Some exciting partnerships in those two line ups such as Socino/Mermoz, Sinoti/Radwan/Cowell, Hogg/Uzokwe/Burrows, Witty/Young.

Just wondering about some of the players who have been left out. I understand about the Pacific Islanders who have been on international duty and that all players can't be picked but but what about the likes of the Wilson props (they've been in pre season training), Tait (haven't seen anything of him), DTH (how long will he be out for?), Graham etc.

Re: Teams for Pre Season games Nottingham/Doncaster

Seems we have a couple of front row forwards in on trial.

Diogo Ferreira - Portuguese tighthead Prop most recently with Sale Sharks.

Jack Payne - is an Australian-born, Welsh-qualified rugby union player. He currently plays for the Western Sydney Rams in the National Rugby Championship (Australian feeder Tier below Super Rugby)

Payne previously played for the Scarlets in Wales He also previously represented the Australia U20s rugby team. He plays at flanker or lock, and has even made some appearances at tighthead prop.

Payne made his debut for the Scarlets regional team in 2014.

(Edited as ive now found out Ferreira is a tighthead)

So no:

Jon Welsh
Davy Wilson
Scott Wilson
Sean Robinson
Will Welch
Tane Takalua
Michael Young
Niki Goneva
Alex Tait
DTH
Zach Kibirige

And probably others I've missed

Hope not too many are injured..... and just being rested for the bigger games

Some potential not on the pitch.

i dont know where to start, im genuinely excited by these sides...I cant wait for tomorrow, as Norfolk rightly says some great combinations to look for..we have pace and power galore!

The impressive thing is that some of the settled, set in stone players like Mark Wilson, Will Welch, Sinotti, Calum Green etc etc will now have some serious competiion to keep them motivated, whilst allowing Dean to rest fatigued players knowing he has similar standard players replacing.

Cant wait to see the new signings....but Ill be watching the younger lads closely...like Witty, Uzokwe, Radwan, Chick, Trevor Daivson etc...

Actually its interesting that Davison is playing at TH as I thought he was a LH. Regardless he has been getting huge praise for his performances last season, supposedly as strong as a tank! Have we finally got another good prop coming through.

And Uzokwe has been getting numerous plaudits.

Will be interesting to see which midfield works best. Hopefully, at least a couple of the tightheads will turn up in the following two weeks.

Strange that Scottie, Davy, Welsh all missing
Doesn't bode well for the TH stocks
Extended breaks for the like of Takalua, Olmstead, Goneva as expected
Looking forward to the games tomorrow, fingers crossed the weather holds out
Any surprise shirt launch tomorrow?

Re: Teams for Pre Season games Nottingham/Doncaster

Re: Teams for Pre Season games Nottingham/Doncaster
Monkey1 11 August, 2017 12:41
Expect all sorts of changes, the team lists often end up being pretty meaningless for these games. The management will have a huge list of things they want to try out tomorrow in real game situations, expect chaos.

I remember a pre-season game a couple of years ago where we all lost track of who was on the pitch at any one time, not helped by a lack of shirt numbers, and probably not helped by a few pints. It was great fun.

Shows our strength in depth now with all those out yet look at the strength of those two squads.

True, but they are hardly premiership prospects in the short-term. The Falcons need one of the Wilsons to be fully fit to share the load with Welsh.

Re: Teams for Pre Season games Nottingham/Doncaster

That Jack payne is a big lad at tight head for us. He's done alright.

Matavesi looks a bit too heavy for my liking... A bit more fitness work to do but still did has done ok.

Re: Teams for Pre Season games Nottingham/Doncaster
Geordie 12 August, 2017 14:24
Matavesi went off through the first half and his thigh was heavily wrapped...possibly not been training due to injury.

Re: Teams for Pre Season games Nottingham/Doncaster
Geordie 12 August, 2017 17:43
Some decent individual performances, some not so...but not a day to really judge performances.

However one thing.....Toby flood looked a step above.... Time, composure, quality.

I think the most important question raised today is......

Did anyone manage to get served at that posh burger van?

Re: Teams for Pre Season games Nottingham/Doncaster
Monkey1 12 August, 2017 18:16
I could have done some good trade at the fish & chip van today but it wasn't there. Was tempted by the burgers for no more than a second or two, but burgers are not really my thing.

Osric 12 August, 2017 18:48
Toby Flood the stand out of the new boys. An enjoyable afternoon. We're stronger than we were last season and will offer greater composure. Really looking forward to the season ahead.

So good to see Noah back at KP in a Falcons shirt.

Re: Teams for Pre Season games Nottingham/Doncaster
pityacker 12 August, 2017 19:40
Can only agree with what's been said some decent showings for first run out with a certain Toby Flood oozing class and quality making everything look easy , was at his first league game at KP and it was great to see him back and on that showing the years have been good to him.

I did..... it took a while..... but it was worth it.....

I went for the Beast...... a monumental and quality double burger. Yes, it was £8.50, but compared to other prices at KP it was good. 2 large burgers, 2 bacon, 2 cheese, lettuce, salsa, onion and jalapenos..... Man v Food!

And no, I'm not on commission - an occasional treat but overall a much better than 'normal burger'

Anybody who stood out today then a part from Flood?. smiling smiley

Re: Teams for Pre Season games Nottingham/Doncaster
Cumbrian_falcon 12 August, 2017 21:16
Impressed by a lot of the new signings.

Mavinga - looks a solid unit good scrummaging and took his try well.

Flood - oozes class the offload to Mermoz gor JP try was sublime.

Mermoz -looked nonchalant then quick as a flash puts the pace on and he's away a silky player.

Burrows - I was very impressed with lots of dirty work and some good go forward.

Matavesi - looked good on the ball and a solid centre not on long enough unfortunately.

Stuart - Looks a decent Scrum-Half.

Jack Payne- very impressed with this lad today playing at tight head would like to see him around for a lot longer.

Of the established players Sinoti played very well. JPS looked back to his best and Chris Harris played well too.

Dawson the young scrum-half deserves a mention too.

Re: Teams for Pre Season games Nottingham/Doncaster

Sinoti showed some wheels for his score. I thought he looked sharper in straight line speed terms than he did last season. He had less strapping on his knee than last year too; there may well be a direct correlation there.
Keep it up big man.

Re: Teams for Pre Season games Nottingham/Doncaster
DB23 12 August, 2017 22:49
A good blow out for both Falcons' teams against real opposition rather than training games, with a good mix of experienced and younger players.

There were also a number of our top players, like Goneva and Takalua who weren't in either squad today. This bodes well for this season and beyond.
I can't remember previously having the depth of quality in the squad that we have currently and with some very good young players coming through.

Not judging anyone's performance after a first run out but worth mentioning that Sinoti and Latu both looked fit and sharp after their injury-affected seasons last term.

Re: Teams for Pre Season games Nottingham/Doncaster
pa8 12 August, 2017 23:02
Looking forward to the real stuff starting and seeing Flood, JPS and Mermoz in midfield. Was impressed with Mermoz today, he looks like he can be that class we need at centre. Was constantly talking to his wingers today, Sinotl and Goneva must be really looking forward to playing outside him.

Latu was excellent. Thought all the new props had a good run out. Bodes well.

Thought returning Noah was a class act. Accurate with hand and foot, experience shown in the way he controlled proceedings doing the right things in the right places at the right times. Joel Hall looked assured and Craig W also impressed.
Given that our lads were not going to risk injury by giving it the full welly, I was pleased with what I saw.

Was Matavesi forced off?

All comments bode well moving forward and it goes to show the depth of our squad to convincing beat 2 Championship teams with 2 different teams.

Re: Teams for Pre Season games Nottingham/Doncaster
Geordie 13 August, 2017 09:58
I also thought the,two young wingers looked good...Radwan and Stevenson.

And Simon Uzowke is a monstrous unit at flanker. Burrows looks like he's the heir to All hogg.. At 8

But dare I say Joel didn't look sharp.

Matavesi limped off indicating a problem with his knee that was heavily strapped. On videos from Ospreys games he also had that knee strapped so obviously a long term need. After the game he passed us limping slightly with a new smaller strapping on his knee , hope its not too bad.
On reflection he looks pretty heavy and carrying a bit surplus.

Re: Teams for Pre Season games Nottingham/Doncaster
alas 13 August, 2017 10:19
No point being montrously powerful if, like Fonua, you knock-on or lose the ball in contact a lot of the time. Expect the starting back row and relacements will come from Wilson, Welch, Latu, Hogg, Chick and Burrows. Joel made some good individual breaks, but his passing wasn't as good as usual. The extra length and accuracy of Flood's kicking from hand was very evident. By the time Worcester comes along the Falcons will have to stop giving away unnecessary penalties and sort out the line-out.

Re: Teams for Pre Season games Nottingham/Doncaster
DeceptivePace 13 August, 2017 11:03
Matavesi sat in the West Stand with the rest of the Islanders watching the second game, just across from us. There was no sign of any ice or a compression boot, so hopefully it was precautionary. I was particularly pleased in this day and age of sports science to see him with a pint in his hand, rather than something isotonic.
Fonua seemed to have some sort of support around his wrist, extending down to his thumb, which would explain why he wasn't involved. Have to say that he and Sinoti both look to have shed some timber from last season (I know...glass houses and stones...)

I spoke to Josh in the West Stand after the game. He said he came off as precaution as he took a bang on his hip after a tackle. Shouldn't be out just needs it to settle.'

Re: Teams for Pre Season games Nottingham/Doncaster
NorfolkFalcon 13 August, 2017 11:36
Thanks for the responses. Good to hear that Josh coming off was purely precautionary.

Heard that DTH isn't far away from full training after his injury with Canada which is good news. With him, Goneva, a fit and firing Sinoti, Agulla and the youngsters we have healthy competition on the wings.

I noticed in pre season that Fonua was looking a little trimmer. I remember him playing last season with the wrist and thumb supports so I don't believe that it is anything of concern.

Sounds like Jack Payne had a good game. Might be an option that Deano should consider baring in mind the absence of the Wilson props and Welch. Am I right in thinking that Payne can play flanker and lock? If so that's impressive!

Re: Teams for Pre Season games Nottingham/Doncaster
Cumbrian_falcon 13 August, 2017 14:08
It was nice to see some of the players who weren't involved saying their fit and ready to go just not involved but will be over the next couple of games. Specifically Sam Lockwood and John Welsh.

The squad depth is huge now and I think we can compete on all fronts and not be worried should we get injuries.

We could be in that tricky position of having to rotate players to keep them game-sharp while at the same time trying to keep a core team together. Cup games could actually be a blessing this season.
