Apparently from next season Bristol will officially become the Bristol Bears! Better than Shoguns I guess?

Cue the comic words relating to Bristol's performances next season.

Perhaps, " They're only here for the honey" about underperforming players; HIAs being announced as "..leaving the field like a bear with a sore head"; "The team's gone into hibernation" over the season's winter months; scramble defences described as "like bees round the honeypot" and many others no doubt.

Add your own.

God of all the things to call yourself. I bet a child came up with it.

Bear with me while I lol. At some point Bristol supporters will find these puns unbearable.

I'd rather be a Paddy then a Quin!!

C'mon the boys in Green!!

God that is a joke of a name. It just seems to have no connection to anything and conjures up a cuddly image. There aren't bears in the UK are there?

So Leicester Tigers is fine but not Bristol Bears.

I would have thought we had something more important to worry about.

Well, one has over 130 years of history behind it, and one was dreamed up by a marketing guru with a degree in alliteration.

Here's one for you:

A few years ago I was at Whipsnade Zoo. They have a really old-school deep bear enclosure - tall walls you can walk on surrounding the mostly wooded enclosure. While we were watching one of the ursine inmates came out of the trees into the clear area next to the wall and unceremoniously defecated, looked at us (with what I like to think of as a grin) and then wondered back into cover.

I turned to my companion and said "That answers that one then."

Why? It dates back to 1885 so it's not some poxy marketing gimmick.

Changing the name and the logo without taking into account the supporters has rubbed them the wrong way to say the least.

Well Mark W-J what about Chiefs, Sharks and Falcons?

Its just a name.

I don't have a problem with Tigers and Saints because there is a lot of history. The names weren't dreamed up in the professional era, they've been used for well over 100 years.

Chiefs has some history behind it, but it's still been contrived to generate an identity that has nothing to do with the original use of the term.

Sharks and Falcons are gimmicks, albeit they seem have been adopted to the point where nobody bats an eyelid. But it's something that was en vogue in the early noughties, when people were still trying to come to terms with professionalism and how to 'market' their 'brand'. In that respect, what Bristol are doing feels slightly out of step with the times - a gimmick from 15 years ago.

What about the Warriors, or even Wasps?

They might feel gimmicky now but in 100 years will have a lot of history behind it. Bears isn't half as gimmicky or branded as 'Shoguns' either

There's always a vocal crowd when it comes to re-branding. No matter who changes what to what.

Think back to all the moaning about our badge a few years ago. Now no one cares. Wuss fans hated the Warriors label at first and have now accepted it.

If your work has ever re-branded, think back to all the water coooler comments. Now see who cares!

Talk about a ready made fanbase :-) Expect the Bristol Bears team to be wearing very tight, muscle cut, tops and extra tight shorts next season.

The real Bristol Bears
