Flood due a big game as hasn't shown much of the quality we know he has. I would have preferred to have seen Willis at 10, but let's see.
Both teams low on confidence and difficult to call, but we have a squad to win, if we're not destroyed upfront.

On paper that looks a lot better but as Monkey alluded too that hasn't always guaranteed success!

Shame that JPS is not available, one of a small minority who can make yards through collisions.

Strong fast Saints pack. Is Brookes injured or out of favour?

On our side both Mermoz and DTH VD Merwe have hardly featured since their much publicised signings.

Don't care how we do it, but a win is much needed.Fingers crossed!!

Would like a to see Radawan or Kibirgie given a ago in place on Sinoti. Also DTH and Goneva have both been playing 13 for their countries so could be an option if Harris doesn't find his early season form.

Regardless of personnel we need a flippin good performance tomorrow night!

Matavesi and Flood stand out for me as players who owe us a big game after high profile signings and flattering to deceive so far!

Goneva back is a huge positive. The guy is simply immense and a match winner.

But we need to give Sinotti some more space aswell. He's doing a huge amount of grunt work at the moment as he's getting the ball in no space and expected to work miracles.

For me a win is essential for motivation, but style and actual performance is equally important, to lift the fans.

I would love to take something from this game and I think we have a super chance.

I have to admit it's a lot stronger side than previous weeks, and as someone said,Tane has been a big miss ,as has Goneva.

I hate to say this but I do think Rob Vicker's age is catching up with him. However I do love the guy and is he lethal from 5 /10 cm!

I also like Burrows at 8.Strong tackler and good ball carrier.Spills a lot less than Latu or gives away as many penalties.
IMO I would always combine him with Welch and Wilson at 7/8.

JPS does give us some punch, and would always,IMO,if fit have him on the bench.

Mermoz needs to stand up to the plate soon.Presume he must be carrying an injury.

COYF.

Flood has been injured, Tane away, Goneva away, mermoz injured, cooper injured etc. I think we ll get better again. Flood has a very good rugby brain and is quality. Can JPS play outside centre?

Gutsy performance. The lads really battled out there and dug deep. What won us the guy was crucial jackal turnovers, strong defensive mauls and strong defence on our try line.

The tries showed glimpses of what we can do when we get it right. You'll struggle to find a better try than the second score.

I think the criticism of Flood is a little harsh. He has only made 3 Premiership starts for us! We didn't help but playing one dimensional i.e. pass it straight to him. We needed the shorter option or Tane to take it on himself occasionally to vary our phases and give him more space. Comparing him to Delany is like comparing a Bentley to a Skoda. We need to continue supporting him.

Notable mentions to Hodgson and Latu who made a big impact coming off the bench. They made significant contributions and I don't think we would of scored that winning try without them.

Bet the Saints hate playing us now especially at the Gardens. Two late winners.

Some need reminding that we won by the looks of it...

I donít think you can blame flood too much (bar the yellow and the pass to no one). There was nothing inside him to hold the defence so the just rushed him every time. They need to mix up playing off 9 and playing off 10. Keeping the defence guessing creates space.

Tough game with very little backline fluidity but we have some good individuals that can turn momentum that weíre maybe missing last week.

Harris was a beast in defence and the line out was rock solid.

Agree with Norfolk that the criticism of Flood is harsh - he's been injured some of the time with us and has only played 6 or 7 games. Are we really in the business of writing players off if they don't play like an All Black in peak form in their first three months, especially experienced tier 1 internationals who have won multiple trophies at the highest level?

Two sides that had suffered 4 losses on the bounce in the Premiership and it certainly showed for the first 20 minutes. Scrappy and nervous due to a total lack of confidence!!
You have to give it to our boys though as there were numerous turnovers in our own 22 tonight and especially when we were a man down we showed our mental strength. Patience got us through in the end.
Not at our best but let's be honest.....an away win at FG is a massive result!!

The criticism of Flood is indeed harsh. At Toulouse, he played a lot at 12 and it will take him some time to adjust both to the Premiership and playing at 10. He was standing like a 12 instead of a 10 which was too far away from Takalua and this led to a disjointed attack.

Nevertheless he played with great spirit and will only get better.

Disclipline was very good too, apart from Floodís yellow, with only nine penalties conceded.

Maxwell-Keys doesnít appear to have a feel for the game and is just an arbiter of the rules. We were probably on the right side of decisions tonight which is not always the case.

As disappointing as recent premiership defeats have been, I would have taken 24 points after 10 games at the start of the season.

Rugby is very much a confidence game and 4 losses on the trot say it all. The players didn't become bad overnight and they probably won't come good overnight, but a win away at the Gardens will do wonders for the confidence. Training will be easier this week and next week a game to look forward to rather than be apprehensive about.

Coaches us the term "turning the corner' a lot, when things arent going well, but I do think its a fair phrase. One side was going to get the chance tonight. Im glad it was us!

That game saw the death of a bottle of pinotage but here goes anyway....

After the inauspicious start and some lack of precision that gave away advantage several times the guys have to be buoyed up by the win.

Chris Harris was a rock, Kyle was great over the ball and the line-out got better as the game went on. Toby seems to be a fraction of a second off in terms of timing - I was screaming at the intercepts (which accelerated progress towards the half-bottle mark and annoyed my daughter) but if, for the rest of the season, he can help Joel to keep defences honest, together with Tane and the back row we'll be more potent for the rest of the season.
Joel appeared to recognise that when he came on and you could see that the rest of the team appreciated his efforts after the final whistle. Signs that they can get back on the horse as a squad...
But they need to work harder to create more opportunities for the backs who tonight righted some of the wrongs from the Glos game.
That said, too often they made things difficult for themselves with various bits of sloppiness that can easily be corrected.

I'm sure Saints will be seething, and Hartley did seem to ground the ball BUT there was an enormous forward pass in the build-up so justice was probably done.

St James' Park will be interesting :-) Hopefully we can get out there and swell the numbers on the back of tonight's result!

I'm looking forward to the luxury of being able to walk to a home game in 5 minutes :-)

Flood and takulua are our best 9 & 10 the current tonga captain and a 60cap England player. They just need more game time together to build a partnership. My MOTM was Kyle Cooper he was outstanding apart from one wayward lineout and he's a proper scrummaging hooker which showed. Still a long way to go but I'll take the positives with no negatives today.

I rarely look at other teamsí forums but have had a look at the Saints board.

If you think it was doom and gloom on here over the last few premiership games, take a look over there.

There were nice comments about the Falcons in that we deserved to win and our forwards outplayed theirs, contrasted with comments such as we were average and ordinary.

Mostly, the Saints fans were piling into their players, coaches and the board (of directors) and the quality of rugby they are playing.

Reading other forums helps to give some perspective as to where the Falcons are in our development as a team and club in general at the moment. We should take confidence from wins such as last night and acknowledge the upward curve we are on, accepting that there will setbacks too.

As long as we are balanced in our comments, I like to think I am generally, praise when due and criticise when deserved our forum will be a sensible place to read and post.

Well, that was an interesting game, Falcons certainly don't make easy viewing!

First off, Saints are a really poor side. Not sure how a club with a budget and squad like that can be so bad, I'd love to have most of their players at Falcons.

I was quietly confident that we would come away with something. We've been off the boil these last few weeks, but we're a better side than Saints and it showed again last night.

Positives, some big performances from the backline. Josh and Harris combined really well and it was great to have the wingers firing. Cooper was immense at the breakdown and Wilson carried hard all night. The tackling was super physical, great to see. The amount of times we drove them back in the tackle, I lost count. Locks looked good together and suited each others play, got to stick with that. Finally, the spirit and impact from the bench is something that is an extra from previous seasons.

Negatives, Flood is not looking at the races yet but his time will come. Takalua had a pretty poor game overall. Some of our decision making was awful Why throw needless offloads in your own half when on the back foot? Why kick tap and kick the ball out for a Saints throw when it's your pen? Play with control, we had the lead, calm things down and make Saints work for points.....not give them opportunities because they're unable to create their own.

On Saints, god they're boring. Rolling maul, rolling maul, one up into contact. They have not changed tactics in 5 years, I'm glad I don't have to watch that dross every week. Also found the Saints fan rather annoying. Loads of whinging and booing. Screaming at players to hurry up etc, didn't come across well on TV at all.

It is difficult to say what sort of curve the Falcons are on. Clearly the squad depth is much stronger and reflected in better cup results and an effective bench. However, home league performance is worse than last year. Flood still has the class, but needs to get fitter and stronger so he can stand up in the tackle and offload. If he's not fully fit playing Socino and Matavesi and 10 and 12 might work well, particularly against Quins in the next league game as they've got a small teenager at 10.

The whole team were disjointed against Wasps and Gloucester. It really highlighted how Falcons rely on Takulua and Goneva to give that penetration in attack. Harris was very poor in defence against Wasps - again probably due to the enforced changes, so I think its unfair to highlight an individuals performance from either the Wasps or Gloucester game

Re-Flood, for my bit I just feel currently he's obviously not up to speed, hence my new Delaney comment. I also acknowledged he's a classy operator but not showing that at present. I think that's just a fact. It could be fitness or it could just be age? From an attack perspective I'd like to see Willis given more game time. He's just more dynamic, imo.
Agree though Flood needs more game time himself, and you can't buy experience. In the end we all just want the team to play exciting, winning rugby. That's what we need building up to going to St James park. You don't want a 53,000 seater stadium with 6,000 supporters.

I thought it a very decent game and a big improvement on recent performances. The initial ten minutes might not have been good but after that I found it an absorbing contest. There was a big improvement in the lineout, we scrummaged well for the most part and the backs performance was a step change in the right direction, if you'll excuse the pun. I thought Matavesi had a particularly good game. By the end a lot to be positive - and relieved - about.

In the closing passage of play, the BT Sport commentator was criticising Falcons for not going wide where Nikki G was poised. But we needed to score as close to posts as poss to guarantee the conversion and winning points. We'll done pack for patience. I needed a long lie down after the final whistle.

We did scrummage well, even managing to push Northampton back which was impressive. Despite this, due to the lack of competition and Vickers age, props have to be high on the shopping list.

We seemed to do ok every other scrum, then battered in the others. I hope Lockwood gets a runout next week.

Well the prop questions are.....

Where is Davy Wilson. Is he actually going to come back? Or is he finished?

Is Scott Wilson going to stay fit enough to actually find some form and become the player we hoped.

What is the crack with Mavinga. He's looking a little lost at times...ps Ive seen bigger legs at KFC!

Can Lockwood really come good and be the LH we hoped he was going to be?

Are any of the academy lads going to really make a claim...Brocklehurst..Davison etc. Are there any Carl Haymans coming through the academy?

Who would be available to sign at prop?

PS Don't forget ....scrums aren't only the front row....locks are a HUGE part of it.

Does that mean our locks aren't good scrummaging ones?

I remember some of the England front rowers saying that when Simon Shaw was in the scrum it was like having 2 extra men pushing.

I agree. Personally I think that a physical, abrasive lock to partner Green would be next on my Christmas list after the props. We have lots of options with Green, Witty, Robinson, Olmstead, Young and Cavubati but only Green has shown Premiership quality on a regular basis.

Witty is the one who puzzles me...he's piled on the weight and muscle yet doesn't seem to know how to use it properly. Maybe that's the difference between someone bulking up and someone who is naturally just a big powerful lad (like Green)

Maybe my expectations of Witty are too high...but he has real pace, size etc..he should be dominating with carrying and in the tight. He's still young though...hopefully he'll learn.

Has Cavubati even played a game?

And where has Olmstead disappeared to?? He was playing outstanding rugby then...poof gone!??

I definitely think props should be high on our shopping list especially at LH very little competition there and none coming through really, I also agree somebody pretty big in the second row would be nice to help Green, I just feel Witty could do more with his size I know he is only young and will improve most likely. smiling smiley

It's nothing to do with size, we desperately need more carriers in the pack, whether that be from those we already have or looking at who may become available. We were actually much better in this department tonight but we still need more. Olmstead, Burrows, Fonua all offer a big carrying option.

Looking at fixtures we have Quins at home next up in the Premiership and a win would see us in the top 6 at the half way point. Worcester play Irish next round too and anything other than an Irish win starts to leave them in a desperate position already and we start the second half of the season against them.

I think we'd have all took that at the start of the season.

We should take
confidence from wins such as last night and acknowledge the upward curve we are on, accepting that there will setbacks too.

As long as we are balanced in our comments, I like to think I am generally, praise when due and criticise when deserved our forum will be a sensible place to read and post.

Just looked at Saints' Forum. Can't recall seeing the same level of anger and bitterness here even at our worst. Saints are in a bad way. Great shame.

In relation to front row, Mavinga doesnít seem to be fancied and Lockwood has been injured. Once there settled and fit Iíll think that will make a difference. Same with both the Wilson's. That would then give you 3 decent options either side. Plus you then have Brock & Davison, aswell as Payne (who I liked).
Speaking as a front rower donít underestimate the importance of the Locks, or a back rower being lazy(though Iím not suggesting that).
On a side note, & appreciate Welchís performances, but would love too see a 678 combo of Wilson Latu &burrows/Fonua

don't underestimate the home crowd - it was like a pantomime - not sure if that came across on tv. Boos galore - home fans were not impressed with their team.

Don't overestimate us either! That was genuinely the quietest I have ever heard Franklin's Gardens for a Premiership game. Our crowd are losing enthusiasm and goodwill. Falcons had a great opportunity and they took it, congratulations on the win. Falcons were pretty crap, but Saints were worse and it was clear who had the belief and desire in the last 10 minutes

Dreadful positioning from CMK a lot of the time - but even when he was in a perfect position to call things he went upstairs. My god did it drag.

If the Falcons still played on a heavy pitch it would make sense to spend big money on powerhouse props. Given the surface at KP it's better to spend most of the money on players who can create and score tries. As you can feed and pick the ball out of the scrum plus referees don't give as many scrum penalties as they used to, a dominant scrum isn't as crucial as it used to be. South Africa proved the point at Cardiff today.

Iím a little bit puzzled by the requests for a bigger second row. Whenever I see the likes of Witty and Robinson on the pitch they do a decent amount of work and get some carrying done. Not sure I can remember a Green carry at all.

But the puzzlement comes in the fact we are a backs focused side at the moment.
We have pace and power out wide so why would you want the forwards taking it up? I get that we need to punch a few holes around the fringes but the damage is done by pace getting in behind them. Our setup at the moment Is geared to securing decent ball whilst keeping the defence honest and then doing the damage out wide, why slow the ball down with a trundler ?

I can't see the point of going in for another second row when we're awash with very good second rows at the club. In fact we are spoilt for choice in this area. Good props yes, but we have more than enough second rows imo.

He is a huge second row, but yeah I kind of agree we pretty well stocked there but for me a quality LH should be at the top of our shopping list. smiling smiley

You've still got to have threatening carriers to play a wide game or the inside defenders aren't going to be fixed. Robinson is good in wide channels but Witty is very limited as a carrier and as you say, Green offers nothing in this department. He is however vital to us so it means his partner has to pick up the slack.

I think we've got the players, we just seem to continue with strange combinations. Dean seems to make his mind up on something and stick to it regardless. For example and continuing our LH debate, saw Ben Harris playing for Wasps today. Chased by many leaving Leeds at a position we were short yet didn't get a look in.

Yes... for one of the best sides in the country who obviously saw something in him. All I'm saying is there are potentially answers to some of our issues already within the squad but the pack in particular is rarely changed in the AP.

I couldn't agree more. Willis threatens the gain line Flood doesn't. His England caps are a number of years ago and since then he's lost pace. I think he's fine if we kick a lot but no good at home on fast surface. I hope they sort out the situation with Willis because I think he;'s our most dynamic fly half.

I think the thing is that we're not punching enough holes to give the backs room to play. I though against Gloucester we were one -dimensional, we didn't get over the gain line or generate quick ball to give the backs a chance plus we were too deep in attack so they had time to set themselves. For me ideally we pound up front. give the backs quick ball in space. We've got people like Fonua and Burrows who can do it.

The break by Harris which allowed Sinoti to get on his shoulder and Matavesi to score was the perfect example of our MO. He forwards provide good ball but our centres are doing the damage to get in behind.

The problem with that is it can be predictable and Gloucester defended it really well, that's why I like the idea of forwards doing some grunt work round the rucks so the backs don't get double - tackled and have a bit more time and room.

Exactly. No problem with Plan A being use the backs at every opportunity to create opportunities however we need a few forwards to be available between 9 and 10. We can vary our game and create more space when we decide to use the backs. We cannot rely on the backs making all of the yards.

Excellent result.A hard fought and deserved win for the players and fans alike.
The backs looked like a well groomed unit.Best display for a long time.
Quick,Strong and Tackled well. Matavesi,Sinotti,Harris, and Goneva all played very well.
Cooper was impressive with his gutsy turnovers and gave an excellent account of himself in the scrum.
I also thought both Green and Welch operate the line-out very well.
IMO I would like to see Wilson/Welch and Burrows at 8.
Latu is for me more of a benefit as an impact player off the bench. For sure the penalty count rises when he is on the pitch, but a fans favourite.
The work that Welch and Wilson get through on the maul and sheer grunt is inspiring as the tries will show.
Welch for me continues to lead well ,does not hide, and performs week in week out to a high standard.I can undertand why he is the first name on the team sheet.
Flood without doubt is a quality player but still needs to stand up to the mark.I believe he will.

A comment from Dave Walder last week may shed some light on the Flood situation. We are playing a totally different game in the backs this season, & due to his time out at the beginning of the season he will take time to slot in, be in the right places at the right time & speed etc. I too have faith that he will come good but he needs game time to get there, the training pitch only gives half the story.
