he Rugby Football Union has softened its opposition to ring-fencing the Premiership, with Nigel Melville, its director of professional rugby, conceding that much will depend on the fortunes of Bristol Bears this season.

Under previous chief executive Ian Ritchie, the RFU steadfastly refused to even consider the idea of scrapping promotion and relegation between the Premiership and the Championship. However, that stance has changed significantly under Ritchie’s successor, Stephen Brown.

Several figures within Premiership Rugby have long agitated for an end to relegation, but the Professional Game Board and then the RFU Council would have to sign off any change to the league structure of English...
