20 February, 2018 09:22
After last weeks results, London Welsh could gain promotion if we win our next home fixture against Bank of England on Saturday the 3rd of March. Please come and support.

We are also hosting a pre match lunch for members (and guests) with some very special guests and by popular demand the London Borough Choir will again be providing some entertainment.

Tickets are available here:

Could the LW Womens side be potentially promoted the same weekend?

Wow! Not that would be something. I was thinking on a similar line about both teams not only being promoted but Champions as well. C'MON YOU WELSH PADDYTAF.

Regarding the womens side and promotion. I was told the other night that if they win away at Portsmouthin a couple of weeks they then go into a playoff match against another region of the same step. It was however suggested that the region they are in is a lot higher standard than many of the others so that playoff match (2nd weekend in Apr I believe) should be fairly easy for them.

Same for Guildford Gazelles who are in the league above. They are currently 2nd in their league with Teddington away then Reading Abbey away, both difficult games, but if they can win both they could be top. They just beat Drybrook (Forest Of Dean Team) last week at home 70 points to 14 scoring 12 tries in the process. Whatever happens like our lovely LONDON WELSH Ladies they have had a very good season. C'MON YOU WELSH LADIES PADDYTAF.

UPDATE :

1. Members lunch is now sold out. WRU Chief Executive and The London Borough Choir proving a big draw (160 places sold).

2. 1st XV can guarantee promotion if they can get the win.

3. Tyrone Pelasio and Ben Francis although suffering serious injury against Wasps are doing well. These two players top our try scoring charts so will be sorely missed for the rest of the season. Centre Ben will be out for the rest of the season with a broken ankle. No 8 Tyrone suffered some nerve damage but is back up and walking. Thanks to the Voyagers charity for helping our players.

4. We will be looking to put 4 senior men's teams out this weekend (Druids 2nd XV, home on Sat, Occasionals (3rd XV) away on Sat, and Griffins (under 23 play on Sunday).

5. Please wrap up warm and bring all support you can.

Weather not looking good for Saturday. Snow and freezing temps. Ground must be quite hard already. What happens if the game gets cancelled (rearranged? If not what is the points allocation, if any)?

Will the play/No play decision be taken Saturday morning? Should we ALL take our old electric blankets/bales of straw/plastic sheeting down to ODP or Thursday? 😂

Decision will be taken on Saturday morning by the groundsman and team management with view to players safety. I believe the St David's day lunch will go ahead anyway. Unfortunately ODP does not have covers or heaters!!

Fingers crossed! Saturday heralds the return of slightly warmer weather in the forecast + 4 by noon hopefully. Hope it’s enough to thaw whatever Mother Nature chucks at us.

What time does the lunch start?

Not quite that simple unfortunately!

Any decisions need to be made in conjunction with the League Secretary and he advises on when the call should be made. It's a three way discussion between the teams and the League Sec - this has already started and will continue during the week.

Perhaps I'm wrong but I thought Tom Shanklin was one of our guests this Saturday, or indeed guest of honour on Saturday?? Weather permitting I'm in Threadneedle Street on Friday for a City Lunch (Guildford Rugby Club do) where Flats (David Flatman)is the guest speaker who is Tom Shanklin's partner in crime on Channel Five for the Anglo Welsh Cup tournament. PADDYTAF.

Richmond have posted the following (taken from a bigger article) about
their match on Saturday game at RAG:

“Pitch inspection

However as you will appreciate given the wintery conditions currently out there, and the forecast for the next couple of days, these games are very much in doubt
An official pitch inspection will therefore take place at 7.45am on Saturday morning and the result will be advised through the website and other club social media channels so please do keep tuned in.”

Thaw forecast to get temperatures above freezing by midnight Friday ... showing + 5 at 1500 Saturday.
Any rain however can sometimes turn to ice ,initially , on cold soaked ground. ( or train tracks, aircraft wings etc)

One of the many nuances and vagaries of our British weather!

“Update: it seems @LondonWelshRFC may have managed to move the @principalitysta roof to Old Dear Park... game still on... even their @Champrugby cousins across the road @RichmondFC1861 have postponed, we could be on to be the only game played in the UK tomorrow, stay ready! #Rugby”

It's different when the opposition players and supporters are having to set off either the day before or early on the morning of the match - or if they have to travel on railways and motorways that are closed. We could have a pitch inspection at 12:30 tomorrow and then the Bank team could set off on foot and still be at ODP in time for the pre-match warm-up.
