Ground Developments

Did anyone else read the display board in the East Stand? It was at the bottom of the indoor stairwell to the tap and tackle. I quickly read it and it had various proposals including 1500 seats and a roof on the North Stand! It looks like we might be getting a new car park as well. There were artist impressions of the new North Stand and it looked great. 1500 seats up top with an area to stand below it. I thought it was quite significant and i'm suprised nobody has mentioned it on here. Or was i just seeing things?

I saw the boards but didn't get the chance to read it
Sounds good to me though
Smithy, can you add to this for people who missed it?

Re: Ground Developments
Simmo7 12 August, 2017 22:51
Didn't see it myself but heard from others around me whilst sat in the West Stand. As a North Standee I don't mind as long as they leave some cheap terracing, I don't sit/stand in the other stands because I can't afford it and I know a lot of the long term fans around me wouldn't be happy with prices going up either.

The price of a pint seems to have gone up this season about 60-70p which also an absolute @#$%& joke £4.30 ish for a pint...not to mention still having to pay for a bloody plastic cup.

Re: Ground Developments
Falconski 13 August, 2017 01:41
Thats worse than Newcastle city centre prices, the falcons take your eyes out on beer prices. Me and my mate stopped drinking at the ground for this reason, i used to buy the big big pitchers but even they got stupid money 16-17 quid for what 3 pints.

Re: Ground Developments
Falc Dancer 13 August, 2017 09:11
For those of us with little Falcons, the disabled toilet downstairs in the Tap and Tackle now has baby changing facilities. Key available behind the bar
Good addition and much appreciated

Re: Ground Developments
Geordie 13 August, 2017 09:51
As a die hard north stander I thought the roof was supposed to be on years ago but the, funding wasn't there. And additional seats on the easy stand.

Not new plans if my memory serves well.

And you pay for the beer as your a captive audience. I'm sure most grounds are the same.

I had a great day yesterday

Re: Ground Developments
falconbear 13 August, 2017 14:51
Apparently Proposed North Stand will have...

- New changing facilities for players and officials.
-1500 seats plus standing area. All roofed.
- New car park on existing North training pitch, 791 spaces. Existing overflow car park will become new all weather training pitch with change facilities and accomodation.
- Drainage to pitch west of stadium.
- New fanzone plaza at east stand.
- Creation of taxi and coach drop off areas.

Huge financial investment there. Life at the Falcons just gets better and better!

Ha, glad I'm not the only one who resents paying for the glass the beer is served in!!

Re: Ground Developments
Benpj17 14 August, 2017 17:44
The stadium improvements sound great, the £1 for a plastic pint glass is refundable so I don't see what the problem is, like I said before would rather pay a £1 refundable deposit than thousands of plastic pint glasses being thrown away each home game

Re: Ground Developments
falconbear 14 August, 2017 19:39
I'm not sure why the club are not making a bigger deal of this proposal. Strange. Next to the notice board where all of this information was being displayed they had mini questionaires asking for our opinions about the plans. I assume they are going to make a bigger deal of this when the season starts for real.

Re: Ground Developments
Rafpilot2000 14 August, 2017 20:20
I guess plans are one thing but council planning permission , contact costs and everything else willsy it's part. I'm guessing fir obvious reasons the stand workwont take place till at least next summer and similar for the car park.
We already have pretty good facilities so anything extra will be a real win for the club.i don't get the plastic cup argument though, as drinking out of a rigid plastic cup is far more civilised than the flimsy disposable ones we used to have. As pointed out , you get your £1 back at the end or get a souvenir for use at bbq!;-) I'm guessing you could probably use it all season if you so wished. I have never been one to hug trees as god knows the carbon footprint of my c-17 globemaster, but not throwing away 10,000?,15,000? Pint glasses a week must be a bonus.

Re: Ground Developments
Monkey1 14 August, 2017 21:04
Refundable plastic pots are appearing everywhere, and they do make sense if you look at the bigger picture. Good to see the juniors having fun like an army of wombles after the games, picking up the abandoned pots for pocket money. I gave two away to kids with an enterprising spirit on Saturday, they were well chuffed.

Re: Ground Developments
aidanb 14 August, 2017 22:51
The handled beer glasses are a great addition to the club.

You can collect them or redeem them but it means less is dug into the ground which is surely a good thing.

It also is easier to hold and carry.

The ground would look a mile better with a north stand to be proud of.

I'd let them go to Philly at the start of every season if it paid for things like that.

Next stop a fantastic east stand to match.

Have the plans included any proper cycle racks? Hoping to get up sometime this back end and the bike is my preferred method of transport to such events!

I would have thought they would be trying to move the people out of the east side wings and into a proper stand where they can see properly

Speaking as an East Stand regular I'd not be happy at all to be moved to the Sherpa Tensing (North) Stand. A lot of this is to do with eyesight- The East Stand "wing" is much closer to the on field action and you get the option to follow play up and down the touch line

Re: Ground Developments
Simmo7 15 August, 2017 11:05
Kids won't be allowed to return the plastic cups from now on, over 18s only, which is rubbish since they sell coke in them to kids, and a maximum of 10 cups per person can be refunded too, from what I read on a laminated sheet at the bar on Saturday.

I absolutely resent having to pay £1 extra for a cup when a pint is already $4.30, yes its refundable but at the end of a game I don't want to have to queue with tonnes of other people at the one point per stand that lets you hand them back in, the queues at the bars are slow enough. They even charge you for the two pint cups which is exactly the same as the old ones.

Re: Ground Developments
Rafpilot2000 15 August, 2017 11:54
Sadly simmo I absolutely and fundamentally disagree with you that laziness to que a couple of minutes to get a pound back means we should throw thousands of disposable cups in the landfill every home game. £4.30 or whatever for a pint is perfectly standard fir any sporting venue as obviously your not going to get wetherspoons prices at an event. If it's that bad don't ny buy a pint!! And a maximum of 10 cups is pretty reasonable as in theory your using th same one ,and even the best of us would be going some to drink 10 pints in 2 hours!
It's what all the other clubs do, it's what Twickenham does and it's good to the environment .

Re: Ground Developments
aidanb 15 August, 2017 15:28
You could think of it this way

£311 gets you 15 games in the south stand = £21 per game
which equals 26 pence per minute of Premiership rugby

4 beers at £4.30 per game = 22 pence per minute of beer.

48 pence per minute of beer and rugby to see The Falcons is great value.

and at that rate you could donate to the club the 0.01 pence per minute of plastic cup

Re: Ground Developments
Exiled Falcon 15 August, 2017 17:24
Without sounding too much like Swampy the amount of throw away plastic is absolutely horrifying (just look at any website on the effects on marine life) so if the Falcons are doing their bit I fully support it.

Re: Ground Developments
Falcons_Thunder 15 August, 2017 18:25
I have to agree on the plastic cups. Disposable ones are not an option anymore and it would be great for further ground developments tho I'm sure that will depend on attendances and attendance depends on the rugby we produce

Re: Ground Developments
Rafpilot2000 15 August, 2017 19:03
I'm
Guessing the investment is probably a shrewd move as better facilities will make the falcons a more desireable venue for hosting tournaments, cup matches or even potential concerts (god forbid).

Having seen Springsteen, Dylan and Santana at James's Park, I would love to see a gig at KP. But then, I am a child of the Seventies.

Re: Ground Developments
Rafpilot2000 15 August, 2017 19:46
Well Gloucester hosted a couple of concerts this year in their 13,000 (ish) stadium so guessing with the extra stand we could attract some bands though not sure we would be getting Springsteen or Sheeran any time soon. Are Bucks Fizz still going :-)

Re: Ground Developments
Exiled Falcon 15 August, 2017 20:06
Lindisfarne are always good for a gig!

Re: Ground Developments
Andy Mac 15 August, 2017 21:03
Aren't the plastic pint pots recyclable?

I agree minimising waste going to landfill is good.

I don't think £5+ for a pint is reasonable, regardless of what they do at twickenham.

And yes, I probably will buy less beer as a result. It's just too expensive. If I spend £25 for a ticket, buy me and my dad two beers each I'm down almost £50. I have two kids under 3 and just can't spring for that sort of cash unfortunately. (Also the reason I don't have a season ticket - both cost and time spent at ground)

Shame. (For me...I'm not looking for sympathy, I just miss having a pint at the rugby!)

Re: Ground Developments
Monkey1 16 August, 2017 08:02
In addition to the environmental angle, the new pots cost a lot, and the club needs to either recover the cost or recover the pots. We were the first club to use the two-pint pots, and they were tremendously popular, but were nearly scrapped a few years ago because they were hideously expensive and just went in the bin.

I suppose we have two choices: We have disposable pots for free that go in the bin, hopefully most will be recycled but a lot won't be, or we have decent pots and have to get our deposits back.

My only comment that the club could improve is the ability to refund we punters more conveniently, have more places where you can hand your pots in, get a refund, and head home.

As another east terrace regular i hope any redevelopment on that side would involve a terrace at lower level. Proximity to pitch and view are great cor the cost. plus the touch judges appreciate the drunken assistance with which player is offside

Re: Ground Developments

Am I missing something here? If I understand correctly, the plastic pots are rigid complete with handle and presumably can be used again, so for those wanting another pint they just get it refilled, after the game take it home and bring it back again the next match and so on. If people want to drink beer at games, I do not but have do not see a problem with those that do, a pot costing a £1 spread over the season is peanuts.

Re: Ground Developments
DeceptivePace 16 August, 2017 14:39
The real benefit of the handle pint pot IMHO is the ability to stack them and carry 4 or 5 one handed. Our group of North Stand regulars were using a set brought up from Saracens before the Falcons got on board.
Incidentally I took some to Kendal Calling music festival and they attracted loads of attention and envious glances.
For me, the cost of the deposit is a lot less important than the quality of what goes in it. I tried with Guinness for a couple of pints last Saturday before giving up and switching to cider. The black stuff in the West Bar that I had was pitifully poor, with no head from about half way down.

Re: Ground Developments
Rafpilot2000 16 August, 2017 14:42
Or indeed but one cup, use it all season then hand it back at the last game and get you up money back! Cost you nothing , and Ono had to que up once to get your refund!!! Amazing , the system works .
Maybe for those of us who don't mind we could pay a little extra and get a Falcons tankard that we can refil!!! More of a chalice than a cup!! Maybe even give on away with your season tickets .

Re: Ground Developments
steve1888 17 August, 2017 06:55
I use these cups at home all the time and spillages from the kids have almost become a distant memory and they love having their favorite players on. To buy a beaker with a cartoon character on would cost at best double but probably way more.

The handle is good too, drinks stay cooler longer not having mits wrapped round.

Re: Ground Developments

I have quite a large collection of mugs and havn't paid a penny. RL supporters either don't understand the system or don't care. Either way, they can be collected as discards after Thunder games.

Re: Ground Developments

About £1.50 a pint cheaper at the Thunder games, maybe they don't notice.

Re: Ground Developments

Getting back on topic and adding to the comments earlier, the planning app can be found on Newcastle City's planning portal with all supporting statements
2017/1451/01/DET

The two training pitches and facilities are 100% funded by RFU on condition of being completed by start of next season, I suspect the changes to the North Terrace will take a little longer. The extension of the North Terrace of 1530 new seats looks to incorporate the existing structure. I wonder if this prompts a swap of ends of the supporters.
