No Middlesex 7's this year
waltham 29 February, 2012 12:53
Just announced:

The Middlesex Sevens is being postponed, so for 2012 there will be no tournament at Twickenham Stadium.

There is no one reason for the postponement it is really a combination of the Olympics taking up half of July and all of August, other events booked into Twickenham and the availability of teams.

Thank you for your support to date and we look forward to next year.

Watch this space for the launch of the new format for the Middlesex Charity Sevens in 2013 and beyond!

With Rugby 7s becoming part of the Olympics in 2016, I would of thought that they might have taken the opportunity to showcase the sport during the 2012 Olympics.

This would have been a great opportunity to invite the invitational sides from the abroad IRB legs (US, NZ, Australia, South Africa, Hong Kong) as well as a few local sides and regular invitational sides as a practice for 2016 and to get people's attention.

Imagine China, Russia, the US and Jamaica all playing 7s during the olympics - great opportunity to catch travelling fans and those who didn't get olympic tickets. Or even better, a pub team like the White Hart Marauders against the US or the Wooden Spoons/ H4Hs against Russia.

Oh yes. Not having the first Olympics 7s in London, but waiting for the next Games, was a big, big mistake. Not showcasing 7s around the Olympics is a big error by the PsTB. Very disappointed.

As Lazyboy suggest, travelling fans will have plenty of days with no Games tickets.

I thought it was the tradition that new sports appeared as an exhibition sport in the previous Olympics.

Sevens would have been the only thing to get me in the slightest bit interested in the whole tawdry business this summer which seems to have one legacy, the destruction o Greenwich Park.
