Pleased to see we haven’t needed to rush myler back. Second half game management was poor last week, hopefully there’s a better plan this time around.

Sounds like a similar theme - LI lose the plot a bit in the 2nd half - or do the refs suddenly go mad with their cards?

Ref went card happy towards the end. All seemed fair but not sure how there wasn't a penalty at least if not a card for McLean being taken in the air by two separate pirates players straight after the penalty try (cue booing). He also missed a sequence of knock ons, forward passes and offside players playing the ball.

We need to stop switching off in games as it's cost us on a number of occasions now. Myler should start next week.

Far too much kicking of good possession away.

When we were down to 13 esp. it was suicicdal rugby to keep giving them back the ball.

Mr Tempest was very poor. Missed a bunch of offsides and high tackles by the Pirates.

Sounds a bit like the Bedford match where we picked up a load of cards (including a red which was subsequently rescinded) whilst they got away with multiple high tackles - are the refs being more harsh on us or are they missing a load of stuff we do too?

A good result, even if there were a few heart stopping moments. But I thought the referee, Ian Tempest, had a shocker. Bearing in mind he is meant to be an experienced premiership ref he seemed to miss a lot of forward passes, offsides and tackles in the air and towards the end seems to have lost all control of the game. It was interesting to note that Bryce Campbell was off the field for 17 minutes for his yellow card and Blair was off for 16. I know that there was an injury stoppage during that time, but not 7 minutes! In fact neither of them was allowed back on at the expiry of their cards even when the game was stopped for a Pirates penalty (was that because the Pirates 9 took a quick tap...?). As for Irish's play, there was far too much aimless kicking with no coordinated chasing - it was such a relief to see Stevie Myler return and take the game by the scruff of the neck and see us out.

In the first half, the referee was assisted by a very competent touch, sadly this was not repeated in the second, touch unable to keep up with much of the play. Agree too much kicking possession away, but hopefully this was the game plan as opposed to being aimless. For me the two yellow cards contributed to an awesome defence from the 13 and an amazing crowd atmosphere.

It was a result but no more. A shambles of a team who look as if they have never met, let alone trained together.

Christ what were you expecting from a backline thrown together like that. Not perfect no but we got the 5 points and showed a lot of heart out there today.

Gosh - I must have been watching a different team/game. The London Irish team I watched had an excellent scrum, really strong lineout, fantastic maul (and maul defence) even when down to 13 and showed huge commitment in defence to see the game out. Pirates are not muppets and the boys did really well to secure the result.

You must come and see the team I was watching sometime - great value and a great response from the crowd to get behind them when it really mattered!!!

It seemed that we were kicking long with the aim of encouraging the Pirates to kick to touch so that we could have a line out, and therefore another opportunity to maul them to death. You could see that the chasers were deliberately hanging back to ensure line cohesion - thus discouraging the Pirates from running it back. If that’s going to be the strategy though then our tackling out wide needs to be better.

Worrying lack of progress with the attack in general though. We know our forwards could compete in the GP, but our backs need to offer more than shipping to a forward standing in midfield or one-our runners. Whose our backs-coach again?

I didn't go to the game but listened to it on BBC Radio Cornwall.

A very nice tribute to Topsy Ojo by their press officer before the game who was assisting a Graham McKechnie sound-alike in commentary.

As for the game, it sounded like LI did what they had to do by using what they were very good at, that being, using their forwards to dominate all aspects of forward play.

It did get a bit repetative after the first yellow card, penalty try and then the second yellow with the commentator constantly wishful thinking about them getting, 1st a bonus try point, and then a win.

I agree with Blarney's comments that the chasers seemed to be deliberately holding back when we kicked, but it was disappointing to see that we didn't seem to be able to vary this approach when it was apparent that Pirates weren't inclined to kick it into touch. Like others, I'm delighted with the forwards' muscle but I'm also concerned with the development of our running game out wide. OHC acquitted himself very well on his debut showing good strength in the tackle but was given the ball so rarely that it was hard for him to use his undoubted speed.

An opposition quote from pirates board.

“Agree with Mullion that we did miss a big opportunity having dragged ourselves back to within one score. Probably just lacked a bit of composure when Irish went down to 13, although we did eventually use the space and scored a good try. We conceded a pretty soft try early in the second half with a couple of missed tackles, but apart from that we were the better side from half time onwards. The set piece was good, apart from the first scrum which went backwards at a worrying rate - but we sorted it after that. The line out, too was pretty good except we messed up two on our own throw five metres from the Irish line. Frustratingly we had another chance, caught the ball successfully, then got pinged for obstruction. In contrast Irish were very clinical in that area and scored four tries from catch and drives.
Have to say Irish are a pretty boring team, just playing to their strength in the pack and playing a low risk game plan based on kicking and then trying to pressurise the opposition. Effective but tedious.
In contrast Pirates played some exciting running rugby, only spoiled by a few careless handling errors at crucial times. Stunning try by Wedlake, and Kyle was brilliant at full back - rock solid under the high ball and dangerous whenever he joined the line.
We can definitely beat them when they come to The Mennaye”.

Lincs - there was a very long passage of play when we were running the clock down in their half, and both YC’s were by then at least 2 mins overdue.

Ref then gave Pirates a penalty, but before Blair and Bryce could come on Pirates cleverly took a quick tap, and then about 2 mins later scored a try.

So we were in reality down to 13 for about 13-14 mins of game-time.

Agree with the cornish supporters view that we were dull but with a 9 playing ten and a somewhat makeshift backline it was never going to be a good day for the backs.

Have to somewhat disagree that they think cornish dragged themselves back into the match and were on a par with us. Pirates had NOTHING. They scored two tries as a result of two missed tackles, albiet well taken. Their other two came off the back of us being down players for some frankly very poor officiating. we went down to 13 men and they couldn't break through us, so for them to think they were so much more exciting maybe its just two sides of a coin.

No problem with the yellow cards they were probably warranted. Bryce's, both players were falling, but letter of the law fair enough. Blair just a bit stupid really. However numerous high tackles by pirates went unpunished, mclean very blatantly taken out in the air and i counted at least twice when they dragged our maul down close to the line which all went unpunished. You have to be consistent and for me Sir on Saturday was anything but and it left us at a massive disadvantage for nearly 14 mins of play. Still cornish couldn't offer much in that period and we deservedly won.

What about the non-card to LI early on in the game for killing quick Pirates' ball, pretty much on the try line?

Not saying Ian Tempest got everything right, but he was 1-1 on the non-cards if you assume that the tackle in the air was also a card.

Pirates I thought had 2 very decent players; Tom Cowan-Dickie (assuming brother of Luke?) and the 11. Both could be worthwhile if a Prem club was to take a chance on them.

well exactly the consistency was really poor throughout. Also the not letting advantage play out, although we did subsequently kick to the corner and score so maybe that helped us.

Agree with the cornish wingers. Westlake was it who scored their first try? looked a very capable player and could easily make the step up.

He is also top scorer of tries in the league with 9 I believe. Liked the look of him. I’m hoping K & K are keeping tabs on the Championship for signings. As we have found out with Rogerson, the Championship have many gems.
