St Patrick's day game

The match this year will be a bit of a come down after16 years, with only two stands open. The days of 23,000 crowds have gone then ! This explains the low key advertising for the game.
Why could all of the ground not be opened up for this game?
It will be a big disappointment this year not to experience that atmosphere.

Won't sell enough tickets?

I'm sure 24,161 people would love to come and watch second division rugby...

Think about 10,000 are expected so will be biggest crowd of season. Maybe they might have to open the north if enough tickets are sold - but two stands is better than one

The St Patrick's game is as much about being Irish and enjoying the entertainment before the game as the game itself hence the reason for the big crowds.

The club base their expected St Pats crowd on around 3x the season average. If the demand surges, sure, they could open the North and East but as per above with Six Nations on too, I'd be surprised if more than 10k turn up.

I think I'm right in saying it clashes with the six nations finale so that will be a factor as well

The St Patrick's game is as much about being Irish

When 75% of the crowd is English?

Could they put those who are more interested in the pre match entertainment in the north stand so that those of us who are only interested in tha game can watch in peace?

Hi guys,Cornish Pirates fan here ,some of us are traveling up on the Friday before the game, and we were wondering if any of you lovely ladies and gentlemen could give us some advice of a local pub that wouldn't mind a few boys and girls meeting up for a beer or two, many thanks in advance for any suggestions

If you're staying at the Madejski Hotel (or Hilton) then you'll need to get into Reading town centre where you'll find a lot of pubs and bars, some of them are actually quite nice!

Recommended (in order of distance from middle of town):
The Allied Arms
The Butler
The Nags Head

What kind of boozer and where are you staying?

Reading town centre narrows the choice to The Gateway, Greyfriars or The 3 Guineas. Quick cab ride out of town open ups more options

Seems as if most of us are either at the Holiday Inn just off the M4 or indeed the Hilton

Griff 24 February, 2017 16:57
Holiday Inn and Hilton are out by the stadium so you'll need a short taxi or a 20 minute walk. All HMRC's pubs are by the station which is handy if you're travelling by train. I suggest the three I suggested are a little better (and if HMRC's entire experience of Reading is those three boozers I suspect he's not that fond of Reading...)

If you're after late drinks The Purple Turtle is a local tradition or the After Dark both are "experiences". I actually love the Turtle but it's very much a young man's game and that ship's sailed. You may enjoy it if you're into that sort of thing, it's open until 4 Friday and Saturday. Obviously there'll be bouncers and a long queue but that's the price of late-night drinks.

You're not far from each other but you're not in an area with any decent pubs.

The 3 Guineas by the station has just been refurb'd and is very expensive (even by Reading standards)
Nearby is the Greyfiers which is full of decent beer, craft lagers, etc but is a bit hipsterish.
Then there's the Gateway which is a proper Irish pub with well priced basic food and good Guiness but only 1 ale & a few popular lagers.

Also in the town in the Allied Arms which will have 4-6 proper beers and a beer garden full of heaters that can be sat in at any time.
Slightly out is the Butler & Nags Head. The Nags has about 12 proper beers compared to the Bulter's measly 8. The Butler's does food and is run by a Scottish LI supporter who has previously played for a Cornish invitation team in the past. The Nags does more basic pub grub like pies.

There's also all the chains you could ever think of.

Hasn't the After Dark closed?

The Hope Tap in Reading is very similar to the Witherspoons pub in Penzance.

Another Pirates supporter here. There are plenty of Pirates heading up to invade Reading especially to share the craic with you. We all had such a good time when you visited us! We know there is some entertainment in the main bar area at the stadium after the match (with the Ire vs Eng match being shown) but we understand that entertainment finishes around 7pm. Given that plenty are staying over I think generally most want to carry on the craic in a rugby/Irish friendly pub that maybe has a St Patrick's night on? We'd ideally like to do that with as many London Irish supporters as possible.

I don't think there is any chance of opening extra stands.
The pre match events are using the East Stand concourse so that cannot be used for the game and I expect the North Stand will have marathon paraphernalia parked outside it and in the concourse.
Based on recent years 2 stands will be plenty, it's 12,000 seats which is nearly 5 times the crowds for games this season...

Re: St Patrick's day game
Jon_r43 24 February, 2017 22:18
The plan is to site the main bars and stage outside the East stand and use the facilities in the East Stand so it was certainly suggested that some of the East could be used. Personally would be surprised if we do much more than fill the West and North.

Not sure about where people will head after 7pm one of the issues we have and i guess share with pirates is the distance that some of us travel, many will be heading back to outlying areas or London at the end of the 6 nations games.

Should be a good day...

One thing to consider if staying into Sunday is the half marathon [/url]
and the associated road closures

If the east Stand concourses are in use then you obviously can't use the East Stand seating as there is no way of controlling access or numbers if the turnstiles have been bypassed.
I'm assuming you meant South rather than North, the North stand won't be available.
The practicalities and the realities seem to align pretty well, 12,000 seats is plenty in the two stands. Given the space behind the East Stand even that is going to make the prematch stuff very crowded.

Hello again. Many Pirates supporters are going to head down to The Gateway Irish pub after 7pm if you'd care to join us. Live Irish music from 830pm!! Yeghes da!
