viewed as a "bed blocker"
Highly intelligent and will make some club an excellent coach if that's how he sees his future.

Now I tend to believe that what appears in the WN has been approved by the club if not actually planted there.

I have absolutely no proof of this - it's just a feeling.

So, if I am right, Olivier wouldn't have said what he is reported to have said without Sixways at the very least approving it.

That is not to say that it means that Steyn is coming.

Mind you, if he does arrive, Sixways will have a very South African accent!

Anything Wynand can do to smack down Morne's alleged Stade eye watering salary would be a great help

Apparently if Morne steyn comes then hougaard could leave as there's an issue with the salary cap. If steyn comes then it would mean reducing hougaards wage. It was debated that it wouldn't matter to hougaard perhaps as steyn is another saffer and friends with Olivier. Apparently the club didn't want to make hougaard unhappy. This is from a close source to the club.

That's what I thought but could be te'o and hougaard already take up the marquee positions. All I've heard is there's an issue being that Francois' wage could be reduced if Steyn signs. Bearing in mind hougaard should be on more than he's actually on he might go if steyn comes

It all seems a bit odd, the other thing that does not make sense to me is why would it have to be FH who it impacts? We have been told we are under the salary cap so could we not recruit in another position and make up the difference with the spare we have in the cap?
Obviously I have no idea of the terms of FH's contract but would the club actually be able to reduce FH's salary is another thought.

Why in the world would we potentially upset Hougaard, who has, arguably, got us out of trouble twice in consecutive seasons and is as close to world class as we've got!

Surely rubbish this...

There are so many ways round the salary cap ask starriest and Wasps.

And it goes up by a cool 1million for next season.

Just on managing a 7 million cap (and 2 marquee players) - by my calculation we have 51 players currently listed in the senior squad.
By comparison Tigers currently have 42.
If, as GG has been reported we are trimming our squad to a more reasonable size, surely that would create room for a couple of "steyn size" salaries ?

Talking of cliques - and going off in an entirely different direction - Will Spencer yesterday in response to a question about the apparent togetherness of the Worcester squad mentioned it was unlike Bath where there were several cliques of players.

I've no views on any potential new player(s) but I do get the impression it is not the margin with the salary cap which might be an issue but the budget which the directors have agreed. There is not a bottomless pit of owners' money.

Southstand,

If we did trim 10 off the headcount, do you think they would yield Morne's salary requirement based on recent Stade data. I get that at circa 160k per man which I see as unlikely depending on leavers. To put into perspective, I understand that when CP was Captain a few seasons back he was on circa 80k.

If the reputed leavers named elsewhere are true and we do yield Steyn's requirements, Agents and players have done very well at the club / our expense to be borderline fringe quality.

Good to consider though.

I completely agree A38, but the rumour Tapngo heard was an issue with the cap, if the issue was the budget available it would make more sense but then to talk about reducing Houghaards salary just baffled me.

Flipflop, Whilst I actually provided the stade data you refer to, I can't actually vouch for its authenticity, given it came by way of the US and the figures, rather than purely salary were looking at a player's worth including things like Sponsorship deals which are a very dark area when it comes to salary caps.

I think we have rather moved on from the years of Penn's 80k and indeed Pat Sanderson's 150k. with the money that has flooded into Premiership Rugby from companies like bt.
In "Agentspeak" "300 is now the new 200"

Just to give you some idea :

Manu Tuilagi 425k
Picamoles 420k
Afoa 390
Mike Brown 320k
Care 320k
Cipriani 310k
North 300k
Ashton 295k
Priestland 290k

These are agent sourced figures and for new negotiations are "last years news"

Obviously these salaries don't compare favourably with what is on offer across the channel but it is becoming glaringly obvious that the french game's financing is unsustainable.

I find this strange, given that we may well not have spent up to the cap this season, and the cap is going up. If we are committed to spend to the cap, which is what we keep being told, there would appear to be a lot of money available. If that still isn't enough to afford Steyn, assuming we are/have been talking to him, then he must want silly money.

The reason for saying we may not have spent up to the cap this season is because at the Message Board evening JO'T did say that although we were budgeted to spend to the cap, there was an international 10-sized chunk of money sitting around, waiting for a suitable candidate.

Now, we may have since spent a significant amount of that on the temporary signings, such as Chris Vui, Joe T, bringing in Ryan Grant early, etc. But that chunk would still be available for next season, with the cap increase too.

Unless the trimming of the squad is not just about quality over quantity, but also signifies a reduction in the rugby budget below cap maxima.

Just out of interest tapngo, how does one qualify to be in the clique ?

Is it based on who you agree/disagree with ? or, something more base like choice of trouser colour ? (Sm14)

Do you think any of our leavers are on your 'Agent' exampled salary's?

I recall the data was net worth stuff, but I also think salary was split out albeit in Euro's

Probably not too many flippy but I think you will find that most squad salaries have increased pro rata since the days of Penn's 80K.

Southstand,

Yeap, I get that CP salary is not indicative, but I'd be disappointed if other than key positions in the front row( and even there with Johnson and Lele if were paying 160k a player to leavers on average. If correct Teo and Hougaard are the only 2 who might get in your list of earners. The likes of Howard, Stelling, Short and similar shouldn't be in excess of CP's old money imo and Biggs and Dowson will have done nicely if in excess of 160k imo.

I guess it will have to wait until an announcement or announcements to see where and who the cuts fall.

Why not cut the squad by 10, save probably close to a million (if not more, cant imagine biggs, vuna and lamb are on peanuts) and be well on our way to cutting those eye watering losses that someone put on here last month.. do we really need 11 players to cover wing? (Slowik, short, biggs, vuna, pennell, adams, howe, humphreys, heem, hougaard, howard)

His wife may also have her own business or source of income in Paris which in the long term is of greater value than his rugby career which could be another reason for not wanting to move.
The other option is for him to do a DOC and commute, there are daily flights between Paris and Birmingham.
