What's with the Picture thing?

During one of today's TV games the ref complimented a player with giving him a "good picture" at a scrum. In another match the ref complained about the picture he was given. Is this an approach to reffing I must become used to?

The refs are taught to look for a scrum that has a set of square shoulders and square hips in all 6 front rows. As in they are all pushing straight.

Thatís the picture they are looking for.

Itís just the terminology they are using for it. Itís why scrum penalties these days are almost always for turning in or going down. They front row must remain straight on and their torso needs to be level also.
Gone are the days of the tighthead getting in at the hooker and the loosehead getting under the tighthead as a result.

Thanks Aidan. It seems scrummaging is becoming less interesting as an irritating light is shone on the old dark arts.

Yeah the old dark arts are a dying skill.

You canít put you head against the hooker and make the other hooker have to headbutt his way in any more.

You canít get the second row to throw a punch into the front row anymore.

Itís dull isnít it.
