Good to see Teofilo on the bench too.

Any feedback on how Lovejoy & Austin got on last week?

Quins side;

15. Tim Swiel
14. Cadan Murley
13. Winston Stanley
12. Harry Sloan
11. Tim Visser
10. James Lang
9. Charlie Mulchrone (c)

1. Mark Lambert
2. Elia Elia
3. Phil Swainston
4. John Okafor
5. Stan South
6. Willie Ryan (Guest)
7. Archie White
8. Dino Lamb

16. Charlie Piper
17. Cameron Holenstein
18. Josh Ibuanokpe
19. Nathan Thomas (Guest)
20. James Gulliver (Guest)
21. Calum Waters
22. Dave Lewis
23. Tom James (Guest)

Could be a tough game against that Quins side. But vital game time for new and returning players. Good to see Nalaga & Williams ready to start games and for the younger guys like Josh Basham getting involved with the senior players.

Just to temper expectations, Irish have won just 1 of their last 21 A-League games over the past 6 years, and that was against London Welsh.

It's a low bar given our history in the competition, but that's the strongest team I can remember.

Nice to see lots of players back from injury

If Nalaga and Williams (J) make it through without injury do you think we'll see one or both on the bench on Friday? I'm thinking Nalaga could make the bench with Williams given a bit more time to get match sharp.

Would like to see them subbed at half time and if no reaction tomorrow they should be in the starting 15 or on the bench. It will bee interesting to see how Tom Fowlie plays tonight.

Come on you Irish

Paul

Nalaga on the bench for Friday would be great, bring him on with 20 mins to go to cause havoc on a tiring defence. We need that impact and directness for the latter stages of games.

Will be a very god test for them against a strong looking quins team. So pleased to see Tom smallbone back after his long injury and great to have Johnny back again. If Johnny comes through this game unscathed I'd be tempted to start him on Friday as I think centre is seriously weak without him or mulchrone

Great to see such a strong academy presence in the team.

After J Williams has had such a long time out, he will probably need match fitness. I wouldn't like to see him withdrawn from this game just to be put on the bench in the prem. give him a couple of A games to get the match sharpness back.

Nalaga didn't get much ball this evening, but when he did, he really looked dangerous! Hope he makes the bench for Friday.

Mmmm, didn't do a lot last night, and PANS was telling me at the weekend that he was disappointed with him in the Gloucester game.

He got plenty of ball against Glaws but didn't seem to be able to make much headway against their defence. He's definitely very mobile but is he a bit on the small size to be an effective Prem level back rower?

Crikey, conceding an average of 40 pts a match! We must lack in depth, or was there no A league participation last year?

Not sure what the point is entering a team into the A League, all we seem to do is get walloped every week.

I remember playing Saracens away, Tagi, Geraghty etc, 10 to get in, 0-64 scoreline.

I believe we have to, and failing to field a team results in some sort of punishment, a fine maybe.

It's a good way to ease players back to fitness - they don't have to worry about tiring themselves out by running tries in from all over the park, they can play in short sharp bursts with frequent breaks underneath our own posts

I'm pro the A League. It's just a shame we aren't performing and I suspect it's probably as we didn't play in it last season and had no equivalent.

Hopefully as the season develops we'll improve. It's their full time jobs for a start!!!!

I think it's worthwhile too, despite the losing streak. Gives squad and academy players an opportunity to impress, whilst also acting as a pathway for players returning from injury. Good for the academy players to spend time in combinations they may end up playing in at senior level, rather than being scattered to all corners of ND1/2 imo. Would help massively if we could find a way to be a little more competitive though.

It only becomes pointless when the ratio of guest to LI players gets too high for whatever reason.

Re: A League team tonight

I'm pro the a league, but a result like that when 1st team players are playing is not good enough. If we want to stay up we need the winning mentality through the club and including A league games we've now lost three on the trot.

I'm confident of a result this weekend at sale but we need results across the board.

I guess the most important thing is that players get match fitness and so are able to slot into the first team if there's an injury. Hoping smallbone, max and Johnny all came through well after not playing for so long.
Regarding lasha, he seemed great in pre season to me and has certainly impressed for georgia. Hopefully he's just getting settled and can start to impress soon

That team had a strong academy presence which is great but nearly all from the same side (U/18 just over a year ago). In very little time they've gone from schoolboy level to men's prem level. These guys didn't even get much championship game time. It's a huge rugby lesson but they are learning it together against the right kind of opposition. There were three guys back from long term injury who were no doubt very rusty.

Other players may be long term prospects. The likes of Lovejoy may never see a first team squad this season but with props, he's a young guy who must have potential for future years.

The A league allows them to play together and learn at a level that isn't too far off the standards required of them. They may lose all their games this season but next season if they'll still be in the A League they'll run a lot of teams far closer as they grow in confidence and bulk. They are not a bad back up team, they're just about as new as can get at this level.

All valid points, but Quin's had 6 academy players in the starting line up plus 4 more on the bench. In addition to the 10 of those, they had 4 guests (1 in the starting line up). So a group of young lads, plus some probably coming back from injury much like ourselves.

I don't know what to make of it all really, I just know that while it would be nice to get some results from the games, I'm not too worried. Some of the lads played in the B&I cup and delivered. they're not bad players but they're not a unit yet. We have a first team squad then we have the academy, there's a huge drop in between those. Other clubs have filtered players through over the past three years, we've had to build again to find the U18 winners over a year ago. Very few were developed before them. I'd rather see them play in the European games and LV cup. Nice problems to have this year

I think that if you did a bit of checking, teh majority of the Quins players have prem experience and a chunk were bench players in the weekends Prem game - our A team is basically those that are not in the match day 23 plus slotted in academy boys. Considering it was shite weather and a team that does not play together much you need to cut them some intial slack I think

There are several top notch academies in the Premiership, of which ours is one. The first class facilities at Hazelwood (I think these were briefly mentioned at the Members' Day) play a part in this, as does the great coaching team and the training regime.
The A League is an integral part of the players' development and provides essential experience. Coupled with the great opportunity for players returning from injury to ease themselves back into the game (although I doubt any of them would actually call the A League "easy"), it adds depth to the club and compliments the rest of the training programme.
I'd much rather see our own talent develop and learn from losing the occasional (or every) match, than rely on guest players to squeeze out a win for its own sake.
As someone wise never said: "To learn how to win, first you must learn how to lose"

There is talk of expanding the A league into a full-blown championship, one proposal was I think to play matches on the same day as 1st team Prem fixtures. I think that was somewhat rubbished however there seems to be at least "some" interest. The French seem to be able to make their 2ndXV competitions work and attract decent crowds apparently.

I'm probably wrong but do the French mainly play in state owned facilities and therefore a be able to afford, bigger squads to treat the A league as a separate competition

Wind your neck in pal, its a fair discussion on why we're not performing very well in the A league games. No one is attacking the side, so there's no need for you to get all defensive of them.

I'll address a couple of points you raised, as you've gotten all shirty.
A chunk of players were on the bench for quins this weekend. That would be two players (from my rather quick look), both played for a staggering 5 minutes.

The weather was the same for both teams.

Exeter had an A match after ours last Saturday, which I thought was a great idea, particularly if you own your ground.

There were 8.5k people there, even if you hung onto 1000, for the A match, buying beer and food etc, you'd certainly be doing better than a Monday night and the support/atmosphere would be better.

I'd have stayed if I was an Exeter fan, despite the weather!

I stayed for the Gloucester ex-pros vs the Shedweb supporters a couple of years ago after our end of season away game down there a couple of years ago. Tindall, Balshaw, Fanolua and co absolutely running riot. Would love it if the Irish did something similar
