The news about Hayman is sadly not a surprise. Until or unless there is a change of ownership and management, the Falcons will continue their slow motion, car crash decline into anonymity. In yesterday's article on the "Offy" Mr Thompson declares how important the fans support is and if we will only buy our next season ticket before the end of April we will get 10% off Spag Bog or some such nonsense....except on match days.
He cannot be serious!!
It really is a shame that a fine club with much potential and thousands of absent but still loyal fans is being so mis-managed. As an exiled Northumbrian I could easily get to Northampton,Saracens,Wasps,Quins or Irish, but I only go when the Falcons visit. Otherwise I listen to all home games on the web, because the Falcons are and always will be my team.
I'd gladly get a season ticket for 2010/11 though it costs north of Ł100 to get to each match,if there was the slightest sign that the owner has any ambition or the coaches any plan. Meantime, with a growing sense of despair,I'll have to stick to Radio Newcastle and the local Italian.

does someone have a decent sauce? or is it just hope?

One of the rumours, possibly involved in the Twist, was that Davy had gone on a one year contract, with an additional one year option, so that when Carl left, it would leave Davy with the opt out to leave Bath & come home.

Re: Hayman gone
Posted by: TouchLine (IP Logged)
Date: 20 March, 2010 13:04

Why would he want to come back?

He's in the England Squad now and it's a lot easier getting to England sessions from Bath than it is from up here. He's much more likely to be playing HC rugby there tan at Kp and I can't believe we'd offer enough to significantly improve his current salary even if no other clubs were after him which is unlikely.

Re: Hayman gone
Posted by: Way out west (IP Logged)

Not a surprise and I don't think anyone can blame him for choosing big money and the south of France. I would have been more disappointed if he had gone to another English club as was being mentioned a few weeks ago.

It's been a pleasure and privilege being able to watch him play for the last couple of years. Up there with Inga, Pat Lam (first spell) and Burke as the best overseas player we have had. Would add Gary armstrong if he ca be counted as a foreigner.

Davey Wilson will be a Bath player next season. FACT.

Re: Hayman gone
Posted by: DGNTR (IP Logged)
Date: 20 March, 2010 13:31

This is for the best.

Falcons cannot afford to pay players Ł0.5m a year, FACT.

They'd be better off concentrating their efforts on assembling a value for money squad that can get us back into the premiership at the first attempt next season.

An all North East front row sounds great to me
Davey might fancy coming home, Bath the city might not be to his fancy and comfort might be more important that cash
We could do alot worse than Davey coming back
but I dont hold much hope

A strong rumour is the ex London Irish Tongan international prop Tonga Leaaetoa who currently plays for Toulon.Falcons are rumoured to have asked about his availability. He mainly plays from the bench and is 33 this month.Would imagine he is on a decent salary if he is still under contract. Not a good exchange for Carl.

I think what he says is what he wants to happen. Unfortunately he doesn't have the wedge to make it happen.

If only he'd get realistic about what the Club is worth as John all did and let someone buy it who can afford to invest properly. The longer he's running things it seems the lower the value of the Club is going to be/
It's certainly worth considerably less now than when he officially put it up for sale a while ago.

I dont believe Dave Thompson has done anything wrong! At the end of the day the Premiership has a salary cap and giving Hayman 1/6th of it does not make no sense, when you could proberly bring in 3 or 4 players for that money.

I believe if Toulon did not offer him this contract he would of still left for New Zealand.

Re: Hayman gone

A quote from Birdie back in November. DGNTR was posting categoric statements on Hayman's return to NZ at the time when Birdie produced his 'Hat Deal' quoted below

'DG if Hayman goes back to NZ straight after Falcons I'll eat your hat. If not you can only post positive posts on this site for a year..Is that a deal..'

I can imagine the response I'm going to get but now is the time to stand up and be counted. Therefore look forward to positive posts for next 12 months as DGNTR's cloak has slipped recently and it would be nice if the Ł100 charity bet was fulfilled as well. Over to DGNTR and Birdie!

PS Now is probably the time to realise that IMO Birdie will always be closer to the 'sauces' than DGNTR

Re: Hayman gone

Thanks Getitright and although some people think or thought i was Thumper jnr i am not but am close to certain people, sauces.

When Thumper talked about keeping Hayman if i am right i think they offered him a long term deal with a player coach option stuck on the end and what i heard Hayman was very interested in bit IMO no GP club can compete with the big french clubs salary capabilities.

Re: Hayman gone
Posted by: DGNTR (IP Logged)

Incorrect Birdie.

Hayman wanted a player/coach deal but the club could not accomodate his wishes wo
owing to the contractual constraints of already having a coaching team in place.

You need a better sauce mate.

"I would like to thank the club for being so professional in the way they have allowed me the time to make my decision, my team mates for the manner in which they have welcomed me and the Falcons fans for the affection they have always shown during my time at the club.

"Most importantly I would like to stress that I remain absolutely committed to the Falcons until the end of the current season, both in terms of securing our Guinness Premiership position and then also our dream of achieving a Heineken Cup place for next season. My focus will not waiver from those targets at all between now and the summer, and everybody at the club is pulling together enormously to ensure a strong finish to the campaign."

Absolutely top bloke. He will leave a lasting legacy, a group of forwards who have seen how it should be done. For that alone he deserves our appreciation.

I also think that the opposition looseheads in the remaining matches may find they have something to remember him by also.

No quarrel with Hayman's effort and performance while here, and he will be crucial to our fate in the next few games. But Thumper and Bates don't come out of this looking good. To lose one good TH prop is bad, to lose two... They should have realised they were unlikely to be able to re-sign Hayman and moved him on last year and kept Wilson.

Re: Hayman gone - IT'S OFFICIAL

Hayman has certainly helped revolutionised our forwards and hopefully his replacement will help continue that. I'm sure he doesn't want to be remembered as the captain under whom we were relegated so as Touchy says he should be well up for it in the last few games.

Can't see how you come up with that Alas, simply beyond belief that Wilson would have stayed at KP twiddling his thumbs on the off chance that CH would up sticks in a year's time.

That's precisely my point. The only way to keep Wilson was to offer Hayman to other clubs last year. The size of his contract would not have been a barrier given what Toulon are reportedly paying him. Better to have Wilson for 5 or 6 years than Hayman for one. Plus the difference in salary could have been used to strengthen the squad elsewhere.

I didn't realise that those were the only two options available last year, please excuse my ignorance.

If Hayman had gone & Wilson stayed, both Wilson & our pack would have gone backwards this season. He is still a young lad learning the trade, and who exactly do you propose he would have leaned from over the last 12 months? Micky Ward?

I'm trying to imagine the outcry on this board if the club had let Hayman go last year. Thumper and the club in general would have been slated morning, noon and night for allowing it to happen. Especially with all the other experience that left at the end of last season.

And if Wilson had stayed, he would have been missing for large parts of the season and presumably the next several also.

The extra year of Hayman with a good quality replacement who is available all season seems the better option to me

I love it when people make comments about signing a benchwarmer - we've signed some bloody good ones in Amesbury Hudson, Tulip and even Matt Burke was or could have even been classed as a reject. Its not always as easy as whether they start or not and more so why they arent or who is keeping them out.

Aslong as we dont get Tonga Leaaetoa, he is 33 years old and doesnt play a full game for Toulon.
A good prop in the past but too old for the falcons.
We need a 25-29 year old quality proven prop, international or not.

Just as a matter of record, Tonga has started more games than he has benched for Toulon this season.

Not to say that he is or isn't coming here, but just adding a factual slant to the debate as many seemed to be under the mistaken impression that he was on the bench more often than starting.

He's made 17 appearances for Toulon this season, and started in the majority of those.

DG,

The info is freely available on various websites, eg: lnr.fr, eurosport.fr , statsbunker, ercrugby.com .

I simply saw the thread on here calling him ill-informed names such as "bench warmer" and read claims saying that he was a replacement more often than not.

I suspected it was wrong and that he had in fact started the majority of his 17 games for Toulon this season. I checked the stats and, lo and behold, I was correct.

This probably has 1 game to add but Tonga starts 8 and 13 on the bench, silly point but it shows most of the games he has been benched as the newspaper who printed that we were enquiring about him statedTongas game by game minutes on pitch

Don't feel like reading the whole thread, but wanted to wish Hayman best of luck next year and thank him for his valuable service to Newcastle. Must admit...was hoping to see him in the all-blacks jersey next year. Maybe NZ will change the rule.

DG,

I'm not hell bent on defending anyone, I just don't think it's especially fair to label a player as a 'bench warmer' when he has started more games than he has benched, as the stats show.

Pityacker, the stats clearly say he has played 17 games, of which he has started nine. I've even added the links so you can check them.

That's not to say he is or isn't coming here, but I'm just getting across the accurate stats so that any criticism on here is based on fact rather than misunderstanding.

Cheers
Smithy

Pityacker's version is a lot more accurate than Smithy's. If you look at Toulon’s league games this season Davit Kubriashvili has started 16 games, been on the bench for 4. Tonga Laa'aetoa has started 5 games had been on the bench for 12. He has not started any of the last five league games. On the rare occasions he starts he gets replaced early in the second half. Kubriashvili is obviously Toulon’s starting tight head, Laa'aetoa the bench player.

In all competitions he has played 17 games, and started nine of those.

That's all I said.

Look, I'm not the guy's agent, so I'll just leave it there. I just thought it was a tad unfair to label the guy as a 'bench warmer' when he has started in the majority of his 17 appearances this season.

Cheers
Smithy

So when he does sign for us?

So in fact he has started 52.9% and been on the bench for 47.1% (roughly). Roughly a 50% bench warmer then.. Who would that equate to in our club? Without looking it up I reckon Bobo is about there or there abouts.

I am sure that Barf felt the same about signing a certain bench warmer called Wilson.

Out of context all these stats are pointless, and there is no indication that he is even being considered for the Falcons anyway so it is all a bit nonsensical.

Good word that.

Bobz has started 17 and benched 9 games this season for us.

Find it funny how everyone has there opinion on this nfella and really not ever seen him play for at least a year. If he does come or who ever the club does sign why do we not wait and make an opinion of him after a few games in our colours.

Fair point Birdie, but the fact that this fella is 33 does not bode well if he is Carl's replacement, that's all.

I am confused, where did anybody get the idea that this bloke is heading to KP anyway? Sounds to me like the silly season just got sillier.

It was first reported in the rugby times.
