That's actually a pretty encouraging core of players to be building from with a few re-signings and recruitment.

Would be nice if we could have a big announcement like other clubs to say that 5 or 6 players have extended their contracts. That's a good core but very low on numbers.

That's about what I'd expect numbers-wise for mid Jan. Will be all next season's new signings (except Marshall) to be announced and no doubt several re-signings (hopefully including Palf if his is up). We got most of our important re-signings tied up before Christmas.

Just get us some big ball carriers please. We need to start playing on the front foot to give our 10, whoever that will be, the chance to get us playing.

It would be useful to get Narraway, Jebba, Lloyd (and maybe even Noakes) - to name a few - tied down for at least a season or two longer as they might come in handy should injuries call. Have them as our backups rather than the hopeless lot who played the majority of the 80 mins against Grenoble. Harsh but true, some of those guys showed they're not up to it.

Now that's strength in depth, and good competition as well.

Unfortunately, we lost a most of a generation to Bath. A couple went to Tiggs as you know & a few to other places.

At the same time, our management all but stopped the academy for short sighted financial reasons so very little new blood came through. This has now been rectified but, of course, will take time. But we have a few really good prospects already so we think that it's back on track.

To answer your actual Q, last season, you wouldn't have had to take your mittens off to count under 23 academy produced players.

So presumably Greig Tonks to be added to this.

Current rumours of Sebastian de Chaves and Andy Symons, but we still look incredibly light in the front row, lock and back three. I also suspect that Nic Rouse needs to removed from this list as I think age and injury may have caught up with him.

How long was cruse signed for? If I was on the board, I'd sign Steele for a long term deal and put him or Allison out on loan near season to offset the cost, such a shame to lose him when he's developed his game so much

Now confirmed to Wasps next year. Shame as I think he is a decent player, just unlucky to be third choice in the one position where we haven't had massive injury issues.

It's very impressive how many players have signed on considering our situation. maybe they're very confident that they'll survive this season. Thrilled about Steele, Lloyd I'm not too fussed, quite lightweight, and as we're a team who don't compete at line-out time, he doesn't get utilised

Steele and Lloyd back on board. Brilliant news for both. Steele especially. I wasn't a great fan of McKibbins form before his injury, but I'm sure he will pick up. I really think Steele can be something special given the right management. Lloyd has been impressive since he came in, he puts in a lot of carries for a second row lacking a stone or two by modern standards

Re: Squad 2016/17
SirBurger (IP Logged)

Really happy with those two announcements. Steele is, for me, our best 9, despite McKibbin's early season form. He just looks snappier and more of a running threat. The best thing is, due to his age, that he will only get better. Lloyd punches far above his weight and also will be much better next season after a summer in the gym. We are also severely lacking in numbers in the second row, so any news is good news as far as I am concerned!

Palfs' injury is one of the most disappointing aspects of this season. Was looking extremely promising at the end if last season. If he had been fit, I wonder whether they would have been tempted to play Franks at LH. Franks/Paice/Palf would have been a very handy front row imo.

If his prognosis is in any way positive I hope they would take the chance on him.

I feel that our backs line is pretty much complete for next season depending on whether the likes of Lewington and maitland leave. However our forwards is a big issue. Need another hooker, at least 2 more props, 2 more locks, and a big carrying back row. Not too much to ask for, eh?

Should be an interesting month or two. I guess Coman is a bit if an unknown, given he was announced fairly early. Would assume he'd still show up if TC was still around though. Of the big players not on the list, M Symons probably has the biggest chance of staying, but we'll see.

Whatever happens, I hope most leavers are confirmed pretty quickly and that there aren't too many question marks hanging over players as pre season approaches.

I think with Andy arriving from Warriors it means that Matt is staying on, TBH he is the one player I really want to stay as he has been quality every game he has played.

I think we will know over the next 2 or 3 weeks who is jumping ship, I think we are looking at loosing 10 or so, it's a real shame but if they don't want to stay then good luck to then.

I have taken it for granted that the academy lads like Smallbone, Williams, TBC would be staying and hope that I'm right in doing so.

I doubt he will unfortunately. He is a good player after all, as we know how good he can be 'on his day', so other clubs might be interested.

He also hasn't been treated particularly well this season it seems. Whenever he's played he hasn't been awful - certainly a cut above Noakes. A player as good as Shane should be playing more regularly.

And so is Narraway, by word of mouth in an interview.

This is all really promising news. Keep as much of the squad together as possible - and if Marshall and Bell especially are still coming then that is incredible. It would be incredible seeing James Marshall in the Championship - from playing in a team littered with All Blacks (even more so last season) to playing an away game in Rotherham...

I'm not complaining, but surely not...?!

Tiks staying will be a major benefit next season.... just hope he can stay off the injury couch.

What about our pack? Even the media reckon they've been pretty decent and not outclassed this year..Can we keep the core????.. IMO Jeb might be key here. Fingers and legs firmly crossed..

Presumably the relegation escape clause in the players's contracts have a time limit. i.e. they can't decide to leave some time next season. It would be interesting to know what that time limit is then we will know who is staying.

There is always the Goode clause, be unfit to play again & retire then have the biggest comeback since Lazarus at another club.

That's a thought. Can Lazarus play 10, and does he come in green with long sleeves?

We've known it for a while now but confirmation (more or less) that Fenners is off. Not sure where to but Llanelli Scarlets is the only club I've seen mentioned...

Is that confirmation? That's the player sponsor evening - the sponsors might be stopping... It is a big hint but it's not official yet.

Not a lot of cover in the 2nd row especially if Matt does go

So if we start with that squad even with Alex and Theo out its a pretty good outfit! I guess a few more could go but there are some good players with good depth in more than just a few positions

A few more?
Who?
Not sure we have had indication of others.
Like the look of the squad. Looking forward to the season already.

One area we look a bit thin is on the wing, with the injuries and departures. I hope we bring in at least another option there, even if it seems like Fowlie will be used there more often and Cokanasiga is a great prospect.

Has Cowan confirmed he's staying on then? Must have missed that.

Looking a bit light in the back 3, any supposed incoming or maybe Tonks at 15 with Marshall confirming he's still coming at 10?

Bit of a strange choice Marshall at 10. he's been playing 15 all season for the Canes. Tonks at 10 and Marshall at 15 for me.

I'd rather be a Paddy than a Quin!!

Currently sponsoring Greig Tonks for season 16/17.

there were, from what I understand, quotes attributed to him saying he would be off if the club was relegated. Not sure of the truth, but assuming those were correct perhaps the market wasn't what he anticipated...

To be fair, I think the quotes were more along the line that he would have to consider his options if we went down as he still had international ambitions, rather than he'd definitely be off.

I guess he either feels he's slipped too far down the Scottish pecking order, has decided to stick it out anyway , or didn't get a decent offer. I'm not too bothered what it was really, as having him involved is an unexpected bonus. Always gives 100% on the pitch.

Totally agree... we all get a bit interested in speculating on these things, but ultimately we still have a player with a great work rate who should be a beast in this league!

Even with Ransom we look light in the back three especially wings. FUll back is pretty well covered but we don't have a lot of wingers. Move Fowlie maybe?
