I watched the Tigers/Sarries game and wondered how often do players get yellow carded for stopping a try, only for the try to be scored anyway from the resulting penalty. In an attempt to stop one try, Sarries ended up with 13 men and conceded two and nearly lost the game.

Is it sometimes better to hold back and hope that the opposition make a mess of it? Particularly when you are comfortably ahead.

Yes, fair comment.

Itís the red mist v calm thinking.

Sarries must have been watching Wales.

Letís win the game in the first 20 minutes then see how close we can come to throwing it away.

Sometimes you can prevent a certain try by shoulder charging the opposition just short of the try line and get away with only a penalty.

I guess some players just hope to get away with it, and some players do...

The gambit worked for Itoje against SA the other week as I recall. I suppose it depends on how much you trust your team to cope with those situations, even allowing for the fact it's a split second decision.

And yes, Owen Farrell (and the New Zealand team of a few years ago) will tell you sometimes you can ride your luck.

I never understand the obvious pulling down of a maul 1 metre from your line. The referee will always see it, give a penalty try and a yellow card. Surely it's best to allow the 5 points with a kick from the touchline. You get to keep all of your players as well.

Also, if you're the attacking team, wouldn't it be nice to know the referee's intentions when he calls advantage. If you score in the corner you get 5 points. However, the player infringing maybe was going to get a yellow and it's all forgotten about.

If you knew the opposition player was going to get carded would you stop play and take the penalty with the opposition a player down? Maybe, maybe not, but it would be nice to know.
