Traditionally the Sale 10 is a kicking machine.
Hodgson was indeed a kicking machine for sale, but certainly not at the expense of his creative spark. He and Kinga were head-to-head the two best flyhalves to watch in england across nearly a decade between 2000-08.
Traditionaly sale have always actually been an incredibly creative, running rugby team. Think back to the days even before hodgson when the likes of Jim Mallinder, david rees & Jos Baxendall used to be amongst my favourite to watch. Then were the years of redpath, hodgson, graeme bond, hanley & cueto. Then Peel, hodgson, McAllister, Robinson, Foden...
It's only really the last 2 or 3 seasons since the big post PSD exodus that Sale have regressed into a much less free-flowing, scrappy style and I'd say as much as anything it's because they have simply lacked the quality of playes to do anything else.
But start to combine cips with tuitopu who is still a natural gamebreaker, and young exciting talents like rob miller, tommy bell, tom brady & iain thornley and you have the makings of an exciting back line. Add Richie Gray to a pack with guys like Seymour, gaskell, Myall, Henry Thomas - and you have quite an exciting pack too.
Tey'll need 3 or 4 more signings in the mould of Gray & Cips but if they secure those too there's no reason sale can't get back to playing their old swashbuckling style again.
