Still hearing the name of the project prop mentioned a few weeks ago. Just has yet to be announced.

I believe there are a few key people still on holiday right now so I'd be patient for another week or so.

I remain confused / bemused as to what "project player" means. The name you have heard mentioned will presumably give us a clue as to what it does mean.

The same one mentioned on here a few weeks back - Farai Mudariki.

Project in the traditional sense, huge potential, but a very raw talent.

In fairness, that's exactly the term used to refer to the likes of CJ Stander and Bundee Aki in Ireland.

Could a project player also refer to a positional change e.g. Tom Youngs from Centre to Hooker, Matti Williams from Back Row to Hooker?

I thought a project player is someone with no connection, brought to a country to live and play rugby for a number of years to qualify to play for that country.

So a project player isn't English and takes 5 years now instead of 3 to qualify to play for England.

So a project player is foreign and young?

If they lived and played in England they would qualify on residency?

So Southern Hemisphere probable?

AS meant it in the "raw talent" sense of the word.

Project Schmoject.

Definition imprecise, means different things to different people in different contexts.

Lost interest now.

There's obviously precedents to this so can anyone think of one example of a project player. In any sport?

A number of Olympians have changed sports. Cyclists and rowers seem to do it fairly often. I reckon our last project was the Tomahawk...

All the major Formula One teams have young driver development programs and will speculatively sponsor young drivers through Formula 3, Formula 2 (this is a thing again!) and then F1, if deemed good enough.

I guess that's analogous to A leagues and Anglo Welsh cup.

Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Riccirdo and Max Verstappen are all big names to come from Red Bull

Lewis Hamilton basically invented McLarens - look out for Lando Norris (next big thing) from here.

Charles Le Clerc is from Ferrari.

Many others have fallen by the wayside - Red Bull's notorious for rejecting those that fall even slightly short.

My mates lad at Wasps U16 gone from a 6 to a project loosehead.

As eluded project could =

Young foreign player with aspirations to play international rugby

A sportsman changing sports

A young player changing positions

Very tedious!

A raw talent 'project' player at Worcester many years ago was a young South African guy who played amateur rugby for most of the teams at WRFC. He came over for a season not having a club.He had left college.

4 seasons later he played in the World Cup final for South Africa at 6.Which they won.

Ruben Kruger!

These will know the answer to the question in the title to this thread:-

Not that there's anything much in the article - which has no doubt been volunteered to keep us interested over the summer break (cynical me).

I suppose to an extent both Mike Williams and Nick Schonert could be classed as project players. Both were young with potential and wanted to play international rugby. Be more than happy with another 2 like that!
