Unless you have already done so, I would heartily recommend you read "50 Golden Years" co-authored by Phil along with ex-Pirates Johnny Thomas and the late Harry Matthews which was pubished in 1995.

There was also a lovely book by the late Ben Batten called "Newlyn, Penzance and the PIRATES" which was published back in 1978 which goes into even more detail about the early days.

I still have my copy of Ben Batten's book. He was my first form master when I went to Humphrey Davy Grammar. Also on the staff was Bob Horne, ex Lancashire fly half.
I well remember Ben Perrin, a Penzance window cleaner typically wearing a white vest in all weathers.
George North's other leisure pursuit was performing in the local amateur operatic society ( where my mother sang in the chorus & my father was stage manager for a number of years.)
