Saints sack Director of Rugby Jim Mallinder.

Re: Mallinder
CharlieG 12 December, 2017 11:05
HC,

Are you suggesting that he could be the answer to our coaching woes?

He does have a lot of experience, and has taken Saints through 'thick and thin', including relegation and promotion back to the AP.

Yes please...

The new CEO from Saints and Jim as head coach working together is surely a match made in heaven.

Where would we fit him in, you know, like we couldn't fit Quads Cooper.

Fits the bill

Been there, done that. Probably hungry to prove he can do it.

Might get his son and a few others from there as well

I think LI should approach him for the DoR role. Not convinced that NK will be able to turn our fortunes around. Change needs to happen soon and Malinder has the right level of experience. If not, we are fast heading for the championship. Look at the number of players he has taken from ordinary to international class.

Come on you Irish

Get him in ASAP - we've already hit panic mode and if we lose to Worcester in two weeks time that's us done for and another waste of time season awaits.

He would at least give us a fighting chance.

Re: Mallinder
tonyh50 12 December, 2017 12:48
Definitely take him on as DoR and ‘mentor’ to Nick we needed someone who can make hard headed decisions and has the nous to devise effective strategies against differing opponents rather than try and stick to a stagnant approach that does not seem to change week after week.
Also I suspect having him at the helm would be more attractive to potential recruits than our current ‘novices’ and under successful team.

Re: Mallinder
GHA 12 December, 2017 13:07
Perhaps now's not the time for a mentoring experiment, and wasn't Venter supposed to be doing that to some degree anyway?

Mallinder please

Strewth you’d give your right arm for that level of experience and achievement.

Wonder who Saints have in mind?

I've heard that Tom Wood has reluctantly offered to take on the role of Head Coach himself.
"We'll cross that bridge if we come to it. If I was asked to do it for the benefit of the team, I'd consider it very carefully and probably front up."

Re: Mallinder
dooj106 12 December, 2017 13:14
Agreed, I think it would be beneficial having someone like Mallinder, as long as it is not at the expense of Nick or the other coaches. Long term I think they will do well, but am not sure that will help us this season so having someone like Jim is definitely worth a go.

If I was Mick Crossan I'd have the limo heading to Frankins Gardens right now to pick him up. Perhaps sign him up as a consultant to the end of the season at least. We need to do somthing to change our fortunes. It is not currently working.

If we get shot of Venter I'd be happy for us to then bring in Mallinder.

Well why not? Can you give any example where Venter is adding value to the club? I can't work out if the game has moved on so much from when he had his greatest success that he's no longer relevant or if he's just spread to thinly. Whichever of those it is he's clearly not helping us, Italy or the Springboks, none of those teams are showing any sort of success.

If he's not bringing anything to the table, then he ought to be replaced, Mallinder may well fit the bill to help bring Kennedy on and also take a little of the pressure off of him.

Re: Mallinder
Shawshank 12 December, 2017 16:45
Can't see how Kendo and Mallinder could work together - Jim ain't going to agree to become Head Coach reporting to Kendo.

And Kendo isn't remotely Head Coach material who could report to DoR Mallinder.

So if Jim joins us, Kendo would surely be on the way out.

If not Jim then I would try to get someone like Lee Blackett at Wasps to join us, to work as Head Coach under Kendo.

Re: Mallinder
Griff 12 December, 2017 16:54
I'd have thought if we did bring him in it'd be as an advisor/overview of Nick's work (assuming we're trying to keep Kendo long-term). He might go for that to cover his bills from the rest of the season - with no option to stay-on after that. I'd guess Nick's thoughts would be key here - he'd have to want someone to help. If he was keen I could see it working but I don't know JM and how he'd get on with that relationship.

I do agree with the majority that something needs to happen, though.

There is a rumour on the Worcs board that Geordan Murphy has applied for the Coach job at Cardiff....

Re: Mallinder
jimbo800 12 December, 2017 18:07
I heard Murphy was approached by the blues. I’d try and get Jim in until the end of the season on a consultancy basis. Problem is, I assume he’ll take the rest of the season off and job hunt next season. Wuss are looking for a coach aren’t they?

Straight replacement for BV (but an effective one)

Go for it, he's got experience, will be desperate to prove Saints wrong and he's a good guy. He will surely be capable of changing things - sadly something the current coaching team seem incapable of.
If that fails, I'd have Ford or Lancaster in a heartbeat.

Would look outstanding on a CV, taking on nailed-on relegation fodder midway through season and turning it around to rescue it. You’d need a hell of a lot of nerve to take that on....

Re: Mallinder
jimbo800 13 December, 2017 08:49
Lancaster isn’t available, he’s with Leinster. I think he’s just signed a new contract. Using Leinster as an example, they had a young coaching set up like us and results weren’t going their way. They brought in Lancaster to work with Cullen and look at them now. It can work if the people involved allow/want it to work.

Couldn’t agree more! Lancaster was always an excellent coach that ended up in the wrong job. Leinster saw the potential and wow, has it paid off. Shrewd business by Leinster and Lancaster loves it, hence the renewal!

Perhaps Mallinder might fancy some of the same in the short term!

Massive test of mettle, massive statement of guts to take it on, and he can do it.
