Unbelievable, absolute heroes every single individual.

I'll write some more on the match when I've calmed down.

Spectacular performance, the boys definitely will enjoy this one. Matavesi, Hammersly, the oft criticized Young all excellent, Flood great while on, Hodgson a capable deputy. And the pack utterly brilliant. (scrum aside), physically dominated Exeter. This was Mark Wilson's "are you watching Eddie" performance.
Although agree with Deano's comments about the ref in the 2nd half. Was horrendous.

Doonhamer 07 January, 2018 17:12
Rarely get the chance to get to Kingston Park but boy was I glad to see them today. Three decent tries and an immense defensive performance shut the Chiefs out for long periods. It was only when we started to run out forwards they got into the game. Fair play though to everyone in that pack even with 2 hookers they fronted up. Falcons I applaud you. That was definitely a top six performance at least.

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
Kingston Parker 07 January, 2018 17:23
Very cute for Flood to take the conversion on the first try very quickly, so that there was no chance that Sir would take a look at the replay. There was an Exeter player about 3 yards away when he kicked it!

Well done Falcons. Great win. Much the better team in the first half, and held on for the win. Well deserved 4 pts, but any Falcons fans thinking they should have gone for the corner with that final kick, looking for a try BP? I thought you lacked a bit of ambition there, in a tightly contested mid table.

Ref was not great. Falcons seemed to get the rub of the green first half - esp the fwd pass for the Sinoti try, but Chiefs had a lot go their way second half- much of which they didn't really deserve. Don't think he determined the game though. Better side over the 80 mins deservedly won, which is what you want in a game.

Unbelievable performance. Matched and bettered them physically. To a man we fronted up, brave, committed, composed, skilful and we could play better!

Games like today remind me of why I buy a season ticket, hoping for performances like the players delivered this afternoon. We absolutely and thoroughly deserved that win.

To deny Exeter a LBP at the end was as much one in the eye for the referee as for Exeter.
The referee was appallingly bad and biased. Easier to say in victory as it can sound like sour grapes in defeat. He was dreadful.

Happy, happy, happy

Tremendous performance from everybody. For so much of the game we had 8 forwards but not a pack so well done. I've never seen Young play so well and the ref made some horrendous decisions. Still, alls well that ends well.

Seriously amazing from an outsider - jaw dropped in shock when the 30 min score flashed up while I was watching the sarries-wasps game.

Great to see you up in the top 6 where you (at least) belong

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
SouthFalcon27 07 January, 2018 17:32
Fatheralice, it was likely a combo of ensuring the win (Exe are so good that it is entirely feasible they would run from their own line to win the game), as well as having a pack with players out of position and a hooker playing 8.

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
fatheralice 07 January, 2018 17:36
Re the poor ref decisions in the second half
the high tackle on Sam Hill early in the second half near halfway was certainly wrong, but too far out to have a big impact on the game
The diving on Steenson on the floor in our 22 was correct, although not often called that way. Silly from the Falcons player imo - it would have been an easy penalty the other way if he had done his job properly.
I can't think of too many other really outrageous calls?

Ref did Chiefs no favours with his advantage over calls, although I don't think we managed those moments very well. You might also wonder why no card was shown if there were so many infringements.

Ref was not great - Falcons seemed to get the rub in the first half, and Chiefs in the second, but I don't think he determined the result, or made any truly game defining errors.

UnofficialEnglandRugby 07 January, 2018 17:36
What a performance - thank you Falcons you were tremendous.

As for the ref., I hope the RFU tear into him how many times did Exeter dive over. I hope it will be a while before we get him again

But Falcons you were wonderful thank you again

Not in a 5 point game, no. 4 points better than 1 every time, especially with the new law on taking penalties to touch in dead time. Plus stops Exeter leaving our place with anything which is always a good result

Unbelievable win...!

The injuries hurt us because Sean Robinson was simply immense in defence...as was Will and Gary Graham was just relentlessly physical.

I've criticised Josh Matavesi alot but he was my mom today. Put in the 12 performance of top quality. Brick wall defence, dumper truck in attack...passed well and kicked cleverly!

The whole team were outstanding

As to the ref...I think everything has been said....baffling for the most part .

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
alas 07 January, 2018 18:04
Very proud of the Falcons' performance today. Top-class rugby in the first-half and heroic defence in the second when disrupted by injury against very powerful if rather uncreative opponents who had almost all the ball and a lot of decisions.

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
NorfolkFalcon 07 January, 2018 18:08
Right I have just about calmed down enough to write my thoughts.

I'm really struggling to know where to start. It was a gargantuan performance culminating into a gargantuan result. The effort that the players gave in the face of adversity (Flood, Welch, Graham and Robinson all forced off causing us to play 2 hookers in the pack for 30 minutes and the referee) was inspiring. I have been one of the biggest critics of our scrum but cannot fault the props as they were really up against it today. Vickers and Welsh were given treatment during the game and kept going. Everyone was committed to the cause and did not hesitated to put their bodies on the line. Without sounding over dramatic, it was Herculean stuff at times.

Sinoti Sinoti was on fire, he is back to his best shown the season he was selected for team of the year. His try was sublime and had his run at the start of the second half been scored that would have been try of the season in the Premiership. Outstanding stuff, be very afraid the rest of the Premiership. I sincerely hope he signs an extension.

Other notable mentions to Gary Graham who was sublime before he was forced off. He's quickly becoming a favourite of mine with his uncompromising, dogged performances which would not look out of place for England. Again I've been another critic of Michael Young but he played extremely well in all facets of the game. The centre pairing for their defensive effort, Josh Matavesi securing a number of turnovers and kicked sensibly. Please can we get Vereniki Goneva to stay? Do whatever it takes, he's still a top performer.

Finally the fans were magnificent today and certainly player their part in securing his result. You were extremely loud and it helped the players dig deep.

I was p***sed off by a ref& touch & judges who could not seen Woodburns'blatant blocking - he must have thought it was a NFL game and his neck stretcher tackle. Pens at the scrum went Exe's way unless they were shunted backwards, when the scrum was reset. If Falcons' retreated (?) the scrum was never reset, just penalised. In the entire match, the ref gave pens Falcons pens 2 awards, the last enabled Joel to kick the pen and deny Exe a LBP, the first was when Joel subbbed Toby. Even though we won, it was against a de facto 16 man Exe side. After the match I offered no applause to the losers. Frankly they should hang their heads in shame. Some would say they they are just streetwise.

Chiefs fan in peace - well done the Geordies !
Yep the ref was poor and so were we for too long but more importantly your lads put their bodies on the line and forced therefore deserved the win.
Go on though admit it....you were squeaky bum for the last 2 minutes weren't you ?!
Good wake up call for us, we may be prem champs but you never stop developing and we have lots more to do.

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
Osric 07 January, 2018 18:54
Who had a bad game?

No-one.

Except the ref who had a shocking second forty.

Young was very good and distributed with zip. Big shout out to our new back row forward, looked rather like Scott Lawson.

Defence was great - again.

Re scrum, hard to tell given all the injuries but I was very impressed when Lockwood came on for the warrior like Bobby V.

Matavesi - best game for us?

Cooper - one of my favourites over the last season and a half - tenacity personified.

So much for some fool posting on here about the Chiefs being our bogey team.

Here's hoping we continue to build and get somewhere near their levels of consistency and achievement.

Bring on the Russians!

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
Greggs 07 January, 2018 18:56
Absolutely tremendous performance. What a great game of rugby. Everyone played so well I can't really pick any one individual who stood out. Sinoti got the official MoM but it could quite easily have been Wilson, Cooper, Goneva, Matavesi...

I was impressed with Hodgson today - replaced Flood who had to that point been playing very well, knocked over a missable conversion with his first touch and more or less didn't put a foot wrong thereafter (including putting in two or three really good tackles). For a 'confidence player' to do that in such circumstances and against that opposition was nice to see I thought.

As most people have said the ref had a bit of a stinker - for me the main bugbear was his apparent determination to introduce a new law whereunder a player who is supporting his entire bodyweight on the soles of both feet - with no other parts of his body in contact with the ground - can be classed as 'off feet.' Also stupid little things - e.g. the pen that crossed the touchline on the Exeter 22, for which the touchy awarded a lineout practically on the halfway line...

No. I was squeaky bum for last 40! We often drop off in second half and was dreading what the champs would be able to do to us.

Outstanding stuff to get the win.

The ref was clueless - easily the worst reffing I've seen in a long time. Exeter players could have skateboarded into a ruck and wouldn't have been pinged for off their feet.

Matavesi MOM for me. I think he's been a really good signing and showed it again today.

A patched together pack getting marmalised in the scrum and we still win.

Well played Chiefs in second half, though. Tons of possession, territory and points - thought you looked like a very good outfit indeed.

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
AJfalc 07 January, 2018 19:25
I have just looked down the team sheet and agree with everyone above, everyone played well and difficult to pick out a MOTM, also every player who came off the bench did well. It was a day when Exeter made some mistakes, knockons in attacking situations etc but we'll take the win. I lost count of the number of times people around me said "whats that for?" when another penalty was awarded against Falcons in the second half - but I am biased.

......

By your own admission the ref was awful and with the game won we made the right decision not to give him another chance to ping us and keep Exeter in the game.

I think he was the most error prone ref I’ve seen.

I’m delighted the falcons decided to end it calmly and not risk a pen to Exeter which gave the ref the chance to help them up the field.

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
DeceptivePace 07 January, 2018 19:34
The 2 things that the referee seemed to consistently ignore when Exeter had the ball were in at the side and dummy runners in front of the ball carrier. Fair play to the Chiefs; they sussed him out and played him accordingly. Luckily we did enough in the first 40 to get ahead.
I would echo the comments about Cooper, Matavesi and Sinoti and add Latu to the list. I love watching him play for us, he simply hurls himself into every contact situation. He may make mistakes but by God he empties the tank for the shirt.

POW WOW.....get in you beauty!!!!

I think its pretty much already been said in previous posts....but how good were we today!!
Extremely disappointed however to see that some of the Chiefs fans saying how they had 10 players missing and had an off day. Absolute utter rubbish!!!
We all have players missing and Chiefs were very good today so I'm not buying this " we played poorly" nonesense.
There are days when you just have to hold your hands up and say you were beaten by a better team as was the case today.
Thanks to the Chiefs fans who are been gracious in defeat however.

I'm now going to kick back with a beer and seriously enjoy the highlights.....GET IN!!

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
The Gambler 07 January, 2018 19:41
The ref was not just poor he failed in his key task - the welfare of the players. You need to ask how it was that so many Falcons players went down or off because of head injuries. The red card and subsequent ban for Socino earlier in the season was nothing like the repeated way Exeter Cheats used it in the tackle and followed through in the ruck and clear outs. The officials missed/ignored many late hits. The travelling fans can't really complain about the Sinoti try as we're owed one by the ref. Ian Tempest uses the video footage of how he wrongly awarded one for them against us at Kingston Park as an example of how not to ref a game. The Exeter fans can also not complain about missing out on a losing bonus point as the final score still flattered their team.

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
Falc Dancer 07 January, 2018 19:49
Fantastic result
I am looking forward to seeing the highlights before I make my mind up about the referee. He certainly gave Exeter a lot of penalties in the second half including a blatant turn over by Bobby Vickers right in front of he post which would have given us a nice cushion
Michael Young had a great game today
Hopefully the injuries we suffered to Flood, Welch, Robinson aren’t bad

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
NorfolkFalcon 07 January, 2018 20:19
Fortunately Deano said post match that all players taken off were 'okay'.

“They’re all OK. Gary Graham just landed on his hip, then Toby Flood and Will Welch both failed head injury assessments.

Two head injuries in quick succession for Welch is a little worry.

From a Worcester fan: I've not seen the game but a fantastic result!

That's the sort of comment that makes me love this game. Much appreciated Halfback, and thank you.

On a similar note, I was pleased to hear the announcer asking for appreciation for the Exeter supporters. They travelled a long way & most made a whole weekend of it, a great bunch who are always most welcome at Kingston Park.

I have to be honest & admit that I was expecting us to get a thorough drubbing today. I have no idea, I just felt in in my bones. I am delighted that my bones got it wrong, and now after being sober for far too long it is time to open some beer & celebrate.

Nothing much I can add to any of the above comments except what a superb team effort, from the 15 on the pitch & also the supporters in the stands who definitely made a difference today. If you were one of the many who bellowed the boys home to a fantastic win, take a bow & feel proud of yourself.

A day to remember.

I was stood next to a family from Exeter who weee flying back tonight.

I hope they had a safe journey.
Mam, dad and 2 kids aged about ten.

Good crack and nice to see

Unlike the tale my sister told me today of her trip to the riverside yesterday to see boro beat Sunderland and for her brother in law to witness a young boro fan have his teeth smashed across the street by a bunch of Sunderland fans.

Refs getting abuse is nowt compared to that.

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
Cumbrian_falcon 07 January, 2018 21:11
Stunning result sheer grit and determination to win was a joy to see. I expected a tough time today and never thought a result like this was possible. Sinoti was brilliant I missed his try as I went to the toilet (typical) josh matavesi gave everything the whole forward pack to a man were immense and my man of the match was Michael Young. I will admit I’ve been a critic of his for a while and when I saw his inclusion I thought we would box kick and play negative rugby, how wrong was I, this was by far his best game in a black shirt. The sniping and ferocious tackling was great to see.

This has to breed the confidence a few weeks off to rest and recuperate what a great time to be a falcon.

We just need the signature from Deano now.

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
Northumbrian 07 January, 2018 21:16
The strange thing about such a fantastic win is that the Falcons are one place down the table compared to last week. Bonus points make such a big difference.

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
steve1888 07 January, 2018 21:39
Great result and some incredible defence and more last grasp tackles than I've ever seen, excellent. First half was outstanding! Matavesi is some player and Micky Young answered all his critics he was brilliant today.

Sinoti Sinotis try was brilliant as was his charge through numerous players second half but if he'd gave that to Hammers he had a clear run in. Goneva steal was unreal!

Great game of rugby, had pretty much everything.

Well done Exeter players too, despite a result that must have hurt there was a good few of them over and chatting to their fans and thanking them for making the long trip, seen our lads do that plenty too and it's great to see. The kids were made up they got their photo with Henry Slade and the missus seemed happy to see him too, although Flash was still their highlight and shame he's not out more.

Great to see so many happy kids on the pitch post match too. Great afternoon out, cheers Falcons!

It a shows the performance of the team when we all had different moms from the game. Robinson was mine until he went off but I then gave it to Matavesi. Others have said Sinoti or Young etc.

High level team performance!

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
Bedlington Lad 08 January, 2018 08:23
Fantastic team effort - best first half I've seen for ages. I thought Matavesi was standout with his tackling and clearance kicking. I also think that was the most one-eyed reffing performance I've ever seen - it was like the guys were playing 16 men.

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
Pool_falcon 08 January, 2018 08:40
The ref was pretty bad, I was shocked when he finally gave us 2 pens near the end.

The scrum was well and truly battered for 80mins but we somehow managed to work round this, credit to the boys.

I'm not into this bashing of Exeter and calling them cheats etc, that's not what rugby is about for me. It's up to the ref to catch them out or our captain to try and bend his ear, neither happened really.

Exeter are an great team and really good to watch, I hope they do well for the rest of the season.

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
dick g 08 January, 2018 08:49
It was our defence wot dunnit. By not over-committing at the breakdown, our defensive line was largely intact. Chiefs did their multi-phase attack, but had to kick and give up posession when it failed to cross the gain-line. Only in the second half when our guys began to tire - and with ample help from Sir - did the Chiefs manage to get anywhere.

I think this was the best Falcons performance since Rob Andrew led the newly-created side to a two titles and two cups.

Re: We've Beaten The Champions!
upwardonward 08 January, 2018 15:20
Quite superb in defence, and sublime in attack.

Falcons made twice as many tackles in the first half as Exeter. Just shows that whilst Exeter's ball retention is good,Falcons defence was quite superb.Tries were worth the entrance money alone!

Sinoti sent the Exeter player to the East Stand bar for 2 pints!

I thought the first half defensive performances of Welch,Wilson,Graham were excellent. The neck roll on Welch was naughty. The best back line I have seen for many years, fast and strong.
Quite simply everyone performed.

Moment of the match IMO..Joel Hodgsons Turnover 10 mtrs from our try line with around 2/3 mins on the clock.

I have a feeling the injury count might be quite high.I reckon some sore players this morning.

That was a 100% perfomance .Well done lads.

I only managed to catch the last 20 minutes but that turnover was quite impressive - looking forward to watching all the replay.
I get the impression that Joels goal kicking has improved since last season or is that a death wish?
