Ben Moon in England Squad

As reported in the Offy, Ben Moon has been called up to replace Joe Marler in the England training squad in Bristol.
Great news for Ben but still no place for the Don. Both are stalwarts of the club who perform for us week in and week out.

This is great news - a reward for consistency and for getting on with the job without fuss. Id rather have him in the team than Marler any day. I think Ben did play in England age group teams?

Lets hope he gets the reward he deserves with a full cap now. Ben is certainly one of our unsung heroes from the championship days.

I think this demonstrates exactly why Don and Alec are not fixtures. EJ wants the best fit specialist in the country in each position. Ben is currently that along with Jack Henry and sometimes Luke. Don and Alec are versatile. They pop up everywhere. Great for us as a club. We win 95% as a result. We come up short against Leinster and Saracens. Teams full of specialists. It is what Stuart Barnes was trying to say clumsily last year. Our game wins against all but the toughest opposition. It is not a game that can win the world cup which is traditionally been the focus. Where EJ suffers is that a team that has the best English specialist in each position is not good enough to beat Ireland let alone NZ at the moment. So do we try the Exeter way? No. We try to make each position the best in the World. That worked in 2003. Jonny Matt Will and Jason, Lol and Niel were the best in the world by far. That is the way forward. Exeter can deliver them from the academy given time.

Congratulations Ben not unlike TJ a club man with England ability. Good luck. No one can ever take away his great achievements.
Separate issue - could someone explain why our other loose head Hepburn just drops off the radar and Ben suddenly appears?
Not sure I buy the specialist theory....Farrell 10 or 12 Itoje 4 or 6.... Etc etc
Random Jones I'm afraid....

I thought exactly the same regarding Heppers. Maybe his scrummaging has held him back although I think the emphasis on quicker scrums so more ball in play time and his work around the pitch gives him the edge. He is basically an extra flanker.
I still have this cynical thought that Jones gives players caps (or Saxons caps ) that he doesn't really have plans for to make them ineligible for other countries. Don for SA,Mitch with Australia,Heppers for Australia etc etc......

It's a training squad, not a selection for the next game. That's why there's not much point reading into it who's selected and who's not.
