First keypoint in HEC qualification this afternoon

Glaws v Saints.

Winner gets HEC spot.

Should it be Glaws, then for Wasps, a Top 5 finish or win the Amlin to qualify.

Saints, Wuss and Falcons away with Irish and Bath at 'home', we do need the cavalry to return from England duty and the injury list to give our cause a boost.

More than anything else, the profligacy which seems to have blighted many of our performances, this season, has to be eradicated. Otherwise another season of Amlin rugby is in prospect.

Lets hope Saints win. Which they should to be honest.

Tonga'huia just ran 80 yards up the pitch but Saints could not turn it into points. Saints currently lead 27-21.

But Tonga will be a huge loss for Saints, great capture by Sarries!

Apart from the ca$h why would you want to leave Northampton and join Saracens ?

...I means He's not even South African.

And he won't win anything there!

Good game

Simplifies the HEC issue though. Top 6 (including Saints) will go through.

+ Amlin winners

so Glaws and/or Quins will have to finish on a great streak to have much chance of displacing any of the top 6 unless anyone has a melt down

Petros, unless Saints win the HEC or go further in the competition than any of the French sides, then only 6 English sides will qualify.

If the Amlin is won by Wasps, Glaws or Falcons, and they do not finish in the top 6 (and the French advance further than Saints in the HEC) then only the top 5 plus the Amlin winner will qualify.

The ball is in our court to achieve both options!!

Not quite true you will be pleased to hear

Quote:
from ERC site
HEINEKEN CUP QUALIFICATION
Another significant boost for the tournament sees the winner of the Amlin Challenge
Cup, who will continue to qualify for the following season’s Heineken Cup, also earn an
additional Heineken Cup spot for the country of the winner.

From the 2009/10 season both the Heineken Cup and Amlin Challenge Cup winners
will qualify automatically for the following season’s Heineken Cup and will each earn an
extra Heineken Cup spot for their countries – over and above their guaranteed
allocations.

However, England and France, who have six automatic places, will only be allowed a
maximum of seven teams, so if either country wins both the Heineken Cup and
Amlin Challenge Cup the second additional spot will pass on to the club with the
highest ERC European Ranking who has not already qualified from any of the other five
nations.

The changes mean that the Italian / Celtic League 24th Place Play-Off is no longer
required and the extra place earned by England this year, which was available to the
most successful nation from England, France or Italy, is also no longer applicable.

Teams will continue to qualify through their domestic tournaments with each nation
having the following number of automatic places:
England and France – 6 each
Wales and Ireland – 3 each
Scotland and Italy – 2 each

The 23rd and 24th Heineken Cup places will go to the nation(s) of the Heineken Cup and
Amlin Challenge Cup winners, with England and France capped on a maximum of
seven teams each.

what this means is that top 6 are in plus an extra place for winner of HC (could be Northampton but slightly unlikely with Munster away at Thomond) which would devolve to 7th in GP or winner of Amlin (could be Newcastle or 7th team if already in top 6 such as Wasps).

Either way top 6 in GP will definitely secure a HC place for 10/11 season now that Glawster missed the LV route for one of the six normal places for English teams.

Hope this is clear
