Pirates squad shows a welcome return from injury for prop Marlen Walker but Canadian internationals Matt Evans & Brett Beukeboom are out injured. Hookers Tom Channon and Tom Cowan-Dickie are also missing through injury so Dan Frost continues his loan spell from Taunton.

Only 18 miles to the stadium for me, and guess what — on the blasted sick list again — happened earlier when Pirates played Harpbury — might be 3rd time lucky in March. Hope the pitch is repaired — 10,000 fans invaded it on Wed. when Bristol City beat Manchester United.

Pity we could not get the 4th try— this is the first match in the league a point was not collected— roll on Jersey.

Bristol deserved the win tonight, but what sticks in my throat is the inept refereeing. 2 tries given as a result of forward passes, not reviewed with TMO. Another try given after what was clearly a no arm tackle mid-field which IMO deserved a yellow card. Maddigan was outstanding and clearly a cut above. Bruce Rihana is doing a great job as skills coach.

And one try given after an opposition player was clearly tackled in the air, with play allowed to carry on

AGS, I think that was the same incident that involved the no arm tackle, but you're right our player was also clearly tackled in the air and again no action taken by the referee.

This was always going to be a difficult match away to the league leaders in front of a big crowd. The size and depth of their squad is starting to show. Their squad had last weekend off but for us most of our guys they were playing their 3rd game in 11 days. A season is about more than one game so hopefully our guys can recover in time for a big game at home to Jersey on NYE.

you can feel proud of your lads who gave their all last night but with 10 international in the starting XV it was always going to be mission impossible for you away from home .
Best of luck for the rest of the season and in your quest for the stadium .

Good post Pirate 15. Sometimes it is tough loving the Pirates! I was sat on my own among thousands of Bristol fans who were frankly disappointed by the Pirates.

Our team has built up a fine reputation over the years in places like Bristol, Bedford, Doncaster etc as always going out there and giving it a real lash. Apparently they sold 30% more tickets in advance than for any other game this year and had loved their trip to the Mennaye.

Obviously I missed the commentaries and replays but TV may not have shown the difference before the match even began. The Bristol warm up under Pat Lam was slick and totally concentrated whereas the Pirates looked like they were rather going through the motions. Not surprisingly we then made a complete pig's breakfast of their kick off and conceded seven points before drawing breath and from then on they relaxed, threw the ball around and we spent the next 20 minutes chasing smoke.

We seemed to match them up front and we had a good spell after half time but it was a long drive home.

Yeah sometimes it is tough loving the Pirates so much!

Agreed Steve.
I didn’t manage to watch the match as SKY seem to have sussed out the use of VPNs.
Martin’s commentary was ace as ever assisted by Phil and it just seemed they had too much class on the park.
As you say it’s difficult sometimes being a Pirates supporter for more reasons than just rugby I can assure you.

As for the warm up you may not be aware that not only do they have 5 coaches they also have involve non selected players which increases the intensity.
I am not trying to defend our coaches or our methods.
They will take it on the chin and no doubt take it on board- they do a helluva job.

Don't like to harp on about officials, as it sounds like sour grapes, but three of Bristol's early tries were from forward passes. With our scores just before and just after half time the game would have been much closer if even one of them went our way. The fact that the ref didn't even check them was unbelievable. No doubt Bris would still have won the game comfortably, but they would have been more pragmatic and not had the freedom to show off their undoubted skills quite so much. They should have finished with 14 men after the illegal tackle, which again was not checked properly. We really deserved the bonus point and it's a shame we messed up the line out when we had a big chance to get the fourth try as our rolling maul was causing them a lot of problems.

@RGRE might be worth trying a different VPN. My mate had problems from UAE but I used StrongVPN from Saudi and watched the match. StrongVPN wasn’t expensive. They are getting smarter though, we sometimes can’t watch uk Netflix with vpn. Also seems to depend on device, we were using an iPad not s computer last night.

I expect the ref to get some “feedback” during the debrief. The first try he was unsighted for the pass as far as I could make out. It was the least pass before the try so surely worth a check. But we didn’t lose because of the ref, they were better all round for the 80 mins.

Looking forward to Mennaye NYE now smiling smiley

Good to see on the Championship Message Board that it wasn't only us who thought the officials had a nightmare at Ashton Gate.

And yet, Stalwart, despite all that 'support' on Rolling Maul when someone posts visual evidence that shows your player had his foot on the ground and that the arm is wrapped around there is no one saying 'oh, do you know what, the officials were absolutely spot on. It was actually a perfectly timed legal tackle'. One might even argue that if a card was to be shown it ought to have been to the player who piled in after play had moved on, retaliating for something that didn't need retaliating for. Or even to the one who was shouting in the refs face that he go to the TMO when he has already asked for and received advice from the TMO and the ARs. I might also point out your try no 2 was facilitated by obstruction or what looked like a forward pass in the build up to your try no 3.

On the other hand and from the opposite side of the pitch I thought the pass for our first try was an absolute dead cert forward pass and was certain the officials would chalk it off.

Merry Christmas to you all!

The photo you refer to GL does not prove your view that it was a legal tackle as it could have been taken a split second after the hit while the Pirate was still n the air.

Anyway as most have said Bristol were the better side and deserved to win.

Merrry Christmas.

G-Lensman, nobody can say Bris didn't deserve their win at all, they did and were the better side. BUT had the officials been 'on the ball' your first two tries were facilitated by two blatant forward passes and another when play should have been stopped for 'that' tackle instead of letting play carry on with the ref shouting 'it's been checked' - by whom and when?. If the officials had been as clinical as your team then who knows what might have happened. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and promotion at the end of the season, you deserve to be in the AP. I just hope you avoid the fall again.

Having watched the match live and again on Sky it seemed to me that the ref allowed several 'flat' passes from both sides to go unquestioned - probably an even number on both sides. But it's only those that occur in the build up to a try that make supporters feel hard done by.
And That tackle - watched in slow motion - is perfectly legal. Refs often ask the 4th official to check something whilst play continues. That's what happened here and it was deemed to be legal.
I have a feeling that Dewi's commentary/comments on Sky have coloured the opinion of very many people.

E-Optimistic. Flat passes are one thing and can go either way, it depends on the officials and how they interpret them. BUT even on the replays the first two of yours were blatantly forward, even the SKY commentators remarked on them and replayed them several times to confirm. As for that tackle it was illegal because our player was actually in the air when he made contact. The ref shouted his remark about it being checked within 10 seconds of it happening so even with the smartest of TMOs there is absolutely no way it could have been checked as he said. You deserved to win and did so but when so early in the game you have two tries that should never have been allowed to stand go against you it was clear to me and many of your followers how things were going to pan out. The ref was not up to scratch and and the whole crowd knew it.

Cornishbob - I think we'll have to agree to disagree. The part of the crowd I was sitting in certainly didn't "know it". Where were you sitting?
I saw passes that could have been classed as forward from both sides - unfortunately only one of yours led to a try whereas two of ours did. Whether they were flat or forward is open to interpretation.

I'll await the citing for the tackle and come on here to eat my words if proven. If no citing maybe you will eat yours?

Best of luck for the rest of the season and with the new stadium. And Happy New Year.

E-Optimistic,looks like we will have to agree to disagree, and if the citing goes the way you think you have my apologies now no need to wait (at my great age I tend to forget things these days!!).
Likewise have a great New Year and all the best in the quest for promotion, at least this year there won't be any play-off to worry about (sorry had to get that one in - tee hee). Happy New Year to you and yours.
