Good to see the usual complaints about Wasps "cheating" are on Facebook and Twitter...

What is the accusation? Or was it tongue in cheek?

I am pleased with our squad and there is no doubt that after a similar tactic in the 7s last year we hit the ground running in the first game of the season against Exeter so why not use our main squad players in this tournament to help sharpen their skills. Good for the crowd too.

Reallt didn't enjoy some of the childish comments on the Tigers board by their fans.

Several sets of club fans are claiming Wasps have ignored the ethos of the sevens being for development sides and we are "cheating" by using so few academy.

Personally I disagree. For me the A league is for development. Sevens is a bit of summer fun for the 15's and will be made up of anyone in the club who has the gas to keep up with 7's speed of play. We're lucky that our first 15 is built for speed so why not use them? What I object to is clubs who parachute in 7's ringers. Fortunately it doesn't appear to have happened this year.

I have to agree that I don't really get the development thing. How does playing 7s help develop anyone? Surely they'd develop more by not taking a week or two out practicing for 7s?

Thanks MN. Doesn't really make sense, surely more disrespectful to the competition to field a weak team. I guess it suits Wasps style of play so will be constructive to preparations for the season. That may not be the case for others, but hard to see how one week of lung busting will be so harmful to anyone's preparations though.

If it were a development tournament then the rules about selection would reflect that and I suspect it wouldn't be on tv or receive related sponsorship?

Anglo-welsh and A league games are for developing the academy and giving them first team XVs exposure... The pre-season sevens is an opportunity to fill in the close season with something fairly competitive and promote the Aviva Premiership. It's not at all worthwhile if all the club's play local University players and ringers from other leagues, and I'm sure Singha's level of sponsorship going forward may well reflect this...

I've seen the fairly petulant comments, mainly on the @#$%& cat board about hoping players gain injury etc. Meh... It doesn't really bother me, I'll just look forward to the competition and seeing our players more than they will.

I personally think it is a good exercise to get the new players out on show and playing competitively together. I don't think having a strong squad means it will be a walk over. 7s is highly unpredictable and I'm sure the academy and drafted in players will be pushing extra hard to shine against a decent side.

Considering it is the premiership sevens, the squads should be made up of premiership players, seems we are following the proper blueprint for the event and other teams are chickening out not wanting to risk their first XV players for a bit of fun.
Il be there saturday, in black and gold cheering the boys on, looking forward to seeing Watson and Lovobalavu have a run out.

I can appreciate running out academy and squad players, it gives them something to focus on and a run out. But we seem to use it more as part of the s&c of our first team, and given the expanded a-league this season, it makes more sense that way in my opinion.

I suppose how the clubs view it is up to them, but in my opinion at the very least they should field teams of players who are actually on their books (senior or academy) rather than boosting numbers with ringers. I think Falcons a couple of years ago fielded the Scottish 7's squad, this year they have 2 young guys from the local uni and Quins in the past I think have thrown in the odd England 7's player ..... I've not bothered to look this year who Tigers are fielding, they actually don't seem to bother with it or take it seriously.

Other supporters moaning that we are using our own players is laughable.

Cheating would be if we threw in cips and le roux as well. That would just be unfair....

The ethos is mainly for academy and fringe players but not mandatory but a tad embarrassing if an experienced bunch of 15s players don't progress, no way is it development and no way is it just for fun. There will be selectors watching with great interest for the Olympics and some of the Wasps players may be making a pitch for consideration (no names but especially the one not to be considered good for 15s by EJ ;-) ) .

Only real ringers this year seem to be from Sarries (surprise surprise!) who are bring for 7s specialists not on Sarries contracts.

For me I am not sure Cips has the speed needed for 7's, and WLR is recovering from an operation, so not available.

Which of their players? Names please - I shall be there watching on Saturday, come rain or shine - looks like it might be wet this evening for the pool games though. Might be dry for our game vs Falcons, but wet for the Tigers game.

Cips isn't as fast as he was but i reckon he's faster than Robson. He's still no slouch. There again Robson will be in a different role.

Don't take it too literally....

Anyway - serevi wasn't all that fast by the end. Nor Eric rush. Nor Ben gollings or Henry Paul. Tom Mitchell isn't rapid.

But theyre all fast in a 5 yard box, all pull opposition defences into knots and put the gas men into space.

Cips would still be class at 7s.

Did Cips play any sevens for us during his first stint?

He was part of the wasps team that won the 2007 Middx 7s at twickenham. He and Hasks should by rights have been in France for the World Cup.

Sorry - won in 2006. Good side. Lewsey, amor, Hasks, cips, waldouck, webber, Mark McMillan all involved.

But I'm sure cips also played the next year.

He also played a lot of England IRB circuit.
