And quite right too, you tell em Mick.

Yes, I understand we don't have our own stadium and are currently operating in an unsustainable business model.

But the club apparently has "big plans for the future" and other clubs should respect that.

It's a smarmy, self-indulgent, prattish way of getting rid of the runt of the litter, reminiscent of the way Western Force were axed from Super Rugby. London Irish has and will give a huge contribution to the Premiership (not least giving these elite clubs continually easy wins...)

Summary of article: ick says there is support for a 14 team league: but the article seems to suggest there's also pressure to cap it at 12. Apparently a 14 team structure would cost each club around £1 mio (unless TV deals are improved then probably no change until 2021 when current deal ends ) and require a 50 man squad rather than the current 40. The article also claims LI are losing about £2.5 mio annually and mentions the rejected £3.5 mio Cussack-backed offer. Mick standing his ground re P shares vowing not to sell but still needs around £10 mio capital injection. P share valuation of c£9.7 mio comes from Worcester's "For Sale" documentation. (IMO £10 mio is a serious undervaluation...at least for any club prepared to sell up).

So Mick / LI should sell LI's share in the Premiership in return for c.£10 million / 30 pieces of silver and shut itself out of the Premiership cartel permanently, leaving the 'haves' to continue to have and the 'have nots' (including LI) on the outside.

Yeah, right. That sounds excellent for the future of the club. Go right ahead.

Not.

Surely the point here is that no club is viable working within the current framework. Hence why those that survive have massive financial backing from an investor/s with passion for the game who are accepting that there is only financial loss at the end of the day.

So measuring viability (that is sustainable and not reliant on the bank of goodwill) is (IMHO) dubious at best.

Newcastle haven’t paid player bonuses, HMRC payment was late twice and the matavesi transfer fee was 70k short until litigation was threatened. Worcester are openly looking fot investment, just two examples of clubs in a similar position to us.

So if it’s ringfenced to 12, it could easily be down to 10 within 2 years. Given England has the biggest player base by some distance and the wealthiest union, how has the premium of the game got into such a mess?

Surely a ring-fenced league, regardless of if it is 14, would require smaller squads than now as teams would trust youngsters.

The best plan I’ve heard for ringfencing is to copy the Pro14. Have 16 teams in two conferences, play your conference H&A, and the other HorA. Then you’re at the magical 22 regular season games. Yorkshire, Ealing and Bedford/Nottingham/Donny would probably be the additional teams.

I guess it all comes down to is the premiership inclusive or exclusive, my thinking is they are trying to build a ring fence of clubs with money or the clubs with money are now running the competition. They did do away with prayoffs after we were premoted im pretty certain they will ring fence it when or if we are relegated

It's quite complicated.

This article - [www.bbc.co.uk] - has some info.

Did we not buy lots more P shares when Richmond and London Scottish went bust and fell out of the league? Is that not why we were London Irish Scottish Richmond? With their logo on our jersey for years? Surely we would have more shares than Bristol and lots of others then. How could we be excluded from a league that we are major shareholders in?

If you read that BBC article which CharlieG posted the link to, it says: 'The P shares... were issued to the 13 established top-flight clubs in 2005'. So long after Richmond and Scottish were forced out.
