It was a decent run-out, and the coaches used the game to try out a lot of the newcomers. I think I recognised about six or seven players from last season - Lloyd, Courtney, Marc Weir, Alex Laybourne, Ollie Smart, Fred White and possibly Gareth Morgan. Staines only have lights on the back pitch, but it was still too dry following the heatwave, so they hired temporary lights on the main pitch. The problem was that they weren't quite high enough to illuminate the middle of the pitch, so there was a long strip where play wasn't visible from the touchlines. As such, it's hard to say who really stood out, because it was almost impossible to identify individuals. Final score 38-7, which possibly reflects the territory that we enjoyed if not the possession, of which Staines had their fair share.

I bumped into one of the players in the pub yesterday, and he felt that it had been a decent performance. Unfortunately there was another injury in the back row, looked liked a dislocated shoulder to my untrained eye, and I understand that we played the last 20 minutes at Caldicot with only 14 men due to injuries, but hopefully we have a bigger squad and greater depth than many of our rivals.
