Telegraph - bottom of page - Championship to be reviewed

So the RFU are bringing in management consultants to review the Championship, ahead of the 2019 global season !

That'll be money well spent

Basically they’ve bottled making the decision themselves.

That's why the consulting firms keep on going - no-one will disagree when you say Top Four consulting firm said here's the information and recommendations.

Do it yourself and makes you responsible and no-one wants that! Also means RFU have a basis on which to propose changes

I just do not see how they can say relegation is a bad thing.

I was at Exeter 11 years ago as one of a crowd of about 500 fans. How can it be a bad thing for a club to get promotion and win the league and expand its fan base?

It did not do saints or Quins any long term hard they both won the league after being relegated. Newcastle who are now 4th have been relegated as have Worcs.

What Exeter did was phenomenal, but it simply won’t happen again. The game is a completely different beast now. Even established clubs with cash, like Bath for example are struggling to get traction. The RFU needs to realise that the financial implications are to great to allow clubs to risk their future. Everyone seems to have forgotten about Welsh. Expand the league to be more inclusive of the more competitive teams in the championship. Let’s not get carried away expecting a small team to suddenly rise up and win the league, it won’t happen.

The team who aren’t top of their league? I appreciate they are an exciting team with an enthusiastic backer but that’s a far cry from a club with a huge geographical base of players to choose from, not to mention the schools and university. I think Ealing are in an area quite diluted by rugby. I believe they would prosper if they were included in the prem but I don’t think they’d ever threaten the top half of the league. Good luck to them but they’ve been in that league for quite a while and haven’t really threatened to win it. They probably will next year now that I’ve said all this.

I think any team could threaten if enough money were thrown at it. Attendances aren't a huge issue if you can easily afford to pay up to the cap, purchase P shares of a straggler + marquee signings.

But it takes plenty of cash given the salary cap is much higher than it was when Exeter came up

Effectively I don’t think we can draw comparisons, even though it wasn’t all hat long ago in terms of the pro era, to me it feels like Exeter came up at time at the best possible time. You didn’t need the huge amount of cash you do now. Even with that cash, you’re guaranteed nothing. Look who bath have and had have on the books for the last five years. They nearly had England’s entire backline. Watson, Ford, roko, Joseph, eastmond, banahan. They now include a Welsh and lion at 8, welsh second row and South African international flanker. To me bath are still really average

IMHO opinion best solution is to increase prem to 14 teams and scrap the anglo-welsh. Then have a 2 leg play-off at the end of the season between team bottom of prem and top of champ. You are effectively ring-fencing prem, but is still a route up for clubs in the lower divisions.

You will also still have the same number of games in a season so fans don't miss out and players aren't having anymore games.

People might argue about recruitment there dooj

Potentially, but if the prem teams are that much better than the championship teams (as is being suggested with the whole ring-fencing idea in the first place) then the prem teams should win the play-off anyway and thus should be able to all but guarantee prem rugby just like the bigger clubs can - IMHO!!

However, I do except that if a championship team does get promoted, then they could have issues in terms of recruitment.

The relegation playoff idea is being used in TOP14 this season, so will see will be interesting to see how it goes there.

Be careful what you wish for.

There is no guarantee that we would be part of a ring-fenced Premiership.

The league have made it clear that they see Bristol as a better option than us with more money in the club and a much bigger fan base.

Obviously we have the Premiership share at the moment. I can however see no reason that if they are so minded they can say that they will dissolve that competition and set up Premiership Style 2 as a replacement inviting the clubs they want to be involved in.

I am sure that could be subject to a legal challenge by LI but given that litigation is an extremely expensive business with no guarantees and given that Mr Crossan is not prepared to invest unlimited monies into the club, would he go along that route?

If you are out of the premiership for 2 years, you have to sell the P shares if asked (not sure if they can be split or have to go to the new club) - in my view that would be the point at which ring fencing comes in. trying to find anything out on the closed shop that is the Premiership is like trying to find out information about a Cayman Islands registered company

Re: Review of the Championship...... h/t Bris thread.
Margin_Walker 13 March, 2018 10:32
That's how I understand it too on the P shares. Basically you should be okay as long as you go straight back up (or run out of money...). Unlikely to be ring fenced out.

Miss out on promotion though and you are vulnerable.
