Anglo Welsh Cup Final

So, let's suppose we get to the final. How do you select a team?

Pick your best 15 and they don't, win easily but it's a slightly hollow victory. You have betrayed the spirit of the competition.

Pick a mix of mainly emerging talent, but they have a much stronger balance and you lose. Feel a bit bitter. The trophy is again undervalued. What to do?

This a serious suggestion which enables both teams to pick their best available team and go for it. Winning means something. It requires two men of honour and we obviously have a beacon in Rob.

So each coach sends the other coach a list of all their fit players.

In turn, each coach deselects a player from the other squad as follows:

2 front row (only 1 hooker)
1 second row
1 back row
1 half back( maybe one of each)
1 centre
2 back three

These players can't be selected and can't magically cover an injury in the warm up.

Both teams then have a clear matched selection and the contest becomes a real contest. This can be arranged by just two people.

I really believe that two honourable forward thinking people could make this happen.

Why not. It's a win win.

Because the AW is treated as a different thing by different clubs. Some want to bring on the youth only, others youth and fringe players or those returning from injury. Others to ingrain team moves in any of the previous mixes and some would just desperately hope to win some silverware for the whole club including supporters.

How would you feel if you were one of the players deselected. I'm sure coaches and physios have a mid-term strategy for selection. By being deselected a players match fitness could have an impact on being selected for the League games. A great example of an injury returnee is Dave Dennis. Potentially a rival club who was competing with us in the league would be very keen on denying Dave game time and deselecting him for the league reason only.

Our squad for Sunday shows youth, a recent signing, fringe players and experienced players with one who is hanging up his boots at the end of the season.

Until a meaningful A league or a defined and structured cup competition is introduced all of the previous approaches are valid IMHO.

Fair play to you for your idea but for me? No.

We have over 20 players injured or on international duty, the 23 will largely be the same as last night (with no Cook at 9 who was injured) as we have no other players left. Good luck for Sunday.

Bath v Chiefs in a final at Castle Grim certainly has a gritty, sharp-edged feel about it!

Bath's win over Saints was played in such appalling conditions no form of either side can be deducted. Well done Bath.

Bath will have no problems of conscience picking a team.

With a sick list of more than 20 they can only just manage 15+8 for any match!

One clause I would have for the cup is only players that have made an appearance in a group game would be eligible to play in the semi finals and finals
