Dean Ryan: Training Young Players to be Leaders

Article in The Times today describes some of what Dean Ryan has been up to at the RFU. He has organised and run camps for young English players with international potential hoping to develop their leadership skills. The camps put the players into non-rugby situations where they would be vulnerable and challenged in all sorts of different ways - including earthquake rescue training and working with difficult children.

The article makes interesting reading but is of course not accessible on The Times website without a subscription.

However one Worcester related paragraph is worth typing out in full:-

"The scheme was designed by Dean Ryan, who joined the RFU as head of international player development in August 2016, having walked out of his role as director of rugby at Worcester Warriors due to a loss of faith in the owners."

I had no particular wish to resurrect the rumours / speculation about why Ryan actually left Worcester - we have all moved on - but the statement is, I suppose, worthy of mention - so I have mentioned it.

I hope the leadership skills he is teaching to the young players include completing their contracts.

This is exactly why DR left I think and given what happened at Gloucester, the understanding when he arrived and how he sees the world was entirely predictable. BB etc should not have been surprised when he left. Surely DR has been proved right that spending the money on signing Priestland was better than spending it on the pitch. That decision showed that he was no longer in control. Sorry to continue this thread but after a long absence decided I needed to comment.

I think anything Dean Ryan says should be taken with a pinch of salt, the lack of regard for him at both Gloucester and Worcester from behind the scenes, players and fans tells its own story.

His record here bears little scrutiny. Relegated, scraped out of Championship and we then only survived with the fortuitous signing of Hougaard which would not have happened without injuries. He then walked leaving us in the lurch and frankly Gold has done a much better job.

Who cares what he thinks.

Can't understand why the RFU wants him . Lost the changing room at Gloucester. Struggled with the senior players at Worcester. Treated loyal supporters at Worcester with contempt. Now there's rumours that he trough his teddy bear out of the pram over the plastic pitch. The Allen's have been good to us. OK they want to sell us now but we're debt free and potentially a good future lies ahead. I see life after Ryan as a blessing.

Dean Ryan is history, and not an especially good one at that.
