A rule suggestion from SA

Quote:
South Africa's Varsity Cup competition, contested by the country's top rugby playing universities, is set to trial a 'new innovative rule' in next year's season.

The proposed Power Play system would allow the captains from each team to remove any two nominated backline players from the opposition for a three minute period.

The Power Play must be called while in their own half, can only be used once, and if the team whose players have been removed score a try within the three minute period they would be awarded two extra points (seven points before the conversion).

Chester Williams, former World Cup winner and coach at the University of Western Cape, has given the proposed new rule his full support.

Different.

Seems utterly nonsenscle and is basically a rule to make up for an unimaginative attack

When I were nobbut a lad, there was a comic featuring a character from Wigan called Our Ernie. The strip always ended with Ernie saying the immortal words "Daft, I call it!"

Do away with making a mark rule.

Why? I don't think it would make the game any better, why do you think it would?

The mark is a good thing.

Imposes a high skill requirement on attacking kickers to get the ball as close to the 22 as they can for their chasers to compete for, but not over it.

Do away with the mark and the goal line becomes the target, almost makes it too tempting, wed see far more kick and chase in the hopes of a fumble by defenders, or an easy catch and score. Id rather see running rugby.

Save the mark!, (not that its under any real threat of course).

I think it's a negative tactic, stops an attacking move, and gives yet another opportunity for the play to be stopped. If you were inventing the game now would you naturally introduce it?

Yes I would as it means we see less kicks into the 22 as a result.

I used to hate watching teams that only ever seemed to use up and unders as an attacking move.
