Supporting Wasps FC. Rugby at Twyford Avenue

Firstly, I wish like to state that this post has no political overtones concerning the move whatsoever. I say support Wasps how you wish. So please do not wreck this post by arguing about the move, there are plenty of other threads for that.

For those of you who cannot travel to Coventry, why not come along to Twyford Avenue in Acton and support the original Wasps team founded in 1867.

It will be a very different experience, as Wasps FC play in the London & S.E. Division - London 3 North West. The first XV Senior Team play at 2.15pm or 3pm on Saturdays and are currently lying 10th in the table. They play teams like Stevenage, Grasshoppers (Brentford), Hackney & Fullerians (Watford). Last weekend they were beaten 20 -7 by Hackney, so you can see they could do with all the support they can get.

I have been speaking to Richard Green the Chairman of the Club and Head of Senior Men’s rugby to get his vision of the club now and moving forward. His goal is to get Wasps playing London 1 rugby in a few years’ time. However he wants to achieve this whilst staying amateur and by bringing the majority of players and coaches through the Wasps system.

One of the key points Richard wanted me to get across was to ‘manage expectations’ this is NOT Premiership rugby and these guys do not get paid. Just like the old days these chaps play the game for the love of it and we need to temper our comments accordingly.

Richard stated that there are two main areas we could help out with. One, getting people along to support the team and two, putting money over the bar, something for which we are possibly over qualified (Sm14). There is no charge to watch on match days, but you can join the Club as a full voting member for £25 via the website (below).

I have been talking to John Gadsdon and a few of the Late Coach regulars this week and we are looking to get our first ‘ crowd ‘ together at the Fullerians home game on Saturday 13th December. We will be marking this occasion by making it ‘ Wear Your Oldest Wasp Shirt Saturday ‘. It doesn’t matter if its two sizes to small (or big, yeah right!), has holes in it or is sporting a slightly interesting aroma (downwind please), the older the better.

Obviously if you can get to earlier matches home or away all the better.

Set out below are the remaining home fixtures:

Sat 25th October Wasps v Stevenage Town 3pm

Sat 15th November Wasps v Datchworth 2.15pm

Sat 13th December Wasps v Fullerians 2.15pm

Sat 10th January Wasps v Finchley 2.15pm

Sat 31st January Wasps v Hackney 2.15pm

Sat 21st February Wasps v Old Streetonians 2.15pm

Sat 7th March Wasps v Belsize Park 3pm

Sat 21st March Wasps v Hitchin 3pm

Sat 11th April Wasps v U.S.C. Old Boys 3pm

Check out the FC website at [www.pitchero.com]
for directions, away match dates, details of the other 20 Wasp teams etc etc. It maybe a little difficult to access but you really should have a look at the FC club shirt with ‘Once a Wasp, Always a Wasp’ on the back – it’s a cracker.

Finally, I have almost no knowledge of social media sites i.e. Twitter or Facebook etc but have heard that there are other Wasps related sites that fans visit. I would really appreciate it if someone could re-post this information to get the message out to Wasps fans who can’t get to Coventry or who would like to re-connect with the old club.

Really hope to see some of you there (Sm128)
