Press Conference Notes

We are now seeing every week notes on the Press Conferences prepared and published by the Club.

Here is the latest example:-

[warriors.co.uk]

Credit I think to the Club which has taken note of the criticism that we were reading news from the WN rather than from the Club itself. This was a point made, I think, at the meeting a few weeks ago.

In turn would it be appropriate if these notes appeared as a "sticky" each week rather than get lost in the general listing? It would be an acknowledgement that we appreciated that the Club was listening.

Excellent idea.

And would save PE having to dig up editorial contributions to keep the site active.

Worcester News [www.worcesternews.co.uk

WORCESTER Warriors face a battle to keep hold of Dean Hammond with Northampton Saints eyeing up a replacement for George North.

Hammond is understood to have attracted interest from Saints after scoring six tries in his last eight appearances for Warriors.

The explosive back joined Worcester’s academy from South Africa's Western Province in September 2013 before establishing himself in the first team.

The 25-year-old has notched 25 tries in 58 outings for the Sixways side and scored a hat-trick in the 45-37 defeat at Harlequins in the Anglo-Welsh Cup earlier this month.

But Hammond’s contract is due to end next summer and Warriors are believed to be facing competition from Northampton for his signature.

Saints are understood to be in the market for a winger after it was announced last week North would be leaving Franklin’s Gardens at the end of this season.

North, who has won 69 caps for his country, will return to Wales on a national dual contract.

Warriors' director of rugby Gary Gold said he was unaware of any possible interest from Northampton.

But he insisted Hammond was among a number of players he had started talks with.

“I don’t know anything about Northampton so I can’t comment about that,” Gold said.

“It’s interesting as you aren’t supposed to be talking to players before the window.

“But the talks are going the same with Dean as they are with every player.

“We will have initial conversations and then we will wait and see what the options are.

“We will give our intentions as to what we want to do with Dean and then let the system take care of itself.

“Dean has obviously played very well to keep Perry Humphreys out of the team as he is a class player.”

Interesting story from the Worcester News. At the moment Adams and Heem are playing too well to be dropped. Dean may fancy a move if he feels he's blocked. However a replacement for George North is a bit strong!

Press Conference Notes

Warriors Head Coach Carl Hogg spoke to the media today ahead of Saturday’s European Challenge Cup game with Oyonnax at Sixways (kick-off 3pm).

Here’s what he had to say:

We were disappointed with the Sale Sharks performance last weekend as we lacked the accuracy we had in previous games.
The Aviva Premiership is relentless and there are no easy games. It’s the best competition in the world.
We must focus on ourselves this weekend.
Oyonnax have held on to possession for the longest period in the Top 14 and they’re also a very physical side so we expect them to play from all over the park.
We will change the group slightly this week and there will be opportunities for guys to put their hands up for Premiership selection.
Kurt Haupt could play while Jamie Shillcock may be fit.
There were a few knocks from the weekend but nothing significant.

There is certainly a lot less content in Carl's press briefing than when GG does it !!
I guess GG has gone home to see the family.

I for one would like to hear some re-assuring comments about recruitment, contracts, new owners etc., even if they were only paying us lip service.............

Don't like reading made up scaremongering headlines in the Worcester News (eg Ryan Mills story). Talk about twisting his words all for a headline !!

Press Conferences Notes

Warriors Head Coach Carl Hogg spoke to the media today ahead of Friday night’s European Challenge Cup clash with Oyonnax at Stade Charles-Mathon.

Here’s what he had to say:

We stuck to task last weekend. We didn’t panic after a slow start and we got our just rewards.

Michael Dowsett and Sam Olver did a fine job of keeping us in the right areas of the field, as did Luke Baldwin when he came on.

It will be a hostile environment in Oyonnax on Friday, as all French grounds are, but we are relishing the challenge.

We will have to step up physically from last weekend.

They have a 3G pitch now so it will be a similar surface to Sixways.

It will be a tough ask to progress to the knockout stages but we will take it week by week and build on each performance.

We need to win this game and we’re focusing on what’s in front of us.

It will be a similar squad but we are waiting on the fitness of Dean Hammond after a knock last weekend.

The group don’t get distracted by things off the field. We all just focus on ourselves.

Saracens was a difficult test but it was some feat to be the first team to score four tries against them in the league this season.

The first-half we played well but they got on top of us in the second period with their excellent kicking game.

Sam Olver, Gareth Milasinovich and Darren Barry stepped up well.

There will be pace and tempo in Friday night’s match against Bath and it will be a physical encounter.

The squad will be largely unchanged.

Will Spencer should be fit for Friday’s game.

Nick Schonert is out for approximately six weeks with an ankle injury.

Jono Lance has returned to Australia while he recovers from a broken hand.

Ben Te’o is due to come back from injury in January.

Press Conference Notes
Backs Coach Sam Vesty spoke to the local media today ahead of Saturday’s Anglo-Welsh Cup clash with Exeter Chiefs at Sixways (kick-off 3pm).

Here’s what he had to say:

European Challenge Cup

We played some nice rugby in the European Challenge Cup but we let some games slip which cost us our place in the quarter-finals.
We have to keep the boys playing so making changes and giving some players time off is key.
It’s a squad game nowadays and the depth of your squad gets tested.
Anglo-Welsh Cup/Exeter Chiefs

We will use the next couple of weeks to give all the squad some game time.
The Anglo-Welsh Cup is an opportunity to play well and get some form going.
Anton Bresler will get an opportunity.
Exeter will be looking to put their brand of rugby on the pitch.
But our focus will be on our own performance and if we can get that right we’re capable of beating them.
Alan Solomons

Bringing in Alan Solomons as Director of Rugby has been a smooth transition.
We’re all about trying to play a balanced game and he has given us some stability.
Injuries

Pierce Phillips will be out for six to ten weeks with an ankle injury.
Perry Humphreys is out for six to ten weeks with an MCL injury.
Michael Dowsett is out for three to four weeks with a hand injury.

Warriors Backs Coach Sam Vesty spoke to the media today ahead of Friday’s Anglo-Welsh Cup game with Dragons at Rodney Parade (kick-off 7.30pm).

Here’s what he had to say:

Anglo-Welsh Cup

We played pretty well against Exeter Chiefs, especially in the second-half. These boys showed they are never going to give up but our performance can still get better.
Qualification depends on other results but we can only concentrate on our game against Dragons. We have to go to Rodney Parade and win.
There will be changes to the side on Friday and the players will give everything they’ve got.
Dragons are a tough side and they will have a never-say-die attitude. It will be a bruising, physical encounter.

Josh Adams
I’m delighted that Josh has been named in the Wales side for their NatWest 6 Nations game with Scotland. He’s put in a lot of work since he moved to Sixways and we’re proud of him.
The players sent Josh a video message after our meeting on Tuesday to wish him the best of luck.

Dean Hammond
Dean is a very good winger and a very good finisher. We have a strong set of wingers and Dean is someone who has always put his hand up when he’s had opportunities.

Wynand Olivier
Wynand Olivier has undergone an operation to a hamstring tendon and will be out for 12-16 weeks.

England Under 20s
The England Under 20s squad has been populated with a lot of Warriors players in the last three years. It’s a testament to the work the Academy staff are doing here.
Young players are the future and it’s only a matter of time until they’re playing first-team rugby for Warriors.

Training Techniques
Worcestershire County Cricket Club players Daryl Mitchell and Ben Cox joined us at Sixways on Tuesday to do some skills work with our backs. It’s important to keep things fresh for our players and change up what they’re doing. It was a really good session and it got the lads thinking.

Director of Rugby Alan Solomons spoke to the media today ( 6 February 2018) ahead of Warriors’ Aviva Premiership trip to Exeter Chiefs on Saturday at Sandy Park (kick-off 2pm).

Here’s what he said:

Anglo-Welsh Cup and young players
The game against Dragons could have gone either way. There were a lot of positives to take from the game with players such as Andrew Kitchener and Tom Dodd impressing, and also schoolboy Ollie Lawrence.
We’ve got some really good youngsters and you can see that from our representation at England age-grade level, and we have to give those youngsters opportunities.
It was also good to get Anton Bresler some gametime and Nick Schonert looked good after returning from injury.

Luke Baldwin
Luke played well on Friday night. He is a bouncy, lively character and a great person around the squad. He is a decent player.

Exeter Chiefs
Exeter are an outstanding club. We have a massive challenge at the weekend.
They are a side built on solid foundations and Rob Baxter is an excellent coach.
They are a model club, they are efficient and well-drilled.

Upcoming block of Premiership games
The whole squad have played over the last few weeks and now we have a key block of games coming up.
It was important a lot of players had some gametime as we haven’t had any A League fixtures and we don’t have any now till March.

Carl Hogg
Hoggy is a terrific guy and a good coach but he feels it’s time for him to move on at the end of the season.
The fact of professional rugby is that people move on and that’s just the nature of the game.

Players returning
Nick Schonert has worked hard to get back from injury while Will Spencer took part in practice today and should be good to go for the weekend.
Bryce Heem returned after a two-week break and said he feels refreshed.
We gave breaks to a lot of guys in January as the season is so attritional and you want to make sure they are in good shape.

Bryce Heem and Jack Singleton
Bryce Heem is under contract. He’s happy here and playing good rugby. Jack Singleton is under contract too.

Director of Rugby Alan Solomons spoke to the press today ahead of Warriors’ Aviva Premiership clash with Gloucester Rugby at Sixways on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Here’s what he had to say:

Exeter Chiefs win
It was a remarkable performance. It was a tense finish but it was a magnificent defensive display both at the breakdown and tackling.
We enjoyed the moment but since Monday’s review, all our focus has been on Gloucester.

Jamie Shillcock
Shilly had a really good game against Exeter. He managed the game well. He is level-headed and mature and it really helped having Francois Hougaard and Ryan Mills by his side.

Gloucester preview
It will be another tough fixture but we’re determined to do well in front of our home support.
There’s the derby element to it and they’ve been travelling well so we expect a good contest.
No doubt there will be more movement than the last game.
We have to perform to the best of our ability to have a chance of getting the result we want, like we’ve done against Northampton, Leicester and Exeter this season.

Cornell du Preez
I know him from his time at the Kings. He had an outstanding first season in Super Rugby, he is a fantastic footballer and is a strong, tough guy.
He has a fantastic skillset, like that of a back, and is relishing the challenge of playing in the Premiership.

Ashley Beck
The Welsh produce some magnificent backs. Ashley is a terrific player.
I’ve come across him in the Pro 14 and he’s a fine footballer with international experience and I’m sure he’ll make a valuable contribution to this team.
He felt he needed a fresh challenge after having
been at Ospreys for a very long time. They are a great club but sometimes people feel it’s the right time for a new challenge.

Callum Black
He has obviously been at Worcester before and to sign a loosehead of the calibre of Callum is great.
He is a fine scrummager and a terrific player.

Marco Mama
Marco is a terrific loose forward and an athlete. We have missed him but hopefully he’ll be back soon.
He has been training incredibly and we expect him back this season.

David Denton
He has been happy at Sixways and that’s been reflected by how well he has played and his international call-up.
He has really improved. But professional sport is like business and you sometimes make the decision to go elsewhere.
We are really fortunate that we’ve been able to pick up a loose forward in Cornell and with Marco extending, we’re certainly not short of players in the back row. We’re in a good position.

Duncan Weir’s proposed loan move
He was recalled by Edinburgh and that’s the situation at present. He trained last week but we’re hopeful he may still come to Sixways. We’d like him here but we’ll have to see what happens.

Injury/team news
Joe Taufete’e is out for approximately eight to ten weeks with an MCL injury sustained while on international duty with USA.
Francois Hougaard picked up an ankle knock but we will make a decision on his fitness later this week.
Will Spencer should be fine for this weekend.
Scotland and Wales players are eligible to return to their clubs for training, so Josh Adams and David Denton are back with us.
Jonny Arr is available for selection after playing for Birmingham Moseley last weekend. He had 40 minutes of rugby as he needed some game time and he came through unscathed.

I think it's something to do with the off weekends not being classed as part of the international window? This means that the unions have to release those players who play for clubs in different countries.

Most of them (bar the French?) have an agreement in place with their respective domestic clubs, which allow them to keep their own players if they want to, so we won't be seeing Teo.

That's how I understand it, anyway, but I might be wrong.

Press Conference Notes
Director of Rugby Alan Solomons spoke to the press today ahead of Sunday’s Aviva Premiership clash with London Irish at the Madejski Stadium (kick-off 1pm).

Here’s what he had to say:

Gloucester performance
Backing up our win over Exeter Chiefs was important.
It was also important to produce a good performance in front of our home fans.
The first-half was a really good balance in both defence and attack. We managed the game well.
The second-half lost a bit of rhythm as lineouts didn’t operate as well as they could have but it was a gritty, determined defensive display which was really pleasing.

Defence
We made 233 tackles against Exeter and another 216 against Gloucester.
The players are taking great pride in their defence and it’s really positive to see.
London Irish

It’s a very big game and it’ll be a challenge. It’s important for both teams.
The nature of the occasion means it’s going to be tough from the off.
They’re a determined team and give a good account of themselves when they play. They were good against Northampton and they have some decent players.
Confidence

Confidence within the camp is certainly boosted after a couple of wins.
But everything is performance-focused and we must continue to try and perform to the best of our ability from week to week.
Alafoti Faosiliva

He had one of his best games for Warriors last weekend.
He is a physical, powerful carrier and in collision you can see his strength and explosiveness.

Isaac Miller
He is a good, young player who’s been starting a lot of games for London Scottish and has a leadership role, having captained them.
He will be an ideal fit at Sixways and he has lots of potential.

Michael Heaney
I watched him for Doncaster Knights a couple of times and he is a really good game manager.
His former club Ulster speak very highly of him.
He has a good head on his shoulders, he has a good understanding of the game and kicks well.

Players making the step up from the Championship
You only have to look as far as players like Darren Barry to see how players can make the move to the Premiership from the Championship and succeed.

2018/19 squad
I’m happy with how things are shaping up. We have strength in depth and a good blend of experience and youth.

Josh Adams
I’m disappointed for him that he hasn’t been selected for Wales but we’re always delighted to have him at Warriors.
He has recently played on two of the biggest stages in world rugby – Twickenham and the Principality Stadium.

Selection/team news
I’m positive that Sam Lewis will be available. He has gone through the return-to-play protocol.
I’m also positive that Francois Hougaard and Will Spencer will be fit for the weekend.
Josh Adams will be available for selection.

Director of Rugby Alan Solomons spoke to the press today ahead of Warriors’ clash with Leicester Tigers at Sixways on Sunday (kick-off 3pm).

Here’s what he had to say:

Reflecting on London Irish and previewing Leicester Tigers
We were flat last weekend and must lift our performance this time around.
Leicester are a tough side and will be buoyed after their win at Saracens last weekend.
They are a physical team and have a very good set-piece and maul.

Jono Lance
Jono is a quality player who knows the set-up well at Sixways.
The squad are all chuffed he is coming back, he is a popular member and will slot back in seamlessly.
He will add to the squad not just on the field but off of it too.
He is strong defensively and can also play at 12.

Gareth Milasinovich
Gareth is a big, strong boy who has developed really well and Mefin Davies, who looks after our scrums, has been particularly impressed with him.
He has come through the system here and done very well.
It is very useful that he can play at both one and three and he is also English-qualified in June.

Josh Adams
Josh is under contract next season. He isn’t going anywhere and he’s very happy here.

Selection news
David Denton and Josh Adams are available for this weekend.
We’ll make a decision on Francois Hougaard later in the week.

Player recruitment and retention
There is plenty of continuity within the squad and I’m very happy with where we are.

Press Conference Notes

Director of Rugby Alan Solomons spoke to the media today and here’s what he had to say:

Injury news
Luke Baldwin is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
Francois Hougaard is on the mend.
Michael Dowsett is fit.
Ryan Mills will see a specialist for his ankle injury.
Sam Lewis should be fine for the Sale Sharks game on Saturday 24 March.

Week off
The players were given a week off last week to recover and they have come back refreshed both mentally and physically.
It has been a tough four weeks where we made over 200 tackles in each of the games.
Some players went away, some stayed at home. It was just important for them to have some time off after an attritional few weeks.

Sale Sharks preview
They will be a massive challenge and are playing well at the moment.
They have strength across the park.

Ben Te’o
Ben has shown he can play at both 12 and 13.
He is a strong, physical and powerful player.

2018/19 coaching set-up
We have an excellent coaching set-up in place for next season with some good personalities so I have no doubt there will be great synergy.
I always thought Neil Doak would become a coach. He has done really well and coached some top players.

Francois Venter
He has leadership qualities and he’s a great player. Everyone I know has positive things to say about him.

Warriors Director of Rugby Alan Solomons spoke to the media on Tuesday afternoon and here’s what he had to say:

Sale Sharks
Sale Sharks have an extremely good record at home so we are expecting a very tough game at the weekend. They are solid all-round and have a number of X Factor players.

Players
The players are in a positive place. They needed a break after the last block of games and, after some time off, they have a real buzz ahead of Saturday’s game.

Coaches
We are very happy with our coaching set-up for next season and we won’t be looking to have any specialist coaches.

Jonny Arr
Jonny is Worcester through and through and to be one game away from 200 appearances for the Club is a remarkable achievement. He is a fantastic club man and a fantastic bloke.

Ben Te’o
Ben is back at Sixways after the NatWest 6 Nations. He hasn’t played as much rugby as some other players this season due to his injury before Christmas so he is fresh and he is a key player for us.

Injury news
Francois Hougaard and Sam Lewis are recovering from injury and we will assess them ahead of our game with Sale Sharks to see if they are fit.

Ryan Mills has suffered a high ankle sprain and it is very unlikely that he will play again this season.

Luke Baldwin has progressed well and, although he won’t play again in this campaign, we hope to see him fit for pre-season training.

Have a read of this weeks press release.
There is an interesting part about squad for next year
"We’ve got strength in depth for next season but there are a few little t’s to cross and i’s to dot."

To me it's clear at least 1 more joining and maybe leaving.
Still believe Te'o Is off, although I am sure someone said Northampton have backed out, & he has stated he isn't with us next year.

Director of Rugby Alan Solomons spoke to the press today. Here’s what he had to say:

Sale performance
It was a disappointing day and we played poorly.
We didn’t react well to turnovers and five of their eight tries came from turnovers.
We weren’t up to the levels required physically and it was a bad day at the office.

Newcastle preview
Newcastle will be another tough test. They are similar to Sale in many ways.
It is an opportunity to put things right and we have got to be better. We need a good performance.

Michael Fatialofa
We needed a suitable replacement with Will Spencer leaving at the end of the season and we were very fortunate to get Michael. I’m delighted he’ll be joining the Club.
There are many players from New Zealand that move to play in the Northern Hemisphere and I’m sure he looks at it as a big challenge.
He won’t be here till after the Mitre 10 Cup which finishes around October, but that’s often the case with players signed from New Zealand and South Africa – they have to finish their Mitre 10 Cup or Currie Cup seasons first and it’s something I’ve been through many times before.
Michael’s a really good player and we’re looking forward to having him here.

Second row options
Andrew Kitchener played well when he came on for 20 minutes last weekend.
We’ve got some really good talent coming through we’ve got Kitch, Justin Clegg and James Scott.
There is good competition for places with Donncha O’Callaghan and Pierce Phillips is back and looked good in the A League game last weekend.
Anton Bresler did a good job coming off the bench in some games but he’s out of the mix at the moment with a calf injury.

Squad for 2018/19 season
We’ve got strength in depth for next season but there are a few little t’s to cross and i’s to dot.
It’ll all be wrapped up by the end of the season.

Injury news
Francois Hougaard has been struggling with an ankle injury and hasn’t trained as he’s still in rehab. It’s a bit early to say whether he’ll be fit for next week’s game.
Chris Pennell is back in full training after a head knock which forced him to miss the last game.
Sam Lewis should be back for next week’s match.
Anton Bresler (calf) isn’t 100 per cent yet so we’ll see how he goes.
Marco Mama got through 25 scheduled minutes for the Cavaliers on Sunday and he’s back in the mix for selection. He’s a very good player and a dynamic, explosive athlete.
Tom Heathcote has been out for a long time with concussion but should be back soon.

Dorian Jones and Grayson Hart
Grayson will know our defensive systems well having worked with Omar Mouneimne while he is an experienced player who will adjust well to our attacking requirements.
We have been a little thin at ten. Dorian became available and it was sensible to take him on.
Both have slotted in and have got good experience. You need that to provide cover.
Both players should be playing in the Premiership Rugby A League match on Monday night.

Francois Hougaard’s new contract
Francois’ re-signing is fantastic for the Club.
He’s had a difficult season with injury but he has been a tremendous player for the Club.

Newcastle preview
They lie in fourth in the table so they will be a tough team to beat.
Newcastle have been built steadily over a period of time. We’re beginning that process here and I’m happy with how it’s going.
They are a good all-round team, they are solid and have had stability and continuity.
Toby Flood is an experienced player and they have attracted others like Sinoti Sinoti and Niki Goneva. Flood is crucial for them, he is a decent game manager and has a good rugby brain. But you can’t focus on one individual, otherwise you lose focus on the team and they have threats all across the park.
They look to play and keep the ball in hand.
We are after a positive reaction. Everyone is focused and we have to be at our best.
The Premiership is a really high standard and whoever you play there are lessons to learn.

Cavaliers win over Sale
It was a terrific display with everyone performing across the board and there were some fantastic tries.
Both sets of half-backs (Grayson Hart and Dorian Jones, Michael Dowsett and Sam Olver) controlled the game well and they did splendidly.
It was terrific to see our young Academy players doing so well and that is positive for the Club. One has to sit down and think about whether they could make selection for the first-team at the weekend. It does show that there is competition for places.

Injury/selection news
A final decision will be made on Francois Hougaard on Thursday.
Marco Mama will be involved at the weekend. I’m happy he’s back as he’ll bring energy to everything he does.
Chris Pennell is fine for the weekend.
Anton Bresler is expected back for the Harlequins game.
Sam Lewis should be fit for the weekend.
Ryan Mills will see a specialist this week but is unlikely to play again this season.
Ben Howard is away with England Sevens in Hong Kong.
Max Stelling is injured (ankle) and unlikely to feature again this season.

Grayson Hart and Dorian Jones
Grayson and Dorian went nicely for the Cavaliers.
Dorian managed the game well, he kicked well from hand and tee, he showed his distribution skills, was brave in defence and looked confident and assured. He has made a good impression in practice too.

Director of Rugby Alan Solomons spoke to the media today ahead of Saturday’s clash with Wasps at the Ricoh Arena.

Here’s what he had to say:

Newcastle performance
The benefits came off the back of the hard work.
We didn’t let the try at half-time affect us. We showed tremendous resolve and character and dominated possession and territory.
The scrum and lineout functioned really well and we contested the lineout well so it was very pleasing.
Both sets of half-backs did well and all replacements made a valuable contribution.

Marco Mama
Marco Mama is a great player with leadership qualities.
It was a really good first hit out for him in his first Premiership game for a long time.

Wasps preview
There are no easy games in the Premiership and Wasps are a quality top-four side.
We have to perform well and I expect there will be a lot of movement in the game.
They play with a lot of pace and width and have some x-factor players.

Injury and selection news
Jackson Willison is fine and fit for the weekend.
Francois Hougaard is coming on leaps and bounds but is not training yet. He will be assessed on Thursday. We will do the right thing by the player.
Ethan Waller should be fit for the weekend.
Ryan Bower played very well against Newcastle. Both he and Ethan are fantastic players. They are very good team men and we are fortunate to have them both at Sixways.

Worcester Cavaliers
It’s great that they’ve finished the season so well with two big wins and it is fantastic for the Club to see these young guys playing so well.

Sam Olver
There is an opportunity for him at Ealing Trailfinders and he is a player that needs to start week in week out. I think the move will be good for his career.

Duncan Weir
I’m really pleased to sign him. He’s familiar with the Club, even though it was for a very short period.
He is very experienced and a good game manager while he can kick well at goal.
You need depth at ten and I think we have it. It’s vital to have strength in depth in a key position.

Goal-kicking next season
Duncan Weir is a good goal-kicker as is Scott van Breda, Jono Lance, Chris Pennell and Jamie Shillcock.
It’s an area that’s very important and we’ll be working hard on it.

Consistency
I believe that the more people play together then the better they play.
It’s good to have a strong thread of consistency.

Ben Te’o
Ben came straight in from the 6 Nations and needed to fit back in and get used to the different combinations.
He will continue to improve as he is a quality player.
It’s great to have him in the side and he is a consummate professional.
I have no doubt he will add value to the team and I look forward to seeing him in action this weekend.
Meanwhile, Ben Te’o confirmed that he will “100 per cent” be at the Club next season.

Harlequins game
We need to improve as we didn’t perform well against Wasps. When you’re playing a team in third-place you have to be on top of your game and we weren’t.
Quins will be a massive game. We must take lessons we’ve learned throughout the season and look at ways to improve.
The important thing is that the game is in our hands. We need a good performance.
Quins are a quality side with lots of Test experience. They are studded with internationals.
There are a merit of reasons to play well. We are at home in front of our fans, Chris Pennell will be making his 200th Club appearance and it will be Donncha O’Callaghan’s final game at the Club. So we want to finish with a win.
Hopefully we can produce a performance that befits the occasion.

Player availability
We are hopeful Francois Hougaard will be available for the Quins game. He will be fully integrated into training next week.
Joe Taufete’e is back and fully integrated within the squad.
Anton Bresler could be back for next week’s game.
Wynand Olivier (hamstring) and Ryan Mills (knee) are out for the season but should be okay for the start of pre-season.
Niall Annett is back in practices but won’t play before the end of the season. He’s looked good but there is no point in risking him.
Perry Humphreys is back in the mix. He is fully integrated back into practices.

Francois Hougaard
Francois told fans that he has retired from international rugby and that is great news for the Club as he’ll obviously be available more.
He is fully focused on Worcester Warriors and is also studying a business course as he prepares for life after the game which is something the Club does brilliantly by giving players dual-career assistance.

Chris Pennell reaching 200 games for Warriors
It’s a phenomenal effort. It is unusual for a player to play so many games for a club and to stay at one club for that length of time.
He is a good, intelligent sportsman and a leader who adds huge value to this Club.
He is a consistent and reliable performer.

Donncha O’Callaghan’s retirement
Donncha has had an unbelievable career. To have played as many Tests as he has is incredible.
He is an intelligent, level-headed bloke and I think he’ll make a success of whatever he turns his hand to.
He has looked after himself professionally and not too many players will be able to play till the age of 39. The collisions are heavier and the game is much faster.
He will want to play in front of his home crowd and pull down the curtain on his career.
He has been a wonderful servant to the game and done great for the Club for the past three seasons.
It’s been a pleasure and a privilege to have coached him.

Andrew Kitchener
It’s been very good to get games under his belt. He is a very good young player.
He has had a tough Academy year but next year is his final one.

Harlequins game
Our destiny is in our own hands. We need a good performance and you won’t get any points unless you perform well.
Chris Pennell will be making his 200th appearance and it’s Donncha’s farewell so we have plenty of incentives.
It can be a great occasion but we must perform well on the day.
Quins have a number of Test players. The calibre of individuals they have is immense so it will be a tough game.

Injury/selection news
Francois Hougaard is back in full training and I’m optimistic he’ll play at the weekend.
Will Spencer has a problem underneath one of his toes where an old fracture has been disturbed. I’m not optimistic that he’ll play this weekend.
Anton Bresler should be back in consideration.
He is back in full training and his wife gave birth to a baby boy this week which is fantastic news so he’s in buoyant spirits.
Niall Annett and Carl Kirwan are involved in aspects of training but won’t be considered for games for the rest of this season. Both should be good to go for the start of pre-season.

Dewald Potgieter
Dewald Potgieter is under contract for next season.
He is off ill at the moment with chicken pox and is injured so he is unavailable and won’t play this season.

Academy
I am very happy with how things are and we will have a nine and ten in the Academy next season.
Keeping Academy players at Sixways is fundamental.
We are also looking to bring in a project tighthead.
The vision for this Club is to build a sustainable Premiership club through a flourishing and vibrant Academy.

Fans
The supporters have been fantastic all season and have been with us through thick and thin. We owe them a big performance.

I think you only get shingles if you have had chicken pox in childhood and is limited to one area. If you've never had chicken pox, you can catch it at any age.

Harlequins performance
It was a fantastic day. The guys performed well and we were the masters of our own destiny.
Donncha O’Callaghan deserved to finish on that note and it was great for Chris Pennell on his 200th appearance. Everyone wanted to perform for them.
We delivered a good performance and it was a great day for all involved.
There was a great crowd and it makes a massive difference to the players and team.

The season as a whole
We’ve played some terrific rugby this season but there has been some inconsistency at times. Consistency is a big work on for next year.
We’ve taken some big scalps such as Exeter Chiefs, Leicester Tigers and Newcastle Falcons. There is that ability there but it’s about consistency of performance.

Northampton Saints
It’ll be a tough game as they’re a good side and we’ll have to be at our best. We’re looking forward to the challenge.
They had a massive win at Leicester Tigers and produced a good performance at Wasps last weekend so they’re in good form.
We have to perform. If we don’t perform we won’t get a result.

Injury/selection news
Bryce Heem took a blow to the throat against Quins and we’ll assess him closer to the weekend.
Dorian Jones is going through the HIA protocol and if he passes that he’ll play.
Will Spencer won’t play as he’s in a boot (toe injury).

Post-season break
The players will get a five-week break after the season.
It is a hard, long season and after Saturday they’ll need those five weeks off.
Any players that play internationals in the summer will have extra time off as it is vital.
Joe Taufete’e is one of those who’ll be away with the USA.

Warriors players knocking on the door for England
I hope to see some in the England squad along with Ben Te’o. The likes of Will Spencer, Nick Schonert and Jack Singleton have been fantastic this season.
Singleton is just 21 and he’s a very good player at the set-piece and around the park. He has a good rugby brain and shows leadership skills.
Sharky (Schonert) has had a terrific season. His scrummaging has been excellent and he’s also been great around the park.
If they do go to South Africa it’ll be a good test as the Springboks will be up for it.
