HAYES AXED AS RELEGATED COV START CUTTING THEIR CLOTH By Brian Dick,

TOMMY Hayes has been released as Coventry's backs coach following the club's relegation to National One.

Although that demotion is still to be ratified, which should take place at RFU management board on May 26, Hayes has become the first coaching casualty following a season of underachievement.

With the Blue and Whites set to lose around 300,000 in income Cov have moved to cut their cloth accordingly, with the first incision made to Phil Maynard's backroom team.

And as a result, former worcester and Moseley man Hayes, who also played fly-half for the injury hit side, has left Butts Park after a stay of just under two seasons.

"This season has been massively unsuccessful and when you have a season like that heads tend to roll. And that's the case, it doesn's surprise me with the season we've had", the Cook Island international admitted.

"We came out of adminsitration just after the Christmas period and while there was still half a season to go we knew that we were going to be in the relegation group.

"We had our fortune in our own hands, we needed to take control of the season as a management group and a team and I thought we could have turned the club around. But I don't think we quite managed to do that."

A perceived lack of output from the backs was one of the main criticisms levelled at Cov as they stumbled towards disaster but to be fair to Hayes, for most matches his entire backline cost five figures.

Add to that the fact Cov were forced to chop and change in six crucial positions - six players wore the No 10 shirt last term and it is clear why the form of Canadian international Phil Mackenzie was one of the few positives behind the scrum. "We went through a lot of different people at half-back. Nathan Jones was not available to us until late on, although the guys that came in worked really hard and showed great commitment it doesnt help the team when you are having to change a lot." Hayes said.

I wouldnt disagree, buit teh question should also be asked, why were having to chop and change throughout the whole season?

It didnt help that we never bothered to replace Mylo. We lost a decent fly half and didnt replace him.
When you have no one there to boss the backs line the backs will never be any good.

Not sure who signed the players???

The backs line is not just down to the flyhalf to control, There are 5 other players to help read the game and put the team into the correct positions on the pitch to win a game.

I agree for any team to be successful you need a good half back pairing but a flyhalf needs help, just look at Jonny Wilkinson without Will Greenwood!!

Interviewing PM before the start of season he had his playing budget slashed after some player contracts already signed so he had few funds if any to complete his threes.

You dont have to pay big money to get good quailty players. Shaun Perry, Tom Johnson etc etc wernt big money players, just well selected players from lower leagues

It also reinforces my opinion that PM is a forwards-oriented coach, his initial recruitment priorities being confined to the forwards.
tom, just out of interest, any info on who the higher earners were/are ?

depends on what you mean high earners.
previous season it was Mcclone who went for more money at pirates.
One forward who didnt live up to reputation was prob the highest but even then we couldnt compete with what moseley and bedford were offering.

wasn't the figure of 80k a month as the monthly wage bill being bandied about ? If that is accurate, it should have allowed for some decent salaries.

Its not about salaries, its about the right blend and good coaching.

We needed honesty, endeavour and determination. But did we get them....I think not.

The DoR is the culprit he should know the buck stops with him, but he has just made excuses.

Heads will roll, yes, but the not those of the innocent.

It's a bit naive to say that it's not about salaries. Cov were in competition with all the other clubs in the division to obtain the services of the best players; most players will go to the highest bidder. Ofcourse coaching etc is very important, but so is player quality.
